Review: Pokemon Snap
As the intrepid Ash, your job is to explore the island's richly varied landscape and shoot pictures of the Pokémon, which the professor will then use to complete a definitive research paper. All the most popular Pokémon will be included. Before venturing forth in your special safari vehicle, Professor Oak will hand you a film roll of 60 shots. As you gradually add to your Pokémon portfolio, you'll open up vast new areas of the island to explore. Because wild creatures are unpredictable, no two expeditions and no two pictures will ever be the same. Each player will build a unique portfolio.
We love Pokemon. How can anyone not love Pokemon? If you don't love Pokemon then there's something horribly wrong with you and you should probably get yourself checked in to some kind of Pokemon-related therapy hospital. Not only are Pokemon great fun to catch but they look so adorable you just want to shoot them. Put down your shotgun, you sicko - we're talking about cameras, here. The aim of Pokemon Snap is to get yourself a nice eight-by-ten glossy of each and every Pokemon you can find. Makes a nice change from all the violence in most other games these days.
Of course, just walking up to a Pokemon and asking them to pose wouldn't make for much of a videogame, so it's a good thing for all concerned that most of them are pretty shy. You need to lure them out of their preferred hiding spots in each stage by using one of the many items you're equipped with, adding a strategy / puzzle element to the proceedings. It's quite possible to cruise through each rail-cart based level without getting a picture of all the Pokemon hiding away, but you'll miss out on many of the bonuses and other goodies that you could be rewarded with later on. At the end of each level your mentor, Professor Oak, takes a look at your happy snaps and grades your performance. Get a great grade and you're whisked off to the next level, where the more camera-shy Pokemon live.
Well that sounds well and good but how is it? A load of fun, especially for younger players. Snap's biggest drawcard is being able to see your favorite Pokemon work, rest and play in their natural environment, and the 3D graphics re-create the cartoon's visuals very well. Another sweet gimmick is the fact you can print out your best pictures at Blockbuster Video locations across the country - just the perfect thing for those who want to show off their photographic abilities. It's less of a game than Pokemon Stadium to be sure, but fans of the whole phenomenon will leap right to it.
