The salivary glands are glands in the mouth which produce saliva. The average amount of saliva produced a day is one litre. This saliva is used to moisten food which reduces the size of the food. This part is the very first step of digestive process. Whilest the food is being moistened by the salivary glands, the teeth are also breaking down the food by grinding/biting the food.
