* nasal retentive orchestra: fric out!
(2001, cd, fr, pickaboo nro 001) - incl.various frank zappa
coverversions
all the way from france comes the nasal retentive orchestra's "fric out" and
as the title suggests, there's lots of zappa on this one.
1. the heavy poodle (zappa)
2. dirty love (zappa)
3. king kong prélude (zappa)
4. i'm the slime (zappa)
5. the quizz (delbrouck)
6. king kong variations (zappa)
7. cosmik debris (zappa)
8. yellow snow (zappa)
9. water turn black (zappa)
10. shanxi part one (delbrouck)
11. interview
12. weasels variations (delbrouck)
13. black napkins (zappa)
14. our traditional meeting (delbrouck)
15. the greatest sinner (zappa)
the pieces written by christophe delbrouck (bass & backing vocals) are
stories or discussions (in french), exept for 'shanxi' and 'weasels
variations'. the first one is a very nice little piece that he even might
have called 'shanxi from hell' :-).
the nasal retentive orchestra sounds great. especially mathieu metzger (sax
& flutes) and jean-pierre vignaud (guitar) add a lot of extras. in short, a
great band playing great music. you can tell that they had a lot of fun
playing it. "fric out" is a very fine sounding, very entertaining album:
essential listening !
you can find more info on this french septet (and their album) on
www.multimania.com/fdi. getting hold of
their album is not the easiest thing, but it is well worth the effort. (and
maybe the euro will make this a bit easier)
* zappatistas: live in leeds
(2001, cd, uk, jazzprint jpvp122cd) - all zappa coverversions
the zappatistas were put together by john etheridge (guitarist of soft
machine !!) and steve lodder at the end of 1998 for a festival in newark,
uk, as a one-off thing. they enjoyed it so much that they gave some extra
concerts and that they wanted to release an album of the 1999/11 concert
they did in leeds. one year later, they got plugged on the famous 'jazz
notes" bbc radio show (2000/02/17), and now, finally, here it is: the
zappatistas' "live in leeds".
1. harry you're a beast / oh no / theme from lumpy gravy
(medley)
2. eat that question
3. sexual harassment in the workplace
4. king kong
5. big swifty
6. let's make the water turn black
7. sofa no.1
8. i'm the slime
9. grand wazoo
i was talking to a soft machine fan the other day, and he told me how he
likes zappa's "hot rats", "waka jawaka" and "grand wazoo" albums. well, i
guess the link is made clear on this fabulous album.
john etheridge's web site offers some tracks that are not on this album:
'peaches en regalia' and 'mr.green genes'. haven't heard them yet.
i'm still looking for a recording of the "jazz notes bbc show" as well as an
audio copy of the tracks from john etheridge's web-site. if anyone can
help me out, let me know.
but in the meantime, buy this album and dance to it !
* captain beefheart & his magic band: grow fins vol.III: grow
fins
(2001, 2lp, usa, xeric xer-lp-96)
the final part of the grow fins vinyl package. this one has the complete
fifth cd from the box edition.
* the meridian arts ensemble: 1994/03/06 concert den bosch, nl
(cdr)
not an official release this one, just a very fine concert that has been
circulating on tape in the trade-circuit for a while. this concert was
originally broadcasted on dutch radio and someone has been smart enough to
transfer his quality copy to cdr. good job. sounds excellent.
among other compositions, this concert also included frank zappa's 'oh no',
'igor's boogie', 'eat that question', 'echidna's arf', 'let's make the water
turn black', 'harry, you're a beast', ''t mershi duween', 'dupree's
paradise', 'peaches en regalia' and 'big swifty'.
* zita swoon: 2001/12/01 tv-broadcast "plankenkoorts",
belgian tv
(cdr)
a couple of weeks ago belgian national television (vrt 2, canvas) aired a
show zita swoon did in april in schaarbeek, belgium, earlier this year.
short bits: shuggie otis's "inspiration information" album from 1974, has
been re-released on cd.
that's all for now,
