Review: Pokemon Puzzle League

Brainteasers...mindbenders...riddles...no matter what you call them, puzzles are a great way to engage your mind and have some fun. Now you’ll experience Poke-madness as never before, as you join Ash and Pikachu on their quest to earn the coveted title of Pokemon Puzzle Master.

But first be warned that this game is so chock full of Pokemon-ness that if you’re not a fan, you will be inundated with Pokemon paraphernalia. If you’re looking for a solid puzzle game, you’ll find that here as well.
The graphics are a real help, with bright, colorful backgrounds, characters, and even Pokemon specific puzzle pieces. As you try to line up blocks and make lines disappear, you’ll find the atmosphere pleasant and unassuming. Nintendo even throws in some cartoon clips, lots of voice, and a ton of different types of games to keep things interesting,

The sound also helps out, but becomes quickly annoying if you dislike the high-pitched chirping of most Pokemon characters. Every time you successfully connect a row of pieces, your character taunts your opponent, and every time you create a combo (stringing lines together), your Pokemon taunts the opponent. Its enough to want to make you Pikachu someone out for the lame sound.
Controlling the pieces is as simple as any other tetris-based game, and involves the directional pad (no analog) and one button. The only tricky part is when you play the game in the optional 3D mode. Game pieces will fill a cylindrical 3D playing field, so you have to watch the back of the playing field as well as the front.
But don’t be discouraged by the overt Pokemon marketing phase that Nintendo is going through. Pokemon Puzzle League is entertaining, light, and requires a small skill set. It also has a ton of alternative playing options (two-player versus, puzzles, timed play, and more), and hidden characters to unlock, so the game never gets boring. It may not be the best puzzle game out there, but it is fun.
