Safety
When I tell friends that I was very succesfully brainwashed in the States, I get quite a few raised eyebrows, until I make it clear that is was so with the concept of "safety first".
The way I say it, if safety comes first, fun is assured.
But if we put fun first, then eventually something wrong will happen, and fun will be lost, maybe permanently.
I also tell about the split second that my helmet paid for years of discomfort in carrying it, but that's a long story that needs not be told here.

Managerial Attitude
Experience and observation have taught me many lessons in managing people, especially reflecting on when and where I and others have been most effective, harder workers with enthusiasm and a smile.
I put into words some of these concepts after my Camp Wewa 1994 experience, where I saw how succesful they were. As a manager I use them daily, and certainly hope my supervisors have some version of them to use also.

  • conviction
Employees convinced of what they are doing are the most effective, for nothing is stronger in action as a determined conviction of their goals.
  • 1rst practical duty of a manager: keep worker happy
If your workers are happy, they will work in such a way that the client will be happy. And a happy client is a client that comes back for more.
  • "keep your cup full"
Something else that I learnt there is the need not to overextend my reach or work until I fall exhausted. I know I do get enthusiastic, sometimes too much, but I've learnt that to keep effective, especially for long-range goals, I have to step my efforts somewhat.
  • clear goals
The very concept of a ‘mission statement', list of objectives, or such aids to management are almost unknown in Uruguay or Bolivia. Nevertheless I'm glad I know about them, and now consider them a necessary basis for any project I take part in.
Organizing processes
In routinary situations I am routinary, which is as much as can be expected in such cases.  In this sense there even have been complaints that I follow too much the set rules.
Yet when the need arises for organizing unusual efforts, I am known for being able to get extraordinary results out of normal people and resources.
Especially good at apportioning work and tasks in complex projects with no precedents

Conservation
I am most definitelly commited to conservationist use of natural resources.
