Week 2: Points Shower on Some Teams, Others Dry

Wallace is the "Sammy Sosa" for the BRFL...He has turned in back to back 60 point weeks.
He seems to be hogging all the points in the league. His 130 points is 30 points more than
his nearest competitor, Bud.
Marvin Harrison is the real deal. He has scored 5 TDs already this year. That's more
than Talbot's whole team.
And a very un-Talbot like team it is, having only scratched out 25 points so far this year. Last year the headlines were about Talbot scoring mega points and losing. He set the record with 60 in a loss, and then 64. At this writing, Talbot awaits word on the fate of first round pick Jamal Anderson, who injured his knee Monday night. The Tuesday vultures are circling. |

Despite scoring 16 points, JK is 2-0 and leading the East. Rumor is that Klingman
went over at Barry's house to watch NFL Primetime and is still there, unable to
go home due to Floyd's flooding. Next week Klingman and his opponent Talbot will be watching the games
over at arch-rival Stroupe's. (There is a hidden ECU joke in there. Why else
would I mention Klingman by name).
After only scoring 33 points in the first two weeks, AB is crying "No Moss"... as in "where is Randy Moss?". The first round pick has yet to dent the stat sheet. The other guys aren't making many dents either. |

Last weeks lost to JK most have shaken up the Mo-ha pretty bad. The went out and
spent big time: a Calvin-like spree that cost them 8 dollars in transactions.
A check of last years transactions indicated that these former tightwads didn't
spend their eighth buck until week 14! At least it was money well spent. Gameday
acquisition, Johnny Morton scored 7, and SR kicker Martin Gramattica tallied 8, 6
more than regular kicker Todd Petersen.
How bad has it gotten for Peil...This bad: He finally gets a breakout week from one of his players, Kimble Anders, and Anders gets injured and is out for the year. |

This is the kind of game that makes the BRFL. Dead heat on Sunday, everything on
line for Monday. A field goal battle would have favored Outlaw and Morten
Andersen. A Dallas ball control night would have favored BUD and Emmitt Smith.
Smith goes in twice, Bud wins and Outlaw has a bench full of splinter squad.
Bud may have loaded his roster with Redskins as back-ups and bye week fill-ins to appease his sentiments. However, his favorite team is scoring all kinds of points. Stephen Davis had three scores before Outlaw finished the Sunday paper. Brad Johnson tallied three more as the 'Skins knew that no lead is safe. Outlaw didn't stay down long as he rallied behind NE QBs throwing to Ben Coates. One problem, Coates was on Outlaw's bench. A Jacksonville RB was scoring on the ground... Another problem: it wasn't Fred Taylor, but James Stewart, subbing for the injured Taylor. Stewart also on Outlaw's bench. Hope was still alive on Monday with the score tied 45-all. Then it was Emmitt's turn. |

A battle of have and have nots in the BRFL and the IBM pension plan. Jackson is
2-0, over 40 and secure in his future. Stroupe is 0-2, 19 days shy of turning 40
by the pension plan cut off, and insecure in his future.
Jackson is secure because of the 18 teams that started 2-0 in division seasons, 12 made the playoffs. Stroupe starts 0-2. Only 2 0-2 teams have ever turned it around and made the playoffs in division seasons. The last was Talbot last year. Stroupe isn't scoring enough to be Talbot. Regarding the pension plan, Stroupe has to feel proud that as of July 1, 1999, he was probably the most experienced 39 year old at IBM. |

Four more points this week does not represent significant improvement for CZ.
But a win is a win. SF QB's tossed a pair after being shut out in week one. The long series between CZ and Best is now tied at 9 each. The patterns have been Best wins five, CZ wins five, Best wins one, CZ wins one, Best wins three, CZ wins three. For Best it was only the second time in 167 BRFL games that he failed to score a touchdown. It was his lowest score since 1990, when he scored five points in a lost to Stroupe. It was also the first BRFL game in 22 weeks to feature a single digit score. The last: JK 50, Peil 8 in wk 13 1997. |

Week 2 PreviewInteresting that there isn't any 1-0 teams playing other 1-0 teams this week. We could either have parity, or several 2-0 teams. However the way I see it, Wallace, Outlaw and Jackson will be 2-0. Stroupe, Talbot and Bud 0-2 and the rest of us in between. Last Week: I opened the season on a winning note. I was able to correctly forecast JK over MOS, Wallace's big week and Jackson winning easily. I missed my own game with Stroupe and thought Talbot would have opened stronger. 3-2-1 Mosakowski-Hale vs PeilGood think MO-HA isn't playing JK this week. The forum might have something like this: "What does Mo-Ha have in common with Terrell Davis? Ans: they all have a limp wrists. Actually had Jones had written that line it would have been a lot nastier. However, Davis' wrist injury is a concern. However, so is Denver's 0-1 start. I'm sure Davis will play...he loves to shread the Chiefs. Regarding his QB, Seattle travels to Chicago this week. Will Mike Holmgrem suffer another beating at the hands of an ex-NFL Central foe?The Vikes offense received plenty of criticism for only scoring 17 points against Atlanta. To appease their fickle fans, look for them to open it up a little more at home vs the Raiders. This game recalls one played this very week 8 years ago in Peil's initial season. Jim Kelly threw a BRFL record 6 TDs and Peil still lost. He had little else to show. Expect MOS to sweat a little, but win against the QB team that won it all for him. Jones-Klingman vs BarryKevin Dyson was drafted 11 spots ahead of Randy Moss last year. Moss went on to have the Monster season while Dyson struggled. Last week, it was Dyson putting up the Moss-like stats while Moss struggled. This weeks BRFL matchup pits JK's Dyson and AB's Moss. Moss may have a good game, but Dyson will have a good game vs Cleveland. Here is a stat that sticks out like a sore thumb: Brett Favre is at his worst when playing in the Silverdome. Then there is the matter of the sore thumb. Expect the toe of Ryan Longwell to carry Green Bay. That's still OK for JK. I actually had to look up who AB uses at QB. It's Jacksonville. They were actually outshined by the team AB had on the bench. Dallas, they of the 31 points last week. The winner of this game has always scored over at least 43 points. The loser in all but one game has scored at least 38. JK lives by the shootout, dies by the shootout. Edge to Adam Outlaw vs DeitrichOutlaw has got to be thinking "good thing I didn't play Bud last week." Bud would have won handily rather than losing to red-hot Wallace. New England faces Indy - a game that has the highest over under on the board. Given the unproven running attack, and a rare healthy reciever corp including Outlaw's Ben Coates, I expect him to reap a windfall of points in this shootout. Fred Taylor is due in the end zone this week as well.Deitrich has a dilemma: which QB to choose. Both Washington and Denver has good QB games in losing causes last week. Both match ups are on the road with Denver's looking a bit more favorable. Yet, Bud picked up Albert Connell indicating he may go with a Redskin based attack. I like Outlaw to win this in a close game. Bud will be left to wonder if he will again end up into an 0-4 hole like last year - a victim of the schedule. Talbot vs WallaceWallace looked crisp out of the gate in week 1, while Talbot struggled. Based on his pick-up this week, he intends to "ride'm Cowboy" with both Rocket Ismail and Michael Irvin as receivers. An interesting strategy based on Dallas' history of not throwing for a lot of TDs. However, like that is going to matter: Tennessee is home this week against Cleveland and you once again have to like Eddie George and Steve McNair.Talbot's big back attack was flat on its back last week. His receivers faired poorly as well. His team has explosive possibilities, but his two key players, Jamal and the Arizona QBs face tough road tests. Talbot probably won't heat up until Arizona (as in the weather) cools down. The NFL doesn't schedule Arizona at home in the daytime in the September. It's another big week for Wallace and another down week for Talbot. Czupryna vs BestThis week the newspapers are filled with stories about the aging 49'er QB Steve Young: "Is it Time to Hang it up, Steve?" It seems that every time Young gets this kind of press, he comes out and has a monster game. And lookee here, he gets the Saints at home. The beneficiary of this anticipated windfall will be none other than CZ, a man who knows a thing or two about aging. Best, post Vinny: Will he be wallowing in the Mirer? Best stuck with the Jets for at least this week. With Keyshawn, he still hopes they can be his bread and butter. Somewhere down the line he may have to jump on a "flavor of the week" QB. This looks like a romp for CZ. He has a favorable QB situation and he has history on his side: Best has not beaten him in division play since 1988. Jackson vs StroupeStroupe is a bit nicked up with Ricky Williams and Rod Smith. The Indy - New England game looks like a shootout and that might help. Jackson, on the other hand, should have a good week with either Buffalo or Pittsburgh. Jackson will prevail and go 2-0. |
