There is a story passed down through the family about Edward going "mad" one
day in the shop,
supposedly with a meat cleaver.
There appears to be some truth in this as in 1874/75, Edward was admitted to
Prestwich Lunatic Asylum suffering from
brain disease.
He died in the Asylum on the 4th June, 1875.

Edward's Death Certificate
His obituary was in the " Stalybridge
Reporter " dated the 12th June, 1875. It states that the funeral was
attended by about
fifty butchers from Stalybridge and the surrounding area and that the senior
members of the
" Knights of the Cleaver " walked ahead of the procession.
They also collected the sum of £18 and
supplemented this with £5 from the funds of their association. The money was
handed
to Sarah and it was gratefully received.
Apparently, unknown to everyone present, the family had been in very poor
circumstances for sometime since
Edward's demise.
Edward was buried on the 9th June, 1875 at Old Chapel Dukinfield in the same
grave as his parents and
younger sister Mary Hannah.
After Edward's death, Sarah raised her family alone, she did not remarry.
They continued to live at 5 Shepley Street until the death of her
father-in-law George in 1885 when she moved into the house at
6 Chapel Street. Perhaps this was on consideration that she would care for
her sister-in-law, Mary Hannah,
who had a disability.
At some point Sarah moved again to 112
Stamford Street, Stalybridge.
This is where she died on the 22nd October 1912, she was buried at St
Paul's, Stalybridge on the 25th October, 1912.
