A League of Her Own
Most commonly, female characters in anime play second fiddle to their male counterparts--but sometimes, the lead character is a girl (or, a girl deserves to be the lead character...)
In any case, these Leading Ladies are in a class by themselves, especially when compared to some of the wilting violets that that are so common in run-of-the-mill anime. Nooooooo, THESE gals are not one dimensional characters who do nothing in the story. Their strength of character is what keeps the story going; they are definitely in a league of their own...
Somewhat standard disclaimer: None of these images belong to me, nor do they belong to the sites/webmasters I stole them from =). These images are owned solely by the creators, artists and/or producers of the anime/manga in question. However, if I took the image from your site and you don't want to share it, please tell me about it and I'll take it down. Sometimes, I have to crop/resize or otherwise alter a perfectly good image in order to emphasize the characters--if you don't like it, email me an alternative, please!
Aino Minako from the series Sailormoon/R/S/SS/Stars
Aku no Senshi says: I was curious, not finding Minako in the Leading Ladies, but in the Annoying section. Why? Just because she said a couple of crazy things? I guess if you like normal people, you wouldn't like Minako. But here are the good things about.
1. Her dedication. She was the first senshi to arrive, forfeiting her dreams so she can protect the princess. Her alter ego, Sailor V, was Usagi's idol.
2.She has the best of both worlds: She's funny, crazy, and laid back, but can be very serious at times.
3. She's the leader of the Sailor Senshi. In the manga, she's more mature. In the anime, it's vague... but she's obviously the leader in the beginning of Sailor Stars, and the R movie, and many other pivotal parts of the series.
4. She's beautiful. The deep blue eyes can portray anything, from sorrow to happiness. She has a great body.
5. She can fight! She has extreme agility, and has the most versatile powers of all the senshi, excluding Saturn, Moon, and Pluto.
6. She's somewhat of an underdog, with her painful past in love.
7. She tries to help her friends. She doesn't tell them her problems, to spare them the burden, and she's always there.
8. She's FUNNY!!
9. She's talented. She can act, she can play sports, and she can... be funny ^_^
10. how many times has she died to protect the world? Huh?
Kanzaki Hitomi from the series Escaflowne
Andrael says: You'd be hard-pressed to find a 15-year-old schoolgirl with more talents. She's the star of her school's Girl's Track Team she can run 100 meters in 13 seconds, and her Long Jump record is 6 meters! Along with that, she can read tarot cards with unerring skill, search out hidden things by swinging her pendant, and see the future in Millenium-like psychic visions!
Admittedly, she did get all lovestruck over Allen just because he looks like her crush. But unlike most anime girls, she didn't let it cloud her judgement (much). And whenever Van was in trouble, she never hesitated to drop everything and rush to his rescue.
Hirugashi Kagome from the manga Inu-Yasha
Andrael says: Most of Takahashi-sensei's main characters are driven by love, obsession, and/or bitchiness, and are generally lacking in good sense. Kagome, however, is a definite exception. She actually (gasp) uses her brain on a regular basis! Not only is she good at school, (time-travelling and adventuring on a regular basis and still maintaining a Top 30 standing in a Japanese high school is no mean feat) but she is clever and resourceful in a sticky situation (i.e. being attacked by demons, etc.) Her ability to utilize items such as arrows, hairspray, body parts, and articles of clothing border on the MacGyver-ish.
Andrael donated the picture here too!
Hsien-Ko from the series Darkstalkers
Kurefu-san says: Hsien-ko is from Darkstalkers (Night Warriors, whatever...), and she is one of the coolest characters I've seen. First, I just like the kuang-shi thing, and second, she's one of the few female anime characters I've seen who has her head screwed on straight, so to speak. She's not a bubblehead or a klutz or a total weirdo, and she knows when things are serious. Okay, so everyone in Darkstalkers takes everything too bloody seriously--her sister Mei-ling sounds like the Silver Surfer most of the time with all that heavy philosophical pondering she does, but Hsien-ko's a little more down to earth and plainspoken. In the land of Verbose, it's a nice change. Plus, she's got 'tude. 'Tude is good.
Tenjou Utena from the series Shoujo Kakumei Utena
Animeniac says: She's the strawberry-maned babe from Shoujo Kakumei Utena that has a flair for guys (and gals probably, because of that tomboyish attitude of hers...) and duels (..and has two hot bishonen to boot...) |
