Mint

Perennial

There are over 400 varieties of mint, but the most well-know are probably spearmint and peppermint. Spearmint is used to flavour candies, medicine (cough syrups), mouthwash, breath mints and chewing gum and many more things. Peppermint is the source of menthol (like in Creme de Menthe).

Other important varieties of mint include Pennyroyal, which is a low-growing plant used to keep fleas and mosquitos away, and Corsican mint, which is used as a ground covering plant and has very tiny leaves.

Some other varieties that taste just like they sound, include: pineapple mint, orange mint, apple mint, chocolate mint and candy mint.

Mint is also used as an edible garnish as well as a flavouring for sauces, desserts, drinks, fruit salads, and vegetables such as potatoes, peas, carrots and beans. Mint sauce traditionally accompanies roast lamb.
