John, the sixth child and
fourth son of John and Grace, was baptised on the 5th September, 1779 at St
Peter's Church, Hope.
In 1803 as a young man aged 24 years and along with his brother Benjamin
Hallowes, John volunteered under the
General Defence Act within the township of Hope, to be available to defend
his country if the threatened invasion of
Napolean occurred.
At that time John was a weaver and he was unmarried.
On the 1st January, 1807 John married Betty Eyre at St Peter's Church, Hope.
Betty came from a farming family and it is believed that on their marriage,
they were given land at Aston, Hope of their
own to farm. John prospered well as a farmer and eventually was quite
wealthy in terms of property and land.
