JK Establishes Early Bragging Rights

It was a week of shootouts and injuries. The Cleveland Browns returned and netted 0 fantasy points! You could start an all overlooked team of Germaine Crowell, Rocket Ismail and Richard Huntley coupled with the benched Dallas QBs and would whipped anyone in the league.
49 JK GB Q 25, MAllstott 0, SSharpe 0, KDyson 14, CCalloway 6, TyDavis 0, RLongwell 4, DEN D 0

JK pulled off the impossible Monday night. MOS' Terrell Davis was held to 0 points. How rare is that? JK did have some skin in the game with Shannon Sharpe and the Denver D, holding TD to no TDs IS something to write in the forum about. Trust me, they did.

Brett Favre netted them 25, but that's Favre... a no brainer starter. The real genius (and I can't believe I'm using that term to describe these guys) came in the start of Kevin Dyson, TEN receiver. You figured these clowns would have started holdout Joey Galloway. Dyson had his breakout game and scored 14 points.

For Mosakowski-Hale, a painful loss. But boys, let's learn a lesson here. Two beats one. Last year Favre (2) beat Davis (1) in the opener. In fact for the last five years the team drafting number 2 has beaten the team drafting number 1 in the first game of the season. The last win by a team drafting first? 1994, Berger 59 CZ 58, and the Old Man should have won that game as he had Splinter Squad out the wazoo. And speaking of Splinter Squad, how about Issac "ouch my hammy" Bruce. His six would have put the Moha writing in, instead of complaining about the forum.

One game and already a tie has occurred. Well, I can safely make a prediction. There will be no tie games in the NFL this year. One of the most incredible statistics is that in the history of the BRFL, there has only been two years where there wasn't a tie: 1989 and 1997. During that same period of time (1986 - ) there was only two years where ties in the NFL occurred: 1989 and 1997.

The tie is Peil's career eigth. The most in the BRFL breaking a tie with Stroupe and Wallace who each have seven.

For AB, he manages to have a Splinter Squad member of epic, but not record proportions. Dallas' QBS ride the pine with 31 points. Jackson last season had a 33 point player on his splinter squad with PIT QBs.

Talbot is usually fierce in openers, winning five straight from 1993-1997. However in very other year, 1990 -1992 and 1998, he lost is opener. Can you detect a pattern here? Those were the years of divsion play... Perhaps Talbot does not like to play in the division so early in the season. (Actually, in 1992 division play was not in week 1 due to a game cancellation due to Hurricane Andrew). So it's division play and hurricanes. That does not bode well for this week...

Outlaws's faith in Edggerin James and Curtis Enis paid off as both players scored their first NFL touchdowns. First Round pick, Fred Taylor did not score, but his backup, James Stewart (on Outlaw's bench), did. With the win, Outlaw was able to even with Talbot in the category of all time winning percentage.

The leagues oldest rivalry was renewed as Jackson defeated Czupryna for the second straight year on opening weekend. Calvin took it easy on the old man by benching the Pittsburgh QBs (24 points) and instead going with Buffalo. CJ got most of his points (20 in fact) from Ed McCaffery on Monday night.

CZ was hampered by the ineffectiveness of the SF QBs vs Jacksonville. He did pick up a score Monday night from Miami D to make it a little respectable. With the loss, CZ dips below JK into 10th place among active teams in all time winning percentage.

Best won, but clouds linger on the horizon like Hurricane Floyd. Best's QB Vinny Testeverde went down with a season ending achilles injury. Tom Tupa threw two scores in relief, but neither he or Rick Mirer seem to be able to replace the productive Testaverde. The injury will also effect the numbers of Best first round pick, Keyshawn Johnson who had a great day while carrying the Jets. Best also got a score from Cris Carter. The Jacksonville D put the game out of reach for Stroupe with 21 points in a quagmire vs San Francisco.

Lots of injuries in this game, besides Testeverde, who had to be helped off the field, Stroupes guys were hopping off unassisted. Ricky Williams debut proved to be a little premature as he kept re-injuring is ankle. Rod Smith left the Monday night game early, allowing Ed McCaffery to get all the scores. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored once, but later pulled himself out of the game after getting to the six inch line.

64 WAL TEN Q 25, DLevens 1, EGeorge 6, MHarrison 13, MIrvin 13, JBettis 0, JHall 2 ARZ D 4
42 BUD WAS Q 13, ESmith 7, AFreeman 7, DScott 0, HMoore 0 TBiakabutuka 0, AVinatieri 12, MIN D 3
Wallace bounded out gate quickly this year scoring 64, the most on opening week this year in the league, the most ever for Wallace on opening week and the most points Wallace scored since he rang up 65 in the Super Bowl in 1996. TEN QBs scored 25 points and Michael Irvin and Marvin Harrison each had 13 points.

The defeat was bitter for BUD who had lost to Wallace only once in five years. Rubbing salt in the wounds was the performance of Michael Irvin. Irvin scored only ONE TD last year while he was on BUD's roster. On the plus side, both QBs WAS and DEN were productive with new people at the helm. Stephen Davis and Corey Dillon, although benched by BUD, both scored. Davis twice.

Week 1 Preview

You thought it would never get here...

Two weeks after the draft...after a soggy Sunday where the most perfect thing we could have done was watch football. Except there was none on. Blame it on schedule makers. Not wanting to place playoffs opposite college bowl games, the schedule has been slid back one week, and the week off between the conference championships and the Super Bowl eliminated. The last time the schedule opened this late was 1977, the last year of the 14 game schedule. MOS was in diapers and CZ had all his teeth and the BRFL nine years in the future. In other words a long time ago...

Game of the Week: Mosakowski-Hale vs Jones-Klingman

Notice how the NFL places a good game on Monday night on opening weekend. One that involves a Super Bowl Champ and rival team. Well this is our opening week Monday nighter. In the past, the forum got pretty frothy when these two teams went head to head. As of this writing, it is pretty quiet. Just a couple default line up messages. Is it too early for this game? Maybe we should schedule it after Jones gets his phone bill... Looking at the Mo-ha line up, you'd think Hale was surfing porn the night of the draft.

The angle on this game is Holmgren past and present. JK lines up Green Bay QBs, Mike Holmgren's former team vs his current team, MOS Seattle. The difference is the GB still has Brett Favre. JK

Peil vs Barry

Here is a bit of a bargain basement rivalry. We say basement because that's were these two teams are in the all-time standings.

Injuries, holdout, traded players. The question is, can Dick put 8 on the field. He has Min QB, but Adam has Randy Moss. Moss and several healthy players. AB should win this going away. Dick...check out the new 6PM Sportscenter.

Outlaw vs Talbot

The consensus was that these two teams in the Central had the best drafts. Outlaw made painstaking selections while Talbot peered over Outlaw's shoulder and took who Outlaw didn't want. Both of these guys were primarily responsible for the run on backs in the first couple rounds. Big backs and good second teer QBs.

In most Talbot wins, he gets a strong game from his QB and that is usually enough. Arizona plays at lowly Philly. Talbot should squeeze by in a game that will make a huge difference down the road.

Deitrich vs Wallace

Two teams hoping to rebound after disappointing 1998 campaigns. Two teams that drafted nearly the same. They both took Packers in the first round. Power backs in the second. Quality receivers in the third and shaky backs in the fourth. Both took QBs late, and took another nearly immediately soon after.

So who wins this game of look alikes: Wallace You have to like his Tennessee QB match-up. First game in a new stadium vs team (CIN) they like to hammer.

Czupryna vs Jackson

The Bears/Packers of the BRFL. Our oldest rivalry...dating back to 1986.

CZ must be feeling his age: he stocked his team with three rookie receivers. His hopes are that Torry Holt, Kevin Johnson or Peerless Price all turn out to be "the next Randy Moss". As you recall, it was Jackson who took a flyer on Moss as a rookie in 1998, astonishing the league with a fourth round pick. Moss went onto score an amazing 17 TDs leading the BRFL receivers.

Jackson went conservative this year. Under the steadying hand of Tibu, his draft consultant, Calvin took only who deserved to be picked. He should win this game easily. CZ's QB match-up: SF at JAX doesn't look good. Steve Young almost called it a career two years ago when he came to Florida to open a season. Calvin has Buffalo at Indy. A real point producer the last couple years.

Stroupe vs Best

The other game in the "Wizened West", a division that boasts a half century of BRFL experience, features Best and Stroupe. Usually there's a pumpkin on the porch when these two play. An early season clash is out of character.

Stroupe seems pretty comfortable with Ricky Williams, who is not cleared to play in his opener vs the lowly Panthers. Best on the other hand emerged from the draft with a collection of backs...none of whom was guaranteed a starting job. He did some shopping this week and exchanged two backs for two others that have a better chance of starting. It will be close, but Stroupe should squeak by unless Ricky Williams decides to spend the day watching cartoons that aired 15 years before he was born. "What's up with that?"
