As a child he attended Castle Hall Primary School and on leaving he became a labourer.

Witnesses at their marriage were Jim Burgess and Mona Cox.

Sam and Margaret's Wedding in 1936

During WW2, Sam served in Egypt as a Gunner in the Royal Artillery. Like many men in such circumstances,
Sam returned home from the war scarred both physically and emotionally.

His body was covered in terrible carbuncles which took a long time to heal and he rarely, if ever, spoke
of what he had experienced.

Baby Boy
of Sam and Margaret was stillborn on the 25th August, 1948.
Although he was not named on the certificate, probably because there was no provision made for this, he was known as Ian.

He was interred at St Paul's Church, Stalybridge on the 26th August, 1948 after lying overnight at Sam and Margaret's
home at 97 Grasscroft Street, Stalybridge.

Because there are no charges for grave diggers etc on the burial invoice, it is presumed that he was buried with
person/s unknown as was the usual procedure in those days.

Cause of death was strangulation by the umbilical cord.
