Innocence Projects & Evidence:
The Innocence Project: The Innocence Project at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, created by Barry C. Scheck and Peter J. Neufeld in 1992, is a non-profit legal clinic. This Project only handles cases where postconviction DNA testing of evidence can yield conclusive proof of innocence. For more information regarding what we do and what kinds of cases we handle, please click on the Innocence Project tab or read our FAQ page.

Resource List of Innocence Projects: National and State list of "Innocence Projects" that may take a case. Some of the Projects show under what circumstances they will consider a case. You must contact them with all facts and they will decide, IF they will take a case or not.

Brainwave Lie Detection:
The Pinocchio Effect: A liar’s nose doesn’t grow longer—but a USC psychology researcher is tracking other telltale signs of deception embedded in the human brain.

1-15-2005 United Kingdom: The future of lying
.As the British government unveils plans to make lie detector tests mandatory for convicted paedophiles, some scientists in the US are working on more advanced technology which might be better equipped at detecting deception.

The US Department of Defense has given Dr Jennifer Vendemia (University of South Carolina) a $5m grant to work on her theory that by monitoring brainwaves she can detect whether someone is lying. She claims the system has an accuracy of between 94% and 100% and is an improvement on the existing polygraph tests, .....

Her system involves placing 128 electrodes on the face and scalp, which translate brainwaves in under a second. Subjects only have to hear interrogators' questions to give a response. But the system has a long way to go before it replaces polygraphs, ..... : by Chris Summers, BBC News ..more.. See also: Creator of brainwave lie detector fears it may be misused

The brain scan that can read people's intentions: A team of world-leading neuroscientists has developed a powerful technique that allows them to look deep inside a person's brain and read their intentions before they act. The research breaks controversial new ground in scientists' ability to probe people's minds and eavesdrop on their thoughts, and raises serious ethical issues over how brain-reading technology may be used in the future. --more--
Polygraph Evidence:
» The Polygraph and Lie Detection: This is quite an online book about "Polygraphs." Some pages take a bit longer to load, but the information is well worth the time. (The Open Book page image presentation framework is not designed to replace printed books. Rather, it is a free, browsable, nonproprietary, fully and deeply searchable version of the publication which we can inexpensively and quickly produce to make the material available worldwide.) »5-29 UK: When the detector lies: why polygraph use will be restricted!Serious questions have been raised about the use of lie detectors when it comes to the criminal justice system. Those involved in the Home Office's study into the use of the technology with convicted sex offenders admit that doubts over its accuracy mean it should not be used as an investigative tool or evidentially. However they believe regular polygraph testing is an effective way of monitoring paedophiles and protecting children. (Guardian Unlimited)....more....
» 6-20-03 Polygraph "Testing" Has No Scientific Basis: Despite claims of better than 90% accuracy, polygraph "testing" has not been proven through peer-reviewed scientific research to reliably work at better than chance levels under field conditions. (Anti Polygraph.org)
Penile Plethysmograph (Males):
PhotoPlethysmograph (Females):
» Misuse of Psychophysiological Arousal Measurement Data: ABSTRACT: Psychophysiological arousal measurement data (plethysmograph) is being misused in some state treatment programs, probation and parole departments, and courts. The high percentage of some control subjects with no history of deviant behavior who respond with deviant arousal patterns means that at the present time arousal measurement data cannot be used by itself to diagnose someone as a sexual deviant or to predict past or future behavior.

» Unresolved issues in scientific sexology This article discusses the state of knowledge in several areas of sexology related to attempts to measure and alter patterns of sexual arousal.

» Can you idenitify a sexual predator by use of the Penile Plethysmograph? While penile plethysmography has been studied using scientific methodology by practitioners and clinicians who find its predictive and forensic value to be well settled and accurate, the disparity within the community regarding the reliability and validity of the method when used forensically undoubtedly predicts a rocky road in the courtroom for its proponents when admissibility of predictive opinions on future sexual dangerousness is at issue. ....

» The Penile Plethysmograph in False Allegation Cases: The reliability of the device have been argued in court and penile plethysmographic evidence has been declared inadmissible because of its "questionable reliability." The case in which Dr. Tyson testified was heard by the North Carolina Court of Appeals. That Appeals Court upheld a lower court's exclusion of testimony by Dr. Gullick because her testimony was based upon the use of the penile plethysmograph. The defendant in the case was accused of sexually molesting ....

» Evidence of Penile Plethysmography, Psychological Profiles, Inventories and Other "Not a Pedophile" Character and Opinion Evidence Offered on Behalf of a Defendant in a Child Sexual Abuse Case is Inadmissible Under Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceutical ....
