1999 BRFL Week 15 Results

Top Four Seeds Advance to Final Four

For the second straight year and for the third time in four years, the final four teams were the top four seeds. Best, Mo-ha and Deitrich held their leads on Monday night and joined top seed Wallace in the final four.

Wallace 46 Outlaw 36

OUT box score - WAL box score

Wallace is moving on the the Final Four for the sixth time, and for the third time in four years.

Baltimore QBs scored 3 TDs including one to Priest Holmes as late season pick-ups continue to contribute to Wallace's playoff run. Successful late season acquistions continue to be a Wallace trademark. Once again, he is known as "Mr December".

Outlaw (6-9) ends his season despite a good game from Edgerrin James. James is the likely BRFL "Rookie of the Year". It was inconsistent QB play that doomed Outlaw, who many thought had the best draft of anyone.

Wallace (11-3-1) takes on division rival Deitrich (11-4) for a shot at the Super Bowl.

Best 45 Peil 32

BST box score - DP box score

Best is advancing to his seventh final four, but his first since 1996.

Best lead Peil 39-12 going into Monday night. He added six points from Gary Anderson while Peil attempted to rally with two Viking passing TDs and a fake field Goal from Green Bay's D. Best built is cushion with 32 of his points on Saturday fron Carolina QBs (25) and Charlie Garner (7). Jonathan Linton added a score Sunday night. Peil also had a score from Tim Brown and Mike Hollis had 6.

With the win, Best becomes the second BRFL team to win 100 games. It met his goal of hitting the century by the end of the century. The only other "Century Club" member is Jackson, who reached it in 1998.

Mosakowski-Hale 56 Jones Klingman 45

MOS box score - JK box score

The Moha are going to their third final four in four years. Perhaps the talk about how they haven't paid their dues will end. The defending champs won an ugly division, but came up big when they had to. Credit also goes to which one of them remembered to start Mushin Muhammad on Saturday. His 19 points made the difference after JK had scored 22 with Gonzales and the KC defense in the early game.

Fake Field Goal TDs, a rarity in the NFL had an impact for both of these teams. Dallas pulled off a fake, with Davis LaFleur running it in for a score. The Mo-ha were credited with a special teams TD. Green Bay's fake field goal netted points for JK. Although JK does not own the Green Bay D, he does own the Green Bay QBs. Matt Hasselbeck, the holder, threw a TD pass. Hasselbeck is the back up QB. Points are credited to the Green Bay QBs. Interestingly, those were the only points a Green Bay QB scored Monday.

For JK this is the sixth straight playoff loss for JK. They are 1-7 in their playoff history. They have never played in week 16.

Next up for the Mo-Ha (9-6) is Best (10-5).

Deitrich 30 Jackson 27

BUD box score - CJ box score

The least experienced of the final four teams is Deitrich. He is advancing to his second final four. His first was in 1995.

It's Christmas and Bud must be in a charitable mood. He game the day off to Emmitt Smith (7), Albert Connell (6) and incredibly, Marcus Robinson (20). That trio of usual starters would have salted this game away, but instead Bud found himself sweating out Leroy Hoard. Hoard scored once and was stopped on on the goal another time.

For Jackson the great season he had came crashing down in two short weeks. During the year, he made brilliant and timely moves. Luck was also on his side, but in week 14 he scored 8 in a loss to Best. In week 15, when Bud's boners left the game for the taking, Calvin didn't seize the opportunity. Had he submitted an early lineup, it might have included newly acquired Patrick Jeffers who played and scored on Saturday. There's nothing more painful in this league than exiting the playoffs with Splinter Squad.

Bud will play Wallace in week 16. Ironically, it might have been Outlaw facing Wallace... In week 12, Wallace special reserved a kicker and a defense on Wednesday night (Thursday was Thanksgiving) Bud was the only person who noticed the early SR, but did not report it. He raised it as an issue two weeks later. Had something been done about the early SR, Bud would have won the game, the division, become the top seed, but would have LOST in week 15. So here is his chance for to make Wallace play for his breaking the rules.

Week 15 Preview

Division Rivals Spice
Elite Eight Matchups

Wallace and Outlaw are pretty familar with each other: they will be playing their third game against each other in five weeks. Although they have been in the league together 10 years, they've never played each other more than once in a season until now. From scrambled East division come JK and Mo-ha. Both BRFL tag teams have been waging a season long war in the forum, and actual game between them might be anti-climatic.

Best/Peil and Deitrich/Jackson are not division match-ups, but they are familiar post season opponents, having each played twice before.

With the late start to the NFL season the season reaches Christmas in the fifteenth week, many teams are in "give up" mode while elite teams still have something to play for. Given that their will be lot of laying down, scores may be fairly high this week.

3-3 last week to finish the regular season 48-34-2.

1 Wallace (10-3-1) vs 8 Outlaw (6-8)

Series: Wallace leads Series 6-5
Playoffs: First Meeting
1999: 99 wk 11 Outlaw 59 Wallace 40
99 wk 14 Wallace 59 Outlaw 38

These two scored nearly one hundred points combined in their two meetings this year. It could happen again this week. After showing some promise in mid-season, Outlaw faded down the stretch - much like his QB team, New England. Outlaw thinks he has a good match-up in New England at Philly, but it is a meaningless game in Philly in Decemeber. Is their sufficient motivation there?

Meanwhile, Wallace has found a real gem in Baltimore QBs. Seven TDs in two weeks. This week they get the lowly Saints at home. Although JK thwarted Wallace's designs in owning both the Ismail brothers, Baltimore should provide him with enough offense. Eddie George should have a field day against the Falcons.

2 Best (9-5) vs 7 Peil (6-6-2)

Series: Best Leads Series 7-5
Playoffs: Series Tied 1-1
1999: 99 wk 3 Best 36 Peil 27

Perhaps these two should take Sunday off. Best has his QB, Carolina, going on Saturday. Peil has his, Minnesota, going on Monday. Both are paired up and should put up good numbers. The difference though is Best has a piece of Peil's action in that he has Vikes kicker Gary Anderson. He would have a huge piece of the action if Cris Carter were healthy. Still, it should be enough to beat Peil. Best to move on.

3 Mo-ha (8-6) vs 6 Jones-Klingman (7-7)

Series: Mo-ha leads Series 4-2
Playoffs: First Meeting
1999: 99 wk 1 Jones-Klingman 49 Mosakowski-Hale 46
99 wk 12 Mosakowski-Hale 31 Jones-Klingman 29

This is a familar path for JK, finish second in their division, earn the sixth seed, play the third seed, the first place team in the same division. Last year, this meant a quick exit to Outlaw. What will this year bring?

Mo-ha's been bragging about winning three straight first place finishes. Granted, leading the league in 1997 and having the best record in 1998 are impressive, but is champion of lowly East division something to be proud of? What the heck, it pays the bill.

However, the euphoria may be short lived. JK will be loading up on Packers who face the generous Viking pass "D". Mo-ha's main concern: is it rest time for Kurt Warner? Issac Bruce, now that the Rams are locking up home field. JK to pull the week's upset.

4 Deitrich (10-4) vs 5 Jackson (9-5)

Series: Jackson leads Series 7-2
Playoffs: Jackson Leads Series 2-0
1999: 99 wk 5 Jackson 41 Deitrich 32

Until last week, Jackson looked like one of the league's elite teams, but after not scoring a TD against Best in the division title game last week, he looks very vulnerable. His potentially most productive QB, Cincinnati is on a bye. He'll face Bud with two QB teams, Tampa and Chicago, who start rookies.

Bud counters with Washington QBs, something he didn't have is week 5 loss to Jackson. His backfield is suspect. The leading scoring back, Stephen Davis is there, but Corey Dillon is on abye and Emmitt Smith and Tim Biakabutuka are hurting.

Jackson has twice ended Bud's season, but he won't here. Bud should win this low scoring affair.
