Welcome to my Canary page!!
Basics
Canaries are calm and soothing to listen to. They are active which makes them fun to watch as
well. Canaries really have a variety of colors. My favorite is red frosted but, I’m sure that
everyone has a different opinion and their color doesn’t make them a better pet. The only
real problem with them is that there is no real way of knowing the girls from the boys.
People will tell you that boys sing and girls don’t, but, there are exceptions to the rule
depending on surroundings. Most boys won’t sing when they are with a girl. And
sometimes girls sing. One true test is if they lay an egg then they are a girl. But not all
girls lay eggs. So, all I have to say is good luck. The best situation would be a huge aviary
with a bunch of them in there. But then you don’t know what you are going to end up with.
Most commercailly bred canaries are in small indiviual cages.
Breeding
Canaries are not as easy as finches to breed, even when you have a pair. First you need
to try and be at the right time of the year. Valentine’s day is when the canaries traditionally
pick their mates for the year, or a t least that’s what somone told me. You need to give them
a nest of some sort, you can buy one at a feed store or make your own. The green strawberry
baskets will work! If you are breeding in a cage with more then one pair then you need to
provide extra nests. For every two pairs of birds you need to put up at least three nests.
Once the birds make a nest and lay their eggs they will need to incubate for about fourteen
days. Then the babies will start to hatch. You need to provide the parents with proper food
for the babies. Most bird books will give you a variety of recipes to use. The babies will be
ready to leave the nest in another fourteen days. I think that it is best to leave the nest alone
as much as possible after the babies hatch.
