Gordon's stays sparkling clear

The big little man did it again.

After powering Gordon's Gin to that great escape win over San Miguel Beer last Sunday, diminutive Bal David erupted for 17 of his 25 points in the final quarter including nine straight in a 21-2 run as the Boars turned back Pop Cola, 111-97, to remain the only unbeaten team in the PBA All-Filipino Cup to the cheers of the predominantly Gordon's Gin crowd at the Cuneta Astrodome.

And as the Boars stayed sparkling clear of any impurities with their best start of three straight wins, Pure Foods barged into the winners' circle with an 88-63 spanking of defending champion Alaska Milk in the opener.

"They say winning your first game is always the hardest," exclaimed rookie Pure Foods coach Eric Altamirano in the aftermath of his first victory in three games. "But as they also say, there is always a first time. I just have to give it to the boys and the One up there."

Making the most out of the absence of ailing Milkman Bong Hawkins who is nursing a bad case of tonsilitis, the Cowboys cut loose with 28 points in the third quarter while limiting the Milkmen to only nine in a defensive statement.

The Milkmen's 63- point output tied the fifth all-time lowest in league history and was the franchise's all-time lowest. Their previous low-water mark was 68.

Down, 68-79, early in the final period, the Boars banked on that 21-2 run to move ahead, 90-83 going into the last five minutes.

Another 16-4 blast, sparked by a Pido Jarencio trey and two successive baskets by the 5-foot-9 David erased whatever hopes the Bottlers had in salvaging a win.

But Gordon's coach Sonny Jaworski felt they haven't done enough yet.

"What's three wins compared to the other games we still have to play," he said. "We must still improve on a lot of other things."

Gordon's 111 points was a season high and so were its 61-point second half production and fourth quarter output of 43 points. -MANNY ANGELES
