Male or female?
Trimming the Nails
                  Males
Males will grow larger and heavier than females of the same strain and are often more lively.  When males reach sexual maturity, they produce somewhat of an unpleasant smell, which disappears as soon as the cavy is neutered.
                 Females
Females are smaller than males, and do not produce the unpleasant smell when they mature. They are said to be more affectionate, but that affection probably depends on the nature of that animal, not its gender. Be careful not to purchase a pregnant female.

                                 Pointers
1. Guinea pigs are a long commitment.  Make sure they are the right pet for you.  Are you willing to handle a five to eight year devotion?
2. Guinea pigs are social animals.  Observe the cavy which you are going to choose.  How do they relate to their siblings?  Lethargic cavies who sit quietly in the corner are probably ill.
3. Check the fur carefully.  If there is hairloss or thinning hair all over the body in patches they are probably ill or old. (Hairloss behind the ears is normal.  Check out this page here.)
4. Ask to see the teeth of your chooen cavy.  If the teeth are not properly aligned you are bound to run into some health problems
5. Check the feet and nails carefully.
