Samuel was born at 11.40am on the 15th
October, 1872 at 5 Shepley Street, Stalybridge.
He was twin to Fred.

Samuel's Birth Certificate
Samuel married Mary Emma
Bailey on the 6 February, 1897 at New St George's Church, Stalybridge.
This marriage was frowned upon by Samuel's family, apparently they thought
he was marrying beneath himself.
But Mary Emma was pregnant with their first child and perhaps this was the
reason he chose to marry at the risk of becoming somewhat alienated from his
family.

Samuel and Mary Emma's Marriage Certificate
After their marriage they continued to live
in Stalybridge and Samuel was employed first as a Drysalters Carter
and later as a Gas Works Stoker.
It is known that there were financial problems within the family. Mary Emma
liked to drink and would spend what money
they had on alcohol. Samuel's family refused to give them money, aware that
it would be mis-spent, but eventually did help
out in other ways such as providing food and other goods.
When Samuel and Mary Emma's son married, she pawned their wedding gifts
whilst they were at work and then spent the
money on drink.
Samuel and Mary Emma had five children:
Jessie 1897-1965
Thomas died in infancy
Emily 1903-1984
Clara 1908-1978
Samuel 1911-1990 (my direct ancestor)
