Films of SCAdian Interest
or What To Do If You Can't Read
Recently, I overheard someone mention something about watching movies as a way to get a feel for things medieval. For the sake of those who don't know where to start, here is a list of films that may appeal to someone in the SCA. I will try to include TV broadcasts if I think they are available on videotape (its sometimes amazing what you can find at a public library).
This is a big list, so it's on sevral pages, grouped thematically. The first one includes films I have grouped into the following categories:
- Medieval
- Joan of Arc
- Vikings
- Hunchback
Click on the genre to go to the appropriate page below:
- Musketeers
- Pirates
- Renaissance
- Fantasy
- Future & Sci-Fi
- Animated
- Modern
- Post-Renaissance
- Zorro
- Egyptian
- Greek
- Roman
- Other Ancient
- Hercules
- Maciste
- Jesus
- Goliath
- Samson
- Other Biblical
In parentheses I have put any alternate titles the movie may have, the country of origin (if not the US or Great Brittain), the date, the director, some of the cast, and sometimes the studio. Eventually I will be including capsulized descriptions, lengthy reviews and essays, and scanning some images.
If you wish to add to this project, please e-mail your addition (use the link at the bottom of the page).
HOW TO USE THE MARKINGS:
! = a definite must-see for anyone with SCA related interests.
+ = good to see if you've already seen or if you can't find the must-sees.
% = either a weak movie with a SCA-related theme, or a good movie of limited SCA-related interest.
- = only for the most desparate completist.
I have reviewed a number of these movies on Amazon.com and Allwatchers.com. You can go to those individual reviews by clicking on the AMZ for Amazon and the ALW for Allwatchers.
