Review: Pokemon Puzzle League

Pokémon Trainers are able to conduct turn-based battles similar to the Game Boy versions of Pokémon, you can even use your Gameboy character via a special plug. With outrageous animation sequences and flashy special attack effects, you will make your Pokémon come to life like never before. Compete against four other players and proove who is the greatest Pokemon trainer.
Gotta gotta catch 'em all, gotta catch 'em all.Pokemon! Anyone who has this mind-numbing catchphrase permanently stuck in their head will have been eagerly awaiting this game for what seems like an eternity. The chance to see your favorite Pokemon battle each other in full color is one that deserves relishing, as it's a fantastic concept designed to get real Pokemaniacs abusing their parent's credit cards. Now the big question is, does the final game do the premise justice?

The premise, for those that don't know already, is that you connect your copy of Game Boy Pokemon to the Nintendo 64 (via the thoughtfully-included Transfer Pak) and watch the Pokemon that you caught and trained in the hand held game fight on the big screen. The next step is that you get a few other addicts into the game and before you know it there's a Pokemon free-for-all on your television. Included in the game are a range of pre-designed Pokemon, but the real appeal is seeing the ones that you personally caught on the Game Boy come to life in full 3D.
Unfortunately, that's pretty much all that there is to do in this game. Unlike Pokemon Snap, you can't bask in the cuteness of all the adorable characters. The animation routines consist entirely of being ready to attack, attacking and being attacked. Part of Snap's charm is just watching them all frolic around and play with each other - in Stadium the Pokemon are stilted, even though the detail level is higher. The league and tournament modes extend the gameplay a bit further, as do the range of essential multiplayer options. If that wasn't enough, there's even the extremely handy utility which lets you plug your copy of Game Boy Pokemon into the N64 and play it on the big screen in all of its blocky, four color glory. While this isn't exactly an essential game, it's perfect for die hard fans of the series.
