JOHN THOMAS SCHOFIELD 1854-1918
AND HIS DESCENDANTS

John Thomas was born in
1854 in Mossley.
He married Mary Hinchliffe on the 24th January, 1876 at St Michael and All
Angels Church in Ashton-under-Lyne.

Marriage Certificate
In 1881 they were living at 17 Vernon Street,
Mossley.
John and Mary both worked in the cotton mills, he was a grinder and she was
a tenter.
By 1891 they had moved to a four room house on Back Percy Street, Mossley
and in
1901 they were living on Percy Street, Mossley.
John Thomas was known to have a temper whilst Mary was a very gentle person.

John Thomas and Mary had nine children, all
born in Mossley:
Elizabeth Ann
was born in 1876.
She married Sam Booth and they had a daughter, Alice, who died by drowning
aged 4 years.
After Sam's death, she married his brother Fred Booth and they had a
daughter, Doris.

Grace
was born in 1880.
She married James Alphonso Cooke at St Michael and All Angels Church,
Ashton-under-Lyne in 1901.
James was supposed to have been murdered near the barracks in
Ashton-under-Lyne. However there is nothing to verify
this on his death certificate, in fact it says he died in hospital of
natural causes.
Grace later married John William Goddard in a civil ceremony at
Ashton-under-Lyne.
They had sons Lees and George plus another son who drowned in the " Blue
Lagoon ", Stalybridge aged 4 years.

Sophia
was born in 1881.
She had five children whilst unmarried and they all had different fathers -
Eva, Percy, Lily, Harold and Clifford.
In later life she married Herbert Longsden.

born in 1891 and died in 1893

Lees
was born in 1892.
He was killed in active service during WW1 whilst serving in France.
On his memorial, his first initial is stated as "A" and not "L".

Joseph Milton
was born in 1895.
He married Elizabeth McBride Stewart at St Johns Church, Roughtown, Mossley
in 1819 .
They had three children.
CHILDREN OF JOSEPH MILTON AND ELIZABETH

Mary Louise
Sydney. He was born on 28 December 1930 and at that time the family lived at
51 Rodney Street, Mossley.
After his mother's death, Sydney moved with his father to 9 Back Stamford
Road, Mossley.
Sydney attended Milton Council School and Ashton Technical School, on
leaving he worked initially delivering post in Mossley
and then was promoted to a telegraph messenger.
He was a member of Abney Congregational Church and Boys Brigade.
Sydney married Margaret Lindsey on 19 March 1955 and they have three
children and six grandchildren.

Mary died November 1925.
They are buried at Mossley Cemetery, Grave number 2100.
