![]() Introduction to Majora's Mask At the end of The Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time, Zelda finds Link at the palace just as it happened when they first met. However, Ganondorf is still around, considering that he had only been sealed in the Sacred Realm in the future. Zelda thusly lets Link go on his way much as she did when first a child. In addition, Navi returns to be the overseer of the Great Deku Tree's rule, after completing her so-called mission. Link returns to Lon Lon Ranch and becomes engaged to marry Malon, knowing that people were engaged as a youth in the Middle ages. As an engagement present, Talon gives Link his prized horse, Epona. Link returns to the security of his Kokiri home, now having undergone another great adventure. While Link has been on his mission during childhood, word has spread about a wondrous mask with frightful powers granting supreme reign to anyone who so claims it. Mido is in great want of this mask, fearing that Link may try to take rule of the Kokiri from Mido’s hands. Since Link is the only person in Kokiri with a horse, and knowing that Link had no knowledge of the mask’s powers, Mido entrusts Link to go to Hyrule Market to purchase the valuable mask. Link decides to go on the daylong trek, possibly having to stop at his fiancée’s house for a meal. Although Link is an avid traveler, he gets loses his way in the Lost Woods. Following a path he had never traveled before which was supposed to lead him to an exit at the Temple of Time, Link finds himself in a glade with mysterious trees of immense height. He tries to incite Epona to move, but she is unsure of her surroundings and stops. Since she is so nervous, the noise created by Tael and Tatl startles her so much that she rears up and throws Link off her back unconscious. After gaining consciousness, Link finds his captors playing with his most prized possession, but Tael alerts the Skull Kid. The imp darts upon Epona’s back and rides away. However, Link pursues the thief, caring about his greatest possession and his best friend. The fairy boy enters a tunnel of great darkness and finally comes upon the imp. He frightens the hero, and the Skull Kid leaves so fast that he leaves behind one of his own best friends, Tatl. Tatl vows to help Link until she finds the Skull Kid, then leaving to her previous master. Link takes the help, hoping it is better than the annoying Navi’s. Then, Link follows the path taken by the imp, but he falls into a dark abyss, finally landing on a Deku Flower. Link has passed into the parallel universe known as Termina, which is a Latin derivative meaning “end.” Many of the characteristics of this world are the same, including the characters, but not the names of those characters. Remarkably, the only person to retain their name is the last person you would expect—Dampé the Gravekeeper. Link finds the mask salesman, such an honest tradesman, in the quasi-sewer in which he ends up. After much talking, the mask seller, who has no other name, asks you to get your instrument so that he may help you. You receive your ocarina from the skull kid, but inexplicably you may not play it for the obvious fact that your snout is too big to do so. You learn the song of time and warp back to the beginning of the three-day cycle. The mask keeper is waiting for you, and you show him your ocarina, after which you learn the song of healing. Thus you change from a deku scrub to a human, and can change forever more with the mask strewn from your face. The next place to which your journey fares you entrance is the Southern Swamp.
