Fencing Hero of Cuba

The souvenir sheet shown here was released by the Republic of Cuba to honour Ramon Fonst, holder of five Olympic fencing awards. The name of this remarkable sportsman who for 45 years took part in major events and competitions in fencing, pistol shooting, boxing and cycling is held in just as much honour in Cuba as, shall we say, the great chess-player Jose-Raoul Capablanca. He is still vivid in minds of people of Cuba. He can still fire the strength and spirit of generations to come.
