Hendrick Traphagen

ca. 1668 - 1723

arabq_th.jpg (6748 bytes)endrick\Henry Traphagen was born about 1668 in Bushwick, Kings County, New York. He is the ancestor of all of Willem Jansen Traphagen's descendants who bear the name Traphagen, Traphagan and Triphagen in America. Among these are a notable banking family in Jersey City, New Jersey, a fashion design school founder and the Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Yearling.

Hendrick married Sarah Kierstede about 1697 in Kingston, New York. Sarah was baptized at the Kingston DC April 12, 1671, the daughter of Roelof and Eycke (Roosa) Kiersted. She was a granddaughter on Hans Kiersted and Sarah Roelofsen and thus a great-granddaughter of the noted Anneke Jans. She died sometime after April 15, 1730 when she witnessed with her son Johannes, the baptism of her grandson, Henry Middaugh, in the Harlingen DC.

Henry lived in Kingston until about 1711 when he moved to Somerset County, New Jersey, first at Three Mile Run in eastern Somerset County and later in Bridgewater township near Readington. He left a will which named all of his children except the youngest, Blandina.
