1999 BRFL Week 6 Results |
|
There is a good team in the West, and it took out the East leader in convincing
fashion. Credit Jackson with a timely SR. Steve Beuerline scored 25 points, but
it isn't like CJ needed them to whip up on Jones-Klingman. Jackson also got a big
game from the ST Louis D with two returns and Ed McCaffery with two TDs.
For JK as far goes, so go they. Favre did not throw a TD, and JK tallied their lowest point total of the year and their number of points lowest since a loss to Barry Week 8, 1997. |
Deitrich 26 Stroupe 23BUD box score - STP box score |
It would be big news if Emmitt Smith didn't score on Monday night... He
did, but not until less than two minutes were left in the game. Emmitt's score
helped Bud eek out a 26-23 win over Stroupe. For Stroupe payback continues to
come in late Monday TDs that send him down to defeat. In Stroupe's first year,
he won the championship on a late Flipper Anderson TD on the last Monday night
game of the year. Since then, he has gone down to defeat several times on the
last Monday TD..
In trade, Kareem Abdul Jabbar is a Brown. This might be good news for Stroupe as he was getting no action with Miami in the last couple weeks. This was expected to be a high scoring game for Bud, with the Redskins coming off the bye. It seems that the Skins have improved, on defense, negating the need for Bud's players to stage furious rallies. |
Wallace 40 Czupryna 31WAL box score - CZ box score |
After a distressing tie with Peil, Wallace found success playing the other senior citizen in the league. The Bus finally got out of the garage with a two TD week. Tennessee, while not spectacular, continues to be a steady producer as a QB. The 5-0-1 contines to be Wallace's best start, better than 4-0-2 in '91. 40 points was respectable, but a big number eluded Wallace as he bench Olindo Mare and 22 points. It was a curious move as Mare had kicked four fields goals in his previous two games, and booted six on Sunday. Mare and the unused Jason Hanson eached scored 22 points, the second highest total in league history. It was the second time this year Wallace benched his primary kicker in favor of Arizona's Chris Jacke and the second time Jacke only tallied 4. Call it the Robin Ventura strategy: hit a grand slam, get credit for a single. Despite the shooout with Carolina, CZ's SF QBs didn't reap many TDs, just one, and it was late in the game. There were many calls for Steve Young to hang it up. Perhaps this is why Young fell to ninth in the draft despite a huge year in 1998 - he's only one good knock from retirement. Tyrone Wheatley did score twice to keep CZ close. |
Mosakowski-Hale 29 Best 19MOS box score - BST box score |
If there was a week, the Mo-ha could have been had, it might have been this one.
However, they managed to win with Kurt Warner tossing one TD, but it was to
Issac Bruce. Eric Moulds also scored, but hurt his hamstring and will be lost for
3-4 weeks,
Best thought he could get clever and start Pittsburgh QBs and Troy Edwards. The strategy was that PIT was playing Cincinnati and that Pit was MOS favorite team. However, the Steelers kept it on the ground, and the strategy failed. If he started the Jets and Antowain Smith, he would have won. |
Peil 26 Talbot 13DP box score - TAL box score |
Peil should be encouraged by the change of QB in Minnesota. It reunites him with
Jeff George, a Peil QB in years past. Signs of life with his no name backs: Lamar
Smith scored and Greg Hill is off the pine in Detroit.
Ah, October...turning leaves, the State Fair and Robert Smith's injury. Add to Talbot's misery the injury to Jake Plummer. His ring finger caught in a helmet. Talbot wants to give his winless team a finger...the middle one. |
Barry 45 Outlaw 27AB box score - OUT box score |
Big game for Barry: his highest point total in 1999. Shrewed SR of the Tennessee
Defense was a good move as they produced 10 points. Jacksonville QBs continue
to struggle. Perhaps they are held back by a good defense which does not require
many scoring activities.
Outlaw is playing his way into being the odd man out in the central. After a promising start, he's scored three straight games in the 20s. |

Week 6 Leaders |
Week 6 PreviewMosakowski-Hale (3-2) vs Best (3-2)Mos by 12.2This is a match-up of second place teams of diverging skills. Mosakowski-Hale is red hot. Best seems to be fading after some early success. For the Mo-ha, this game against Best represents some unfinished business from last season...Best was their only unavenged defeat: Best won 39-32 in week 6.In the NFL, if one team wins big the first time around, the second time the opponent usually has the figured out and the score is held in check. Case in point, St Louis has their second game with Atlanta (the Rams won 35-7 in week 3 when they were benched by MOS). However, it's been only three weeks, Atlanta has had little time to improve and if anything has gotten even more banged up. It would have to be overconfidence that does in the Rams. Even if it is wishful thinking that Best has a chance, can he score enough to beat Mos on an off week? Oakland faces a tough game in Buffalo...does he dare go to the horrid Mirer and the Jets against more pass friendly Indy? Elsewhere in the lineup, Carter is hobbling and Antowain Smith is fumblng his way out of a job. Mo-ha won't get their 77, but whatever he does get, it will be enough. Jones-Klingman (4-1) vs Jackson (3-2)Jackson by 3JK is on the upswing after a convincing win over Best and the emergence of a two back attack (Alstott and Cecil Collins) to complement Favre. Alstott is off this week. Ineffective TE Shannon Sharpe was injured and JK promptly replaced him with Green Bay WR Corey Bradford. It's a smart move designed to play to their strength...Favre. In a defensive move, the SR'ed Buffalo TE Jay Reimersma...at the very same moment Calvin was going to do the same.Jackson's draft philosophy was to draft good players from good teams. What happens when those teams (DEN, MIN, NYJ, ATL) go into the tank? It was hard to sit there Aug 29 and predict that and such things as the rise of St Louis. Regarding players that are performing, Terrell Owens has a high ankle sprain, but is playable. Buffalo QB face a tough Oakland D. JK should win and we'll start to hear a lot of noise about how dominate the East is and how weak the West is. Peil (1-2-2) vs Talbot (0-5)DP by 13This must be the "Toilet Bowl", because Talbot is definitely in the tank. There is so much deadwood in this game, it could also be known as the "Termite Bowl". BUT... There are some opportunities here. Arizona faces Washington at home in a game that has shootout potential. Carl Pickens faces Pittsburgh, a team he loves to torch. I think the key match up involves the Vikings: Min QB for Peil and Robert Smith for Talbot. Vikes play at Detroit in a must win game. Buried in the stats of the Vike's loss to the Bears is the fact the Robert Smith ran 12 times for 107 yards. The Vikes probably overlooked Smith as all they wanted to do was cram the ball into Randy Moss. The feeling here is Smith comes up big and and takes the heat off Cunningham. As a result I'm picking Talbot. Peil a 13 point favorite? That'll never happen again.Barry (2-2-1) vs Outlaw (3-2)Outlaw by 7.5This game is the toughest to predict... Does Adam have a chance? Jacksonwille is playing Cleveland. At home. Right now the weather calls for Hurricane Irene. The edge there has to go to the ground game. And Outlaw. Provided he starts the right Jax Back. He's been burned two weeks straight by choosing the wrong guy. Here's hoping Outlaw does his homework.Deitrich (3-2) vs Stroupe (1-4)Bud by 13The records for most points given up in two weeks in the BRFL is 160. In weeks 11 and 12, 1991, Wallace was the victim in back to back weeks when Outlaw and Jackson both scored 80 points. 80 was then a league record. This week Stroupe has a shot of breaking that record. 77 was put up against him last week. This week he faces Bud with Washington playing Arizona. Wasn't that game like 45-42 last year? And this year Washington CAN score... Tim, my advice to you is to score as many points as you can to work your way into the playoffs as a points qualifier. You happen to have the misfortune of playing the two hottest BRFL teams at their peak weeks. The question is not that Bud will win, but is AB's 90 point scoring record in jeopardy?Wallace (4-0-1) vs Czupryna (1-4)WAL by 19.5Call the the "Superstars Contemplating Retirement" bowl. CZ has still groggy Steve Young, who may be mulling over a Senate bid in Utah. Right now is wondering if he can stand up in the shower. Wallace has the neck-collared Michael Irvin with cheers of Philly fans still ringing in his ear.Another week of 1-AA competition for BuckeyeBobbyBoy. However, last week, he did not fare too well, as Peil came back to tie him on Monday night. This week, he has the Rocket on Monday night to hopefully pick up Irvin's numbers. His nominal QB team, Tennessee has the Saints. Will Wallace stick with them or give the SR lines a workout? There isn't much out there... CZ gets the 49'ers against the Panthers, who play without a defense. SF, stinging after a total wipeout by the Rams, may be poised to put up some points. The Panthers are offensively capable to keep pace. This could be a shootout. Wallace is one of these teams that tend to be very streaky. He's prone to long win streaks and long slumps that tend to go 3-4 weeks. I'm reading last weeks tie as a downgrade for Wally, and I'm picking CZ in a upset. |
