Lieutenant Malcolm Reed armory officer, starship Enterprise Human Malcolm Reed is a European assigned to the Enterprise as the ship's armory officer, in charge of weapons and defense systems. Reed also introduced the ship to the newest form of technology with the phase pistols. He also runs the transporter although he doesn't trust it enough to use on living beings unless absolutely necessary. Reed has been able to learn about new types of weaponry and has also had the opportunity to build some of the weapons for the Enterprise. He had to supervise the construction of phase cannons which were not installed before the ship left earth. He also had the opportunity to learn about alien vessels, including Klingons and their photon torpedoes. Reed is the most mysterious member of the crew, and even Archer had a hard time coming up with a gift for his birthday. Malcolm's parents explained to Archer that their son pretty much took whatever was given to him and didn't really express what he liked or didn't like.
