The alimentary canal consists of all the organs from the mouth, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach to the small and large intestines. It is 27ft. long in total. The bolus moves through the the oesophagus  using a propelling movement called peristalsis. When the bolus has been through the stomach and small intestine, it is still moving in a peristalsis movement only much slower than at the beginning of the alimentary canal.
