The Dominican Republic's stamp shown here honoured
the American athlete Bob Mathias. He twice won the Olympic gold
medal for the decathlon. In 1947 he won his first victories - the
schoolboy 110-metres hurdles, the discus and the high jump. In 1948 at
the London Olympics he won a gold medal. He then began serious training
for the Helsinki Games and once more carried off the gold.
