Bud Takes over Central

Is it 1995 again? Deitrich is first place thanks to two quick TDs from Emmitt Smith. It is the third time that Bud has won a game where the deciding points were scored by Emmitt Smith on Monday night. However, he had to hold off a late run by Barry's Randy Moss who also scored twice.

The loss by Barry moves JK into second place in the East thanks to having a better division record than Peil. JK beat up their nemesis Stroupe.

Speaking of having a nemesis, Wallace has one in Best. Best won for the league record 14th time in 19 tries over Wallace. This was the seventh time Best scored over 50 on Wallace. The 12th time he has scored over 40.

The Mo-ha continue their dominence in the central. They waxed West leading Jackson 62-18. Jackson's lead in the West is down to one game.

Outlaw, despite having a solid team, continues to struggle. Peil caught him Monday night thanks to three TDs by Minnesota's QBs. Outlaw still holds points slot in the playoffs. Surprisingly so does Peil, he lost a tie breaker to JK for second regarding division record, but has the second most points.

Father in law knows best, as CZ whipped up on poor Talbot 54-18. Talbot has scored under 20 for the 8th time in 9 games. CZ is making a late run at the playoffs should Best or Jackson falter.

The Premature Playoff Picture

  • 1 Deitrich vs 8 Outlaw
  • 2 Mosakowski_Hale vs 7 Peil
  • 3 Jackson vs 6 Best
  • 4 Wallace vs 5 Jones-Klingman

Division winners get the first three slots. The next group, the three second place teams and the two highest scorers among remaining teams are seated by record. JK, BST and DP are tied. JK wins tiebreaker with Best Best wins with Peil. JK and Peil have not played yet. (but JK has a non-applicable tie breaker over Peil for second in the division).

Jones-Klingman 43 Stroupe 33

JK box score STP box score
Another sub-par game from Favre, another JK loss? Not this time! Olandis Gary scored 13 points and for the third straight week, JK special Reserved a hot defense. This week it was Denver. JK has netted 32 points the last three weeks from SR'ing defenses. However, the best news of the week was the return of Joey Galloway. Galloway is ending a season long hold-out Monday. JK had drafted but later cut Galloway. They were fortunate enough to claim him before others got word.

Not only did Stroupe lose this game, but he slipped 10 points behind Peil in the points race. The points race is practically all that is left for 1-8 Stroupe. He is 4 games and a tie breaker behind Best for the race for second.

Best 58 Wallace 23

BST box score - WAL box score
Best matched his season high of 58 points. His QB, Carolina, threw three TDs. Antowain Smith scored twice. Best started Smith despite having a bad week 8 (5 yards). Smith has had a tendancy to bounce back after a bad game with a score the following week, and Best had been burned twice by that this year. Keyshawn Johnson and Cris Carter also scored: the first time since week 1, when Best also scored 58 points.

Wallace's 23 points was his worst score this year. Tennessee was shut out, so that negated Steve McNair and Eddie George. Errict Rhett scored twice, as did Jerome Bettis, but Wallace missed the Bus, benching him in favor of Rhett, Levens and George. Even Olindo Mare had a down game, failing to get double figures in points for the first time since week 1.

Czupryna 54 Talbot 18

CZ box score - TAL box score
If you see some one rummaging through your trash, it might be CZ. It is not that he's hard up after retirement, but he is have some success with other team's discards, namely Seattle QBs that the Moha tossed a aside. The Mo-ha had one QB throwing three a game, why do they need another. Seattle alone matched Talbot's score. Although Talbot was aboard that train for a while as Ricky Watters scored twice. CZ also go some milage out of former flavors of the week Germane Crowell and Az Hakim. A lesson to those standing pat at the bottom: 35 of CZ's points came from in-season aquisitions.

Speaking of those at the bottom and standing pat, Talbot turned in his usual sub 20 week. Although the Giants were on a bye, Talbot must have felt that he starting them as Arizona started for Giant Dave Brown and played in the Meadowlands. Talbot also started Robert Smith, who is still in street clothes.

Peil 48 Outlaw 40 DP box score - OUT box score

Peil rallied Monday night thanks to three TDs from Jeff George. The upset of Outlaw lifts Peil to 4-3-2 and most importantly, into a points slot in the playoffs. Where incidently he joins Outlaw. Interesting to note that both Peil and Outlaw have made exactly one permanent roster change this season.

For Outlaw, a chance to possibly gain on the his mates in the Central was blown as he now slips three games behind them. Despite the loss, Outlaw has to be feeling good with his team and virtually all his starters may have an upside. One exception may be Jerry Rice is suddenly seems very old. Despite the divsion gap, Outlaw leads the points race among not slotted playoff teams by 49.

Deitrich 49 Barry 45

BUD box score - AB box score
Bud won this shootout to learn first place in the Central after Wallace lost. He needed two scores from Emmitt Smith to do it. He has won three games on Monday night with Smith providing the winning points. However, a broken hand may sideline Smith for the rest of the BRFL regular season. He will have to rely more on his "Washington Triplets". Was QBs, Steven Davis and Brad Johnson each scored this week. For AB, he finally got impressive production from Randy Moss and Jacksonvilles QBs. However, it was not enough and a loss drops AB into last place in the East. A division he was leading two weeks ago.

Mosakowski-Hale 62 Jackson 18

MOS box score - CJ box score
Facing Jackson Buffalo QBs, the Mo-ha didn't know whether to start Eric Moulds. It was a gametime decsion for Moulds, and he was given the go, but the Mo-ha left him on the bench. Moulds scored, but it really didn't matter. St Louis got him three TDs and change and Muhsin Muhhammad scored twice. The surprisingly easy win kept the Mo-ha on top of the East division which remains tight with all teams .500 or better and separated by two games.

For Jackson, the shellacking allowed Best to creep a game closer in the division, and means that a certain "tightness" sets in. Questions abound about some key players. Terrell Owens returns to an offense that is totally in the tank. Curtis Martin is getting carries and yards but no scores. Terrance Mathis has been only a second option is recent weeks and Leroy Hoard, now the starter, has seen his goal line opportunities diminish as the Vikings, under Jeff George, tend to throw the ball when at the goal line.

Week 9 Preview

One long time member of the league, who shall remain nameless, was giving me a hard time about the picks. So, I was 2-4 last week and got his game wrong. I was hot early in the year and have been cooling off some. 27-19-2 for the season... Hey that's better than the Swami and Hank Goldberg.

Mosakowski-Hale vs Jackson

The lead in the East division is a revolving door. This week, it is the Mo-ha. Jackson still leads the west. St Louis lost their first game to Tennessee. This week they travel to Detroit, an emerging team with a decent defense. They don't have Eric Moulds to counter Jackson's Buffalo attack. Buffalo has had some offensive issues in the past few weeks, but this week, should work them out against Washington. Everyone else does. Terrell Owens returns. I'm picking Jackson in a mild upset.

Jones-Klingman vs Stroupe

Opponents have been averaging 48.5 points game against Stroupe. At this pace, he would eclipse Talbot's record of 733 points given up in a season. Talbot did it n 16 games last year. One would think that 1-7 Stroupe wouldn't have a chance to go 16 games, but think again. Stroupe is currently the second points qualifier.

That fact must horrify JK. Probably almost as much as rumors of Steve Logan replacing Carl Torbush at UNC. Three weeks ago, they were 4-1 and kings of the East and now they are looking up at bitter rival Stroupe.

Stroupe can score, but everyone else seems to have their best game aginst him, even Best. Twice teams have scored 70 on him. A possibility exists this week. Whenever Brett Favre has a lousy game, he comes back the next week and lights it up. This week he has lets see... The Bears at home. Prediction: JK

Peil vs Outlaw

Last week, Outlaw showed us what he is capable of with 72 points. He would of had more if he Edgerrin James hadn't of fumbled into the endzone. This week, his QB, New England is on a bye, but the rest of his team is solid. Peil is just the opposite, his QB is solid, but the rest of his team isn't. His best player, Tim Brown, is on a bye. Outlaw to win.

Barry vs Deitrich

Wallace's loss last week means that Bud is a half game out of first place. Washington should put up some numbers this week, but not as much as last week.

AB left his lineup on the forum a week ago before week 8. It includes Derek Loville in week 9, but he should have started him in week 8. Loville's score would have earned AB a tie in week 8. Loville is injured this week. AB mentioned consuming rum-flavored drinks. He won't be consuming Bud this week.

Talbot vs Czupryna

The "Family Feud". These teams are so bad this year, it is a wonder if either is capable of winning this week. Talbot switched to the Giants QBs, and they are on a bye, so it is back to Arizona. Yet, it just sort of seems like they are the Giants. Dave Brown is the starter and they are playing in Giants stadium this week.

The old man got a pleasant surprise when his newly acquired Seattle QBs outplayed Green Bay and CZ got a win. Now, does CZ stay with the hot hand? He has to worry about the post Monday night letdown for Seattle, but they play the Bengals. Who could have a let down against the Bengals. Father-in-law knows best. CZ

Wallace vs Best

The 19th meeting between these two teams. Best has won 13 of these meetings. One trend in Wallace's history is taht he rarely takes one loss and moves on. Another thing to notice. Best could be having a terrible year, but he almost always beats Wallace. However, taht is fantasy. This is really. Wallace is good, and a lot better than Best. Depite the setback he is scoring points, Best is not. Wallace to buck the trend.
