• Community Service: We would like to encourage our various local chapters to look outside themselves towards people in need. Examples of community service include participating in a walk for a cause, volunteering at a soup kitchen, or visiting a nursing home.

• Community Outreach: We would also like to encourage local chapters to advertise and promote Latin, JCL and the Classics to the community. This could include reading myths at a local grade school, participating in a walk for a cause wearing togas and carrying signs saying that you belong to the JCL, or setting up a JCL display at a library.

• School Newsletter: The chapter newsletter should be designed and created entirely by students. The purpose of a newsletter is to keep current members informed and recruit new ones. For more information on this contest, check out the Newsletter Rules and Judging Criteria or contact the MJCL Publications Editor, Ryan Manning.

• Web Page Contest: Each local chapter is encouraged to create their own webpage describing their school events in the JCL. This could either be just a homepage or a whole site with different links. It is very important to know that there are new judging criteria to this contest. To learn about the new judging criteria, check out the Website Contest Judging Criteria or contact the MJCL Technical Coordinator, Amanda Luong, for more information.

• Publicity: (Most and Best)-This contest has been newly defined. We want each chapter to publicize Latin, the Classics, or JCL in whatever creative ways possible. This contest includes newspaper or magazine articles, billboards or marquis, lawn signs, stare window. Contact 1st Vice President Sarah Concannon, for more information.

• Tee Shirt: Design a tee shirt that will be the official MassJCL tee to be worn at the National Convention. The date (2003), our chapter (MassJCL) and the theme ("Natura inest in mentibus mostris insatiabilis quaedam cupiditas veri videndi"> must appear on the front of the tee. Please send all entries to Ms. Keeley, Co-Chair, by Nov.18.

• Scrapbook: Creating a good scrapbook is an activity that should be ongoing all year long. Start collecting items now! Anytime your club does any activity, your members should save memorabilia and take photos that can go into the scrapbook. Your scrapbook will receive 5 Scrapbook Contest points if you send in a photo about your club and another 5 points if you send in memorabilia about your club. Contact Historian Devika Gireeshfor submission of scrapbook materials.

• Certamen: The top three teams of the Novice, Lower, Upper Levels will have been determined at the Certamen Preliminaries in March. The three teams of each level will compete during the state convention to determine the winners.

• Oral Academics: Oral Academics is a contest among the top scorers on the Latin Grammar and Language test. The top 6 scorers at each level are eligible to be in the oral academics. No certamen finalists are eligible. No more than one student per school is eligible. If there are fewer than 3 candidates in any level, that level may be eliminated from the Oral Academics Contest.

• Chariot Race: There will be two chariot races: four girls pulling one boy, and four boys pulling one girl. The charioteer (person being pulled) must wear a protective helmet. All chariots must have side panels and one front panel with a height at least 2.5 feet. Runners must be lined up behind the starting line. The first runner to cross the line wins.

• Catapult Contest: The winners of these contests have already been chosen at the 2002 Catapult Contest.

• Toga Parade: There will be a toga parade. Schools are encouraged to show their spirit by bringing banners, musical instruments, etc. or just loud voices! 2nd VP Alexandra Saridis will judge this contest. Prizes will be awarded for the best spirit. If there are any questions, contact Alex

• Toga Parade Pledge Contest: Three years ago the MJCL initiated a new tradition mirroring the toga parade of the National Junior Classical League. During the state convention after the morning's activities, there will be a Toga Parade. In this parade, each delegate will be dressed up in any costume resembling any person/hero/deity of Classical times.

The Toga Parade will also serve as a pledge walk. The purpose of the walk is to raise money for scholarships to the National JCL convention. The MJCL normally offers a scholarship to this convention for one student. Because the national convention is such a valuable experience, we would like to enable more students to go. Therefore we are asking each participant in the state convention to collect donations for the walk. The donations for the walk may be as small as a quarter. If anyone chooses to donate a larger amount and would like to write their own check, please have them make the check out to the Massachusetts Junior Classical League. Teachers are asked to collect cash and either turn it into one check or bring the entire amount, cash and/or checks, with them to the state convention.

Please make copies of the enclosed pledge sheet for students to use to show to people from whom they receive pledges. The school that raises the most money will receive a spirit prize.
