| Sarah and Duncan eventually exchanged addresses and phone numbers. Although Duncan wasn't ususally one for correspondence, he and Sarah kept up constant communication throughout the summer. Then Sarah went to a friend's wedding and met ... "Mahoney" (as they prefer to call him). Sarah had never had a boyfriend before and Mahoney did everything she thought a boyfriend was supposed to do (at least at first). They dated throughout Sarah's (and Duncan's) sophomore year -- much to Duncan's dismay. Duncan spent much of his time that year trying to avoid Sarah, though it proved difficult because they lived in the same dormitory (Poole Hall). Also, Sarah enjoyed stopping by Duncan and Corey's window and dorm room to say hello. Sarah had no idea how much Duncan liked her and Duncan never let on. During the last month of their sophomore year, the day after Mahoney broke up with Sarah, her mom and brother drove to Lexington to be with her. As they were leaving the dorm to go shoe shopping and to deSha's for lunch, Sarah stopped by Duncan's window. "Hey," she said, "I was dumped last night." Duncan said, "I'm sorry." "That's okay," she said, "my mom came down to cheer me up. I'll be okay." Duncan later said that although it was one of the saddest days of Sarah's life, it was his happiest. > |
