Hot, hot, hot, hot…… to hot to do anything. Ji and Sheri wanted to come up from Alex last weekend, but then cancelled in the last minute. Spent the day doing absolutely nothing. Some reading, telly, writing some e-mails. Waiting for my hangover to go away. Thursday night was quite good at the club. We had a “camel race”. 4 stuffed camels racing along the pool table – pushed along by a broom. Was really funny. You could place bets on the outcome of the races. After the fifth race I was in the number 3 spot. And, lo and behold, I won the last race! With Diamond Lil…. Won a day for 2 at the Nile Hilton with use of the pool. Good, ey? I’ll probably wait for Anne to come back from her holidays back home and ask her to come along. I wonder if an over-night stay is included?

I have decided that I am getting too fat. Action required: Eat less. Action taken so far: None. Hm. Not good. The problem is that I do not want to eat less. But I am developing a distinctive love handle down there. And I don’t like it. Perhaps I should try to limit myself to a sandwich and some salad in the evening instead of cooking dinner. Ok, let’s agonise a little longer over that….

Went to see X-Men 2 last week. Very nice. Lots of action, couple of laughs, some drama…. Very very loud….. You could actually almost not hear those mobiles going off any more. During the intermission – yep, they do still have those here – we stepped outside to get a drink  and check if our hearing was still working. “Man, that movie is loud”. “What? Can’t hear ya, it’s so fucking loud in there….”. “What?”. One especially persistent fucker kept getting messages and calls on his mobiles in the row in front of me, just a couple seats to the left. So eventually my humble personality took over, I leant forward and whispered, “Could you please switch off that phone”. He did not exactly take any notice. Half an hour later. Ring-dingle-dangle-whatever-tune-he-just-downloaded and steam started coming from my ears. So, polite as I am, I leant forward again and said, this time a little louder “Will you switch off THAT FUCKING PHONE!!!” He twitched, ducked, turned around and stammered “Sorry!”. Prat. My neighbour subsequently fell to his knees, kissed my feet and thanked me profously….No, just kidding….Sometimes it has its perks to be a bitch.

Was invited to a coptic wedding Thursday night. Been to one of those before, so I knew what to expct in terms of ritual, Arabic, Coptic…. Best moment….Priest facing the altar and swinging that thing with the incense, smoke wallowing up around him….”The priest….the priest….the priest is on fire!” No, really, it looked like he had caught fire…Really hot in the church. No a/c, no fan….after an hour I was boiling. So eventually we all bundled up into some cars and went to the hotel where the reception was. Everybody dressed up to the nines. Plenty of jewelery. Inches of make-up. Definitely not for me. I was just a tat underdressed. Pants, tank top and no make-up. At least I was comfortable. Sat at a table with a bunch of people from work. Was quite nice, actually.

A 13-hour day, not what the doctor has prescribed…. Had to cancel dinner with Anne. Never mind, will do it on Wednesday. Tomorrow planning to go and see “X-Men 2”. Can’t wait to see Wolverine without shirt…
Saturday had dinner with my Arabic teacher. Ate lots of Koshari, met some new people, was quite interesting. Met this very spiritual couple that are members of this Korean guy called Moon – some religious leader from South Korea. Not sure, but I think we are talking a religious sekt here (sekt? sect? How on earth is that spelled in English?). I seem to remember some bad press. Have to look it up on the internet….
Thursday night I am invited to a wedding, so every evening up to the weekend something is up now. Dang, I’ll be missing my favourite shows on telly again. The re-run of Star Trek, the re-run of Buffy, the re-run of CSI, the re-run of Stargate….Hey, hold on, do you recognise a pattern here? Should I switch my satellite operator?

I had some spam in my inbox from Bill Clinton selling Viagra. That’s a funny one for a change! Pretty uneventful week. Work. Come home, watch telly, fix and eat dinner, go to bed early. Being a grown-up really sucks sometimes. No plans this weekend. After the last two Fridays on the hoof, I needed some couch-potato-time badly. But on the upside, Jihan, my Arabic teacher, invited me over tomorrow night to meet some new people. Good one, as all my friends have pretty much gone home to the States and Canada by now for their summer break.

I’ve been busy. And consequently too lazy to write much. 2 nights a week with Arabic classes (finished for now, thank god), 1 night meeting with the others for a beer, going out on the weekends. Last weekend I went to Alex, the weekend before I spent at the pool of the new Marriott on the desert road. Nice hotel, nice pool. Met a couple that just moved to Cairo from Tehran. He is Canadian, she is from South Africa. They lived in Iran for one and a half years and were quite happy to move to somewhere with a lot less restrictions. All my other friends will bugger of home in the next two weeks – school holidays till the end of August. So I’ll give those two a ring, as they will be pretty much the only ones to stick around during summer. Perhaps I’ll start going to Alex more on the weekends, now that it is getting really hot around here. We topped 40 degrees last weekend in Cairo!

Just seen at the movies…

”The Four Feathers” with Heath Ledger. He had black hair, that took some getting used to! I think this is a remake of a 60ies movie called “The White Feather” or something like that. Djimon Hounzu from “Gladiator” was in it. That guy has a stunning body! Anyway, good movie! Some really good action scenes. And Heath Ledger is very believable. The movie is set during the British campaign to Sudan to rescue General Gordon from the troops of the Maadi. Remember Charlton Heston in “Khartoum”? That’s the one. We are talking around 1850. The desert always looks so beautiful in those movies. The filmmakers obviously can’t have shot that around Cairo. Actually, the movie was shot in Marokko. Betrayal, love, loyalty, a couple of battles… On a scale from 1 to 5 a solid 4 – it started a bit slow.
...to my weblog. There probably won't be something new every day, but keep coming by and have a look what makes my day (or doesn't....). And if you have any comments, drop me a line in my guestbook!
