7 weeks

Paint, CorelDraw, Word

TEACHING OBJECTIVES

What do I want the pupils to understand:

  • How and why graphics are used
  • Understand the principles of graphic design
  • What constitutes a good graphic
  • How to apply colour and styles to graphics
  • How to use fonts and text styles
  • The differences between a bitmap or a vector package

What do I want the pupils to be able to do:

  • Create graphics using appropriate software.
  • Open, locate and save work
  • Select and apply different graphic styles
  • Print a graphic
  • Add colour to a graphic
  • Add fonts and text to a graphic
  • Select and delete an item
  • Cut, copy and paste a selected item

DIFFERENTIATION

MUST

SHOULD

COULD

To use ICT to generate, develop, organise and present ideas. Pupils will have worked independently to create a useable graphic. They will have generated a number of possible designs and made informed decisions about selecting colours, editing text etc.

To use ICT to present information in different forms and show awareness of the intended audience. The work will be more goal-directed than at lower levels, providing evidence that classroom discussion of design and communication with graphics has been taken on board to create effective designs for the given purpose.

To use ICT to structure, refine and present information in different forms and styles for specific purposes and audiences. Students must undertake extension activities to demonstrate that they can work to different requirements, varying their work to meet different purposes and audiences.

LESSON

1

Introduce the idea of communication using graphics. Discuss why and how graphics are used. Use the samples on page 1 of the help sheet as illustrations. Go through Page 1 - 3 of the help sheet, students make notes in exercise books. You must explain the difference between bmp and jpeg – students must change file type to jpeg when saving. Start 1.What you have to do.

HW- Collect at least 5 samples of graphic logos with colour and stick in exercise book. Explain the purpose and audience for each one. Leave 5 blank lines between each.

2

Review any techniques that need reinforcing (such as loading). Address any problems that have arisen during the previous lesson. Finish 1.What you have to do. Go through page 4 and 5 up to 3.What you have to do. Explain that for each task they will have to print their work and stick it in their exercise books. Remind students of the importance of printing their work only once (stop wasting paper).

HW – Paint Functions

3

Review the importance of file name and printing. Review tools used and what their purpose is. Look at the graphic samples that pupils collected for homework making particular reference to colour. Explore how colour is used to add information and impact. Students to add a few lines about the colour in each logo. Students to start 3.What you have to do.

HW – Find a pencil sharpener, cassette or CD box – draw your chosen object in pencil in the your exercise book. (Bring object to the next lesson)

4

Review the use of colour in graphics. Go through page 5, 6, part of 7. Students make notes. Students finish 3.What you have to do

HW – Students to collect and stick into exercise book 5 graphics that also include text. Leave 4 lines between each graphic.

5

Go through page 7 and 8, students to make notes. Discuss text sizes and styles with students looking at samples they collected for homework. Explain what a font is, and how fonts are identified by name and size. Students to start 4.What you have to do (Students may be at different stages, students who are behind must continue with earlier units to catch up and pupils who are confident can also attempt further activities)

HW – Students to make notes about each of the graphics they collected last week.

6

Go through pages 9 and 10. Explain the two type of packages and which type the students have been using. Make sure students understand the difference between bitmap and vector packages. Students make notes. Students should have completed a section of the fabric design and printed them out.

HW – Pupils should write a short evaluation about at least one of the designs they have created. (If this is not completed they can choose a previous graphic)

7

Students to continue with tasks.

HW – Students continue with tasks

8

Students to be given second unit task sheet and Planning and preparation sheet. You will need to explain what students are expected to work through it independently and that it will be used to assess their level of achievement. You may want to explain the levels that you have to the students.

HW – Students continue with tasks

9

Review the task and discuss any problems that are raised. Students to finish the task and go onto extension work.

HW – Students continue with tasks

10

The majority of students should be working through the lesson without help to complete the task. Pupils who are finding hard should be given assistance. Any more students finishing early should be given the extension sheets.

HW – Students continue with tasks

11

Students to finish work. Before the end of the lesson give out the appropriate evaluation sheet and discuss after completion. Emphasis that the evaluation is an important part of the assessment of the unit and must not be rushed.

HW – Complete evaluation for homework

12

Allow students to complete and hand in work missed during the unit, undertake further support or extension activities. Check that evaluation sheets have been completed.

HW – None
