[2] Getting parts
[2.0] I want ... How do I request it?

You DON'T! This is NOT ABWI and does not work the same (ie. blind requests). Consider this group a place where people offer CDs that you can decide to grab if they interest you, rather than a place where you can ask for specific ones.

The time, effort, and computing resources required to post complete CD images in the manner this group has chosen makes the process unsuitable to spontaneous "what the heck, I've that lying around" posts. Most people will delete the parts shortly after burning the CD and the posters will likely delete their copies shortly after the Repost.

If you need another way of looking at this group, please feel free to stop by the ABCDI Restaurant and peruse the menu, courtesy of our very own, inimitable Bugs Bunny®. While humorous, it is also quite accurate. Bon apetit!

[2.1] What if I missed a few days/came in halfway through/subscribe to a worthless server and want to get the other parts, should I make a request for the parts?

If the CD image is still being uploaded for the first time Or does not have REPOST in the header, then absolutely not! All pertinent information regarding the post should/will be summarized in an .NFO or 0/x file. Read it! Do not request parts (see 2.2 below) until after the repost. Posting messages to the NG may or may not get read/flamed, increase the general noise in the group, and have a global audience.

Here are some alternatives:

  1. The majority of users in the NG are accomplished veterans and have means of communications outside the NG. Use them wherever appropriate.
  2. You need a file. Johnny Warez has it but needs one you have. You can FTP, ICQ, IRC them or be patient and wait for a repost by the original poster. Trading is also encouraged in parts. By using these alternative means you can acquire the file, keep down the clutter and save server bandwidth, and maybe make some good contacts. (Please do NOT post parts of someone else's post in ABCDI. IF the poster wants help they will ask.)

Please Note: Multiple requests invariably get ignored/flamed (eg. more than one request in a 24 hour time frame).

The overall goal is to stop the group from being abused and filled with the garbage that has polluted other NGs. If you still can't get the parts you need and the post is over, then noone wants to hear your excuses and complaints. This is a quick and easy way to get flamed long and hard. No one owes anyone any favors-- this stuff is free.

[2.2] The posts expire before I can get them all. Is it OK to ask for a repost?

No, it is not polite to ask for a repost before the poster has done a complete repost. After that repost, any parts requests should be taken to parts, where they will have the greatest chance of being met.

[2.3] The CD that I want has already been posted. I really want this image will it be posted again, and if so when?

No, once an Image has been posted and then reposted in ABCDI it should not be seen there again until a new version is released. You can, however, ask if anyone has it (in the discussion or parts groups,) and seek to obtain it privately- by ftp or whatever other arrangements you can make.
