Your Computer Class

During the next twenty-two days, you will participate in an intensive computer course using IBM compatible computers.  These computers are running at 133 mhz.  with 16 meg of RAM and a one gigabyte hard drive.

You will be using Word 97 and MS Publisher 97 running in Windows 98 to complete your assignments.  Most of your assignments will center around an occupation that you will choose to research.  You will print your assignments on a Hewlett Packard LaserJet 5L.

Personal Computer Systems (comp.)

Today, personal computer systems come in a variety of configurations and components.  The decision to purchase a personal computer is a major one.  The choice you make will depend on whether you need it to be portable or stationary, what peripherals or components you need, and how much money you can spend for a system.  Generally, the more speedy the microprocessor (400 mhz. and higher) and the more memory ( 64 MB or more) the better performance you will get when using the PC.  Color printers are more expensive than monochrome and Laser printers will give you better quality than dot matrix or ink jet printers.  A modem is necessary if you want to access the Internet.   If money were no object, choosing the best computer would be easy.  However, unless you are independently wealthy, the amount of money you spend does matter.

All systems are not the same.  You may choose to give up one component to gain another.   For example, you may choose to give up a modem that would let you access the Internet to gain a faster microprocessor, color printer, or larger capacity hard drive.  Or, you may give up a color laser printer to get more RAM, a modem or a larger monitor.  It’s your choice.

Look through the computer magazine that you have been given.  You will find many ads for computers, monitors, printers, and systems of all sizes.  Choose the one that you like; one that will suit your needs and budget.  Make sure that your chosen system includes a computer, a monitor, and a printer.   A comprehensive glossary of computer terms can be found at the end of the chapter in appendix A.
