Alfred Hajos -the first
Olympic swimmer
The holder of the first Olympic swimming gold medal was the then 18-years-old
Hungarian., Alfred Hajos. But Hajos was famous not only as a great
swimmer. He was the chief trainer of the national football team,
director of the first Hungarian sports paper and the designer of a
number of original architectural projects. As a matter of additional
interest, Hajos won the silver medal for his sports stadium project in
the Olympic Arts Concourse in Paris in 1924. In 1980 Hungary released a
single-sided postcard with an original stamp and a special postmark
dedicated to Alfred Hajos. Both of these postal souvenirs tell of the
"golden tale" of 1896.
