Mo-Ha Leaves Fifty on the Pine
As Outlaw Gets Revenge

Last years the Seattle D set a record for defensive team scoring with 130 points. They were a member of the Mosakowski-Hale's championship team. A fact not overlooked by Outlaw, the team Mo-ha defeated in Super Bowl. Outlaw drafted the Seattle D and started them this week against their old owners. The results were instantaneous as the Sea D had 14 points just minutes into the game. 14 was the same number of points that Mo-ha's entire starting team could manage all weekend.

Now if Mo-ha had used a different starting line-up...

His regular kicker, Seattle's Todd Petersen, another alum of the 98 champs ended up outscoring the Seattle D 19-18. If you thought maybe Mo-ha had some aversion to using Seattle this week, think again. He started their QB. They netted zip. Had he started St Louis, his other Qb and another alum of the 98 champs, he would have added 24 more points.

  • Outlaw 40 Mosakowski-Hale 22
  • Jones Klingman 27 Talbot 18
  • Best 36 Peil 27
  • Stroupe 35 Barry 30
  • Deitrich 45 Czupryna 36
  • Wallace 34 Jackson 30

Call all claims into Jackson only since I'm out of the country.
45 BUD
36 CZ
The incredible Stephen Davis continued his torrid pace, scoring three more touchdowns as Bud's big back attack grounded CZ 45-36. Emmitt Smith was off, but bye week fill in Tim Biakabutuka scored on two long TD runs to net 15 points. Two sleeper backs emerging on one team is a incredible and more than offsets the relative non-production of his premier receivers, Antonio Freeman and the injured Herman Moore. Bud's history of late dictates that big name receivers on his team seem have off years: evidence Michael Irvin, Tony Martin and Rob Moore in recents seasons.

"CZ never stands pat", says Calvin and he is right. The old man won the Tyrone Wheatley derby last week and plugged in the journeyman back and got instant results. Perhaps if it wasn't for Steve Young's concussion Monday night, CZ might have overtaken Bud. Local fave rookie Torry Holt has been a pleasant surprise with two TDs in each of his games. Many of the league's Holt lovers cry: "play him or trade him to me"!

40 OUT
22 MOS
If you have a dog and happening to be playing the Mo-ha, have him sniff them. Dogs can detect fear. It appears the mo-ha is leaking fear. Another loss, it might be panic....Check out this Splinter squad:
  • Todd Petersen: Benching your trusted kicker who scores 19 points
  • STL QB: Picking up a hot QB, and not starting him. 24 points
Perhaps it is time unplug Hale. I don't know where he is downloading this advice, but it is beyond awful. Bring back the beach boy MOS. Pick up Will Blackwell, trade Terrell to Peil for Min Q. Get SEA D from Outlaw. Bring back '98!

Outlaw is 2-1 despite what looked like a brutal schedule to start the season, but Talbot and the Mo-ha are shadows of their former selves. Next up is up and down Best, who is scheduled to be down.

35 STP
30 AB
A fate worse than splinter squad: You have a player that you had been starting that has turned out to be unproductive, so you cut him. That very week, there he is on Monday night football, scoring on a spectacluar TD that would have given you a win this week. Such was the fate with AB and Lawerence Phillips. That was the bad news, the good new is that Phillips can be easily obtained by winless AB on Tuesday if he wants him back.

Place Peyton Manning on the all fantasy breakout team. He is having a sensational start to 1999. It was hard to determine how he would go this season, even though he has a great finish last year. Sophomore slumps have burned many a BRFL owner in the past. If some other players, such as Ricky Williams, step up, Stroupe could be a force in a division that is shaping up to be very tight.

Best freaked out Sunday when NYJ/Combo TD was overturned by official's reversal. It was the kind that was not challenged, but ordered by the officials in the booth that have the power to do that in the last two minutes of the game. The TD almost qualified as "mop-up", but was reversed anyway. Without the easy 12, Best had to rely again on a Defensive points from Jacksonville later to seal the win. Twice this season, JAX D has won a game for him playing in a late, rainy game at home.

Peil appears to have enough deadwood to sustain him through a cold winter. He did get a productive game from Tim "I only score against Best" Brown. Maybe the Vikings will come around. It is hard to believe that a team that averaged 34 points last season, has not scored over 20 this season.

JK
34 WAL
30 CJ
Did a sense of panic cross Wallace's mind when both Joe Nedney and Chris Jacke lined up for the kickoff Monday Night? With the scored tied with CJ, if Nedney was the kicker, Wallace would not be able to pull off a win. Fortunately, it was the toe of SR Chris Jacke behind all of Arizona's kicker points and with CJ's Terrell Owens in check all night, Wallace was able to pull out a win.

Now that he has lost a game, I guess we can expect Calvin to open it up transaction-wise. It has been a quiet year so far. Guarantee, he won't tolerate a slide into complacency as his divison-mates will also be constantly tinkering.

Week 3 Preview

Week 3, and the BRFL moves outside the division. There will be a lot of huffing and puffing about which division is the strongest. I think it is the central. Wallace, Outlaw and Deitrich looked very strong to open the season. The odd man out is Talbot: "Mr November", as he always starts slow and finishes strong.

Week 3 is also the beginning of the NFL three team bye weeks. Dallas, New Orleans and Miami are off. None of those QBs are starters.

Scorecard: 4-2 last week. 7-4-1 for the season.

NFL Schedule Week 3

Mosakowski-Hale(1-1) vs Outlaw (1-1)

Interesting that these two teams should meet this week. Both lost games in which they scored 46 points. Mo-Ha lost to JK 49-46 in week 1 and Outlaw lost to Bud 58-46 last week. Both teams are playing in the shadow of a 2-0 team in their division and are looking for a little respect. In addition to that, this is a rematch of last years Super Bowl, won by the Mo-ha 35-23.

Outlaw looks a really good this week. His QBs, New England, are home against the Giants, a team that gave up 50 points last week. New England has a tendancy to start the season hot, and that will continue this week. Mo-ha gets John Kitna back, but Seattle is on the road vs Pittsburgh. Their two best backs, Terrell Davis (@TB) and Duce Staley (@BUF) are on the road vs teams who's "D" did not give up a touchdown last week. Jerry Rice plays on Monday night football. Can you recall a Monday night where Rice didn't score?

Outlaw exacts his revenge this week and does it by a large margin.

Jones-Klingman (2-0) vs Talbot (0-2)

Talbot is not just a sleeping giant. He is a cryologically frozen giant. He is 0-2 and has scored just 25 points this year. It is the worst start in BRFL history. One other is comparable. Wallace, 0-2 and 26 points, in 1993. That's right 1993, his first championship season. Wallace climbed out of it by working the waiver wire, something Talbot failed to due after first round pick Jamal Anderson went down.

Jones-Klingman is a shaky 2-0, especially after notching the lowest winning score in 5 years when they won over AB 16-12 last week. I may be going out on a limb here, but this is Talbot's breakout week. Talbot owns JK. He has won 7 of the last 9. He'll win again this week. Upset Special.

Peil (0-1-1) vs Best (1-1)

After the stinking up the joint with an 8 point week, Best is ready to break out. All his match ups look more favorable this week. Even the Rick Mirer led Jets face Washington at home. That has shootout potential. Peil counters with the Vikings at Green Bay where the Vikes had a huge game last year. However, that also figures into Best's plans with Cris Carter and Gary Anderson. The guess here is that Best wins and makes up for the being behind the eight ball last week.

Barry (0-1-1) vs Stroupe (0-2)

Stroupe doesn't have to worry about Ricky Williams injury woes this week. He has a bye. Indianapolis plays at San Diego, Tough D there. It's so wrong for Stroupe on so many levels.

AB has added Bam Morris to his "Chain Gang" and paroled Lawrence Phillips. He also has Randy Moss returning to the scene of the crime...Green Bay, where he had a monster game last year. His goody two shoes QB, Jacksonville, plays at home against Tennessee. AB has one of those jailbreak weeks.

Deitrich (1-1) vs Czupryna (1-1)

Although, both teams are 1-1, CZ will have to juice up his pacemaker to hang with Bud and his Redskins. Bud is down Emmitt Smith this week, but that should not hold him back as Corey Dillon is due a big game vs the Panthers.

The 49'ers are on Monday Night Football, so there will be a lot of talk about the aging Steve Young and whether or not be can take the pounding. The guess here is that he will get pounded and so will CZ. Bud will win big.

Wallace (2-0) vs Jackson (2-0)

Here is a BRFL classic: Wallace vs Jackson. Wallace leads this ten year old series 8-6-1 including a Super Bowl win. This year both teams are 2-0 and leading their respective divisions. That is itself is unusual, as this is the first time that Wallace and Jackson have played in separate divisions. This season Wallace has shot out of the chute dominating by averaging 65 points a game. Jackson is averaging 38 points a game, the league average. Wallace has the leading QB in the league in Tennessee, but injuries and a tough game may force him to look else where. Jackson has been alternating between Pittsburgh and Buffalo. I suspect he starts Buffalo this week.

In this history of this series, Wallace seems to win all the higher profile games. This week is high profile since they are both 2-0. After two down years, Wallace is back. I think he stays on top this week, but it will be close: Wallace in a squeaker.
