Racing Classifications

TCRA bases its classes on USCA guidelines which are used throughout the U.S.. Separate classes for men, women, masters (over 40 years of age), youth and mixed teams may be offered. The following table identifies boat classes without respect to gender or age:

Other Canoe, Sea Kayak and Whitewater Kayak Racing Classes

Standard -max length 18', width = length x 15%. Not a TCRA Class. These are Texas Water Safari rules and other races have a similar class. Single paddles only.

Recreational - Most ABS, Aluminum and non-racing fiberglass canoes.

Canoe Triathalon - (Canoe/Run/Bike) This is the original form of triathalon which began in 1973 with Eppie's Great Race in California and was subsequently followed by the even greater Martindale Triathalon here in Texas as well as other canoe triathalons throughout the country.

Pro Boat - a 3 x 27 C-2 race popular in Canada, Michigan, New York and elsewhere. Offers cash prizes. Major races include the Ausable Canoe Marathon, General Clinton 70 Miler and La Classique.

Stage Races - Multi day races (with overnight stopovers) such as the Finlandia Clean Water Challenge and the Adirondack Canoe Classic.

Outrigger - 6 person outrigger canoes raced in open ocean. Popular in Hawaii and west coast.

United States Canoe and Kayak Team (USCKT)/International Canoe Federation (ICF) Sprint Racing - High\ Kneel C-1, C-2 and C-4 (Men) and K-1, K-2, and K-4 (Men and Women) sprint races usually held on a 200m, 500m or 1000m laned course. This is a recognized Olympic sport.

American Canoe Association (ACA)/ICF Marathon - Same classes as ICF Spri\ nt but held on longer courses. Roger Meyer is the defending national K-1 champion of this bizarre and lonely sport.

Surfski - A sit on top kayak for open water racing. Gaining popularity especially on the west coast, Hawaii and Caribbean.

Dragon and SwanBoats - 20+ paddlers in a 45,000 lb. boat sprinting like Hell with prehistoric paddles. No "huts" allowed.

ACA/slalom - C-1, C-2, K-1 and open boat competition run through both upstream and downstream gates in whitewater. A recognized Olympic sport.

ACA/Wildwater - Canoe and downriver kayak races held in whitewater.

Pirogue - A Louisiana canoe.

Canoe poling and canoe sailing - Canoe sailing was once a part of the Safari. Some years a version of poling is necessary.
