The large intestine which is also called the colon, is approximately 4.5m long but is a lot larger in diameter than the small intesine. It has four main parts:
ascending colon
transverse colon
descending colon
sigmoid colon
The walls of the large intestine are protected by mucus. The mucus also helps hold the
chyme together. The large intestine has very little to no digestion at all. It absorbs moisture so that the faeces becomes more solid as it travels through, and digests any remaining nutrients which is very rare. It can take up to 20 hours for the faeces to pass all the way through the large intestine.
