1999 BRFL Old News

Scoring Hard to Come By in '99

In 1998, the BRFL was scoring points by the truckload. It was not unusual to tally 50 and lose. Three times teams tallied 60 and lost. The scoring frenzy peaked in week 14 when the BRFL scoring average was 49 points. The move back from 14 to 12 teams was to blame. Fewer teams, more points.

In 1993, the opposite happened. Scoring dropped dramatically. That was the year that the league went from 12 to 14 teams. It was also the year that the NFL gave two bye weeks to each team. As many as 8 teams were off in the meat of the season. Scoring dipped to 22 points in week 2, but ironically, a full NFL slate was played.

But how do you explain 1999? There are still 12 teams and and only three teams at the most are on a bye each week. It looked like a season of even higher scoring; yet, scoring is down a full six points per BRFL team.

Week199919981993
1 37.75 39.67 34.42
2 30.58 38.16 22.86
3 31.67 38.33 25.07
4 35.67 43.75 25.21
5 32.41 39.50 23.71
6 30.83 34.75 26.14
Ave 39.02 33.15 26.24
What other factors are killing scoring in 1999?
  • Injuries and retirements of key players: John Elway, Terrell Davis, Barry Sanders, Jamal Anderson, Fred Taylor, Vinny Testaverde, Steve Young and Garrison Hearst.
  • Top Teams having terrible years: The final four from last years: Broncos, Jets, Falcons and Vikings all with losing records.
  • More players playing below expectations: Mark Brunell, Terrel Owens, Ricky Williams, Cris Carter, Keyshawn Johnson, Curtis Martin. All highly drafted stars who are not producing.
  • Fewer Breakout stars: Kurt Warner, Stephen Davis, Marvin Harrison and Brad Johnson are playing above expectations. Where are the rest of the sleepers?
Scoring does usually pick up in the later stages of the BRFL season. This is when injuries take their toll defensively and offenses come together. This is before the top teams get conversative and rest their stars. Since the top teams are mostly hard to identify, perhaps the scoring will increase as teams are forced to remain competative later in the season.

Week 7 Claims

Calvin is lamenting the failure of the "right of first refusual on SRs" proposal. Last week he SR'ed Carolina QBs, they scored 25 points. However, come claim day, they are now the property of division rival Best.

Week 6 Power Rankings
and Claims

Week 5 write Up

Sometimes the standings don't tell the story as to how well a team might be doing. Here is a chart that reflects current relative strength of the BRFL teams.

1. Mosakowski-Hale They're baaaack. St Louis QB / Bruce most combo points in league history
2. Wallace After a TITANic start, Wallace, TEN QBs and E George have cooled.
3. Deitrich Hoping the Redskins are rested and ready to resume scoring.
4. Jones/Klingman On the rise: Collins and Alstott providing solid complement to Favre
5. Jackson Solid QB play with Flutie gives him slight edge over Best in division
6. Best Carter pukes after game.. A commentary on Best's chances?
7. Outlaw Taylor or Stewart...Taylor or Stewart. Always guessing wrong.
8. Stroupe Ricky Williams? Only bigger stiff is Wilt Chamberlain.
9. Czupryna CZ needs to share some of his Viagra with his team.
10. Peil Tie with Wally without big game from Vikes QBs may mean something.
11. Barry His players are begging to be cut so they can have good games.
12. Talbot What does he think of his teams execution? He's in favor of it.

Week 6 Claims

Calvin has checked in. Here are the claims as of Wednesday C.O.B. Week 6 Claims

Week 6 SR's are on the forum.

East meets West as JK and Best
Battle in "Other" Divisions

It appears that the Central Division has the power teams this year with Wallace, Deitrich and Outlaw. Overlooked are the leaders in the East and West, Jones/Klingman and Best. Both have 3-1 records and meet each other this week. Neither team impressed at the draft and neither team has put up stunning scores so far this year. In fact both stood out for non-production: JK won a game with a "16", the lowest winning total in five years. Best carded a snowman in week 2, the lowest score in two years. Somebody has to win those two divisions, and right now, JK and Best are the leaders.

Another 4-2 week to put me at 15-6-1. Am I getting better or is there no parity in the BRFL this year. It's easy to keep riding Wallace and downgrading Talbot. Will status quo continue? Is there a fork sticking in the Mo-ha? Why is Jackson smiling?

  • Mosakowski-Hale (-12) vs Stroupe
  • Jones-Klingman vs Best (-7.5)
  • Peil vs Wallace (-25)
  • Barry (-10) vs Talbot
  • Outlaw (-9.5) vs Czupryna
  • Deitrich (-18.5) vs Jackson

AB wins Loville Derby
Warrick Dunn to have Breakout Game

The post Terrell Davis era begins. Derrick Loville certainly wasn't overlooked among this week's claims, he will be joining AB's roster instead of replacing Davis on the Mo-Ha. The Mo-ha did add a back, chosing Terry Kirby of Cleveland discarded by Wallace eariler this season. Hmm wasn't Davis on Wallace's team last year? Terry Kirby, if an INT runback comes your way, stand aside.

Warrick Dunn was dropped by AB. The slumping Tampa back should have a huge game this Sunday against Green Bay. All players dropped by AB come up big the next weekend.

Just about all the St Louis Rams have been claimed. Stroupe got TD specialist Robert Holcombe, CJ the defense (cutting Washington!?) And you know CZ couldn't pass on Az Hakim, flavor of the week, possibly of all time, with four TDs last week.

Please post your drops on the forum.

1)CZ: Add Az Hakim Drop ???
2)TS: Add R Holcombe Drop Troy Edwards
3)AB: Add Derek Loville Drop Warrick Dunn
4)CJ: Add Kev Johnson and STL Def Drop KFaulk & WASH Def
5)MH: Add T Kirby and BUF Def Drop TB Def and ???
6)JK: Add R Sheehee and DAL Def Drop DEN Def and ???
Mo-Ha Await the Fate of Davis

10/4/99: Welcome to MRI Monday. It should have been a Monday to celebrate for Moha. A unusually easy win over Talbot coupled with the defeat of division rival Jones/Klingman should have meant that things were turning their way. However, an injury to number one pick Terrell Davis may keep their season in doubt. Davis is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday to determine if the knee injury suffered in week 4 is season ending.

Call it the "Bud Bowl"...It seemed at almost every TD scored in the Carolina Washington shootout yesterday belonged to Deitrich. He did not start Tim Biakabutuka, however... Still it was more than enough to romp over JK.

Peil and Barry may be getting off the snide. They lead CZ and Jackson respectively going into Monday night's Mia/Buf game.

Wallace looks likey to go to 4-0 as he is hammering Stroupe. Best moves to 3-1 with a win over Outlaw and could be alone in the West lead if Jackson cannot come back tonight vs AB. Midnight SR Raid
starts run on QBs

10/1/99: JK won't be able to count on "Bawling Brett" to pull him out of another one this week. One man team Stroupe will be out his man Manning this week. Both QBs are on a bye. Question is will there be anyone available to pick up. BUD and Mos claimed six QBs between them this early this morning while JK and Stroupe were nestled snug in their beds. Early this morning Wallace picked up the scent and claimed another.

So what did JK and Stroupe do? JK picked up San Diego. Actually, not a bad choice. Stroupe chose Philly. That leaves only Cleveland as the last QB eligible to be claimed. PIT QBs, dropped by Jackson this week, are not eligible unless a person required a QB for roster integrity and all were claimed.

Picking up Four QBs on special reserve. Is it legal? Yes. Should it be illegal, why not? We don't legislate strategy. Besides it "generates revenue for the league". But four QBs? If you are feeling that generous, why not give to the United Way?

No one is disparaging the prognosticator after another 4-2 week. After their public humilatation last week and the flogging in the press, who do the Mo-ha line it up with this week? Will Talbot, Barry and Peil ever win? Is JK really 3-0 and what team has to come out flatter than I-95 road kill to make them 4-0? Does anyone dare challenge Wallace? And who the hell is Bud planning to use those four QBs against anyway? Check out all the predictions:

The BRFL has visited yet another continent as these results come to you from Argentina. I can get statistics and Monday Night Football! The game is broadcast in Spanish by Fuad Reviez, a familiar BRFL name.

Please check your results. Here is what I have:

  • Outlaw 40 Mosakowski-Hale 22
  • Jones Klingman 27 Talbot 18
  • Best 36 Peil 27
  • Stroupe 35 Barry 30
  • Deitrich 45 Czupryna 36
  • Wallace 34 Jackson 30

Week 3 Preview

9/24 The old Wallace is back. Not the one that had losing records the last two season, save for a little playoff magic in 97, but the old Wallace. Making moves, scoring big. He dominates the statistical categories. I predict he will roll right through week 3 as he meets fellow unbeaten Jackson.

We also have a Super Bowl rematch from last season, but it will be a blowout this time...Talbot is struggling big time, but gets just what the doctor ordered, a matchup with his personal punching bag, JK. All the predictions in the preview below.

Talbot Loses Anderson

He's off to a terrible start this year, and this isn't going to help...

Talbot lost first round pick Jamal Anderson of Atlanta for the season. He has a torn ACL. Did Talbot snag his replacement or was he asleep at the switch on claim day? Check out all the week 3 claims and note where drops are pending.

Deitrich Skins Outlaw

Although it seemed like just about everyone on Outlaw's roster scored, it wasn't enough to overcome Deitrich and his red-hot Redskins. Stephen Davis scored three quick touchdowns and Brad Johnson threw for three to allow BUD and Outlaw to tie at 45 coming into Monday Nights game. Then it was academic.. Emmitt Smith's quick TD put Outlaw out of his misery early.

New Look for the Website

Trying out a new look for the site. What I'm trying to do is make it a little more streamlined for news as well as give us more access points to other sites on the web. I'm also trying to highlight the fact that we have been in existance since 1986 and that we have stats that go back that far.

Week 3 Stats to be delayed

If stats appear at all next week, they will be late due to me being out of the country and not me possibly not having access to internet resources.

League Braces for Floyd

9/15 Raleigh is in line for a hit from Hurricane Floyd. This is a reminder to get your default line ups on the forum in the event we are all incommunicato during week 2. Recalling Fran in those pre-forum days of 1996: One of the first calls I got after phone service was restored was a BRFL call.

Let's hope that this Floyd is like former Saint, Colt and Raven...A Floyd "Turner", as in turns out to sea.

Week 2 Claims

Lots of sterling performances out there by unclaimed players. There is sure to be a lot of claims on Tuesday. Below is an explanation of how the rules apply to claiming in week 2.

The order of claim goes in order of record, followed by points. The first six week 1 losers get to pick first, fewest points scored to the most. The six winners pick next, fewest points scored to the most. Ties, if any, are decided by a coin flip. Here is the claiming order:

  • 0-1, 21 CZ/TAL (Coin Flip)
  • 0-1, 42 BUD/STP (Coin Flip)
  • 0-1, 45 MOS
  • 0-0-1, 21 DP/AB (Coin Flip)
  • 1-0 34, OUT
  • 1-0 40, CJ
  • 1-0 49, JK
  • 1-0 58, BST
  • 1-0 64, WAL

Please specify a list of players you want and how many you want from that list. Keep in mind you get the highest available person on your list in a given round. Unlike the draft, this is not "serpentine".

Pre-Season Claim Rules

8/30 The commissoner has clarified rules on claims prior to the beginning of the season.
  • No claims accepted until Tuesday September 7.
  • Claims will be handled in draft order. Mosakowski-Hale will have the first pick.

Overcoming the Post Draft Blues

9/1OK, the draft is done...Time to line them up, let them play!

Not so fast...

the season is still a ways off.

September 12... Plenty of time to read the papers, watch NFL*2*night, surf ESPN.COM and wince when one of your players is mentioned as being demoted, nicked up or God forbid...cut!

To ease the passage to the first weekend of football, or to the first claim day, check out the results of every draft ever held!!

  • All 14 drafts!
  • See who drafted...William Perry!!!
  • Check out CZ's "all injured and holdout" draft. The year he won it all.
  • Wonder in amazement why everyone in the league felt that they always had to draft a QB first... even in year after Jerry Rice scored 22 times in 12 games!
  • See who drafted...Blair Thomas!!!
  • Check out the dates and locations of those sweaty late Summer evenings.
  • See who drafted...Roger Vick!!!

8/30Vote for the team that you think had the best draft.

Draft at Jones' House, Sunday August 29, 6:00 PM

The draft will take place at Jones' house on Sunday, August 29. Click here for directions.

Jones is also having a pool party Friday night and we are invited. He says he wants to get us drunk and make stupid trades.

Although these rules are not yet official, but are likely to pass, please bring:

  • 10 dollars for Jones. (Pay as You Party)
  • 100 Dollar initiation and escrow fee.

Draft Order Selection

Here is the draft selection order for the 1999 BRFL season. Wallace is handling the selection process.
.........Team Position Selected
  1. Mosakowski-Hale 1
  2. Jones/Klingman 2
  3. Peil 3
  4. Barry 4
  5. Outlaw 5
  6. Talbot 6
  7. Deitrich 7
  8. Wallace 8
  9. Czupryna 9
  10. Jackson

  12. Stroupe
F.Y.I. Champs is defunct. Sorry to Wallace and CZ who actually made it there. Thanks to Rich Berger, chairman of our Alumni Association, for catching that for us. We has it at the Triangle Outlet Mall (Factory shops) instead. Jackson, Peil, Best, Outlaw and Berger were there. Berger drew the names and Calvin the numbers. Believe it or not, #1 was last out of the bag...

BRFL Schedule

The schedule has been released. It follows the usual template: Division games in weeks 1 and 2, and 11 - 14. NFL has three team bye weeks in weeks 3-9, one team bye weeks all other times. We want to schedule divison games when there as many teams in action as possible. The teams off during our playoffs were the weaker teams last year.

Minnesota (week 11) and Denver (week 12) are off during division play. Be wary of bye weeks when drafting your team Sunday night.

1999 BRFL Schedule

Week 1 is Sept 12....Two weeks after the draft.

1999 Rule Changes

Rule change voting is complete.

Nine teams voted: AB, OUT, and MOS did not vote.

Preseason Update

Number of Teams to remain at 12

The executive committee, acting on what it thinks are the wishes of the league, has decided to remain in a 12 team division format. No proposal was entered to change this.

Twelve of Twelve announce their return

Everyone is back...Sorry Brian.
