SOUTHWEST CANOE RENDEZVOUS

On October 7th through 10th, at Huntsville State Park, the Texas Canoe Racers and all other canoe clubs across the state assemble to assist the Houston Canoe Club with the largest canoe trade show in Texas. The event consists of canoe manufacturers displaying their boats with demos available to paddle. There are many exhibits and seminars that are free to the public as well as admission to the show.

On Saturday morning, the TCRA presents a one hour seminar on the Water Safari along with discussion on racing in general. Bring your rigged Safari boat to help with the class. That afternoon the TCRA hosts the Club Challenge race where participants race for points to determine which canoe club gets the traveling trophy. TCRA members are encouraged to paddle as ringers for the club of their choice. The race lasts about 10 minutes but volunteers are needed to assist with registration and race officiating.

There will be free camping for TCRA members Thursday thru Sunday at screened shelter #27. The weekend is structured to allow large amounts of time to enjoy the show, paddle, set around a campfire and enjoy good friendship in a family atmosphere.

Camping and admission to the Rendezvous is free with the exception of the park's entrance fee. Tell the registration desk you are with the TCRA at shelter #27. The campsite will accommodate up to 10 families so reserve your spot today by contacting Kevin Bradley at 830-424-3769 or e-mail bradleyk@gvtc.com.

Palmetto State Park Needs Help

By Robert Youens

The October 17th flood severely damaged the bathrooms on river right, destroyed roads, wiped out signs, jammed up the low water crossing, and littered the trails with fallen trees and debris. The water was 16 feet deep at the Pavilion, but the building survived relatively unscathed.

On Sunday, February 28th, the TCRA and others are coming to the rescue. (Those individuals that would prefer to work on the park on Saturday rather than get out on the river, are more than welcome.)

I talked to park officials on Wednesday Feb. 3rd and they have outlined three areas that they feel are of highest need:

1. Palmetto Trail (.67 mile trail on river right) - The trail is covered with fallen trees and debris and two small bridges have been washed out. This trail will require several individuals with chainsaws and trimming gear. Some people good with a hammer and saw are need to rebuild the bridges, simple 6-8ft. spans with no handrails. The park will purchase supplies.

2. Hiking Trail (1.25 mile trail on river right) - This trail is not in as bad of shape, but many signs and trail markers have been pushed over and require righting. Some tree and debris clearing will be needed.

3. Low Water Crossing - The trail leading down to the crossing is in bad shape and will need some shovel and tractor work. The crossing has several trees lying across it that need to be cut out.

What we need: chainsaws, shovels, dirt rakes, post hole diggers, branch clippers, wood working tools, etc. Kevin Bradley is bringing a 4 wheeler and cart, and I am bringing a 4-wheel drive tractor with bucket loader.

Above all we need people, lots of them. Anyone interested in camping at my property adjacent to the park on Friday or Saturday night is welcome. The conditions at my place are primitive, but we can use the bathrooms at the park. The entrance to my property is the first gate on the left, past the bridge over the San Marcos River (on river right). Currently most of the park is closed, but park officials are going to make some free camping spaces available for people helping in the clean-up. Call for reservations and tell them you are with the clean-up.

Park officials are hoping to open the park in March, without our help this may not be possible. When you arrive for the cleanup, check in at park headquarters, they will ask that you sign a liability waver and state that you have a current tetanus vaccination. You will be directed to the work area.

If you can make it, please give me a call at (512) 837-9853 or email TXSNAPPER@AOL.com. If you have special construction talents or equipment, please let me know.

Thanks, see you there.
