What the box says:

Trying to get a spare part for their daddy's rocket ship, two kids stumble upon an ATTACK FROM SPACE when they're captured by Space Fascists from the Sapphire Galaxy! Calling themselves Superians, the aliens force the kiddies' dad to build them a giant spaceship which flies to a space station that is also the Superian Supreme Headquarters. Fortunately, the concerned creatures of the Emerald Planet send Starman to save the universe! Complete with corny costume, super strength, and the ability to fly from planet to planet like a human guided missile, Starman clobbers the bad guys with a frenzied fighting style that looks like a cross between martial arts and a berserk ballet! Wow.

Plot:

Credits roll

On the Emerald Planet, we learn from their High Council they are peaceful until provoked. A variety of hokey aliens are present. It looks more like interpretive dance with funny costumes and a narrator. The evil Superians are going to attack Earth. But, the High Council has a plan. Emerald Planet scientists have created a globe meter which looks like a watch. It has 3 powers: fly through space, detect radiation, and speak and understand any language on Earth. Council will give the globe meter to the Emerald man known as "Starman." He flies through space with the greatest of ease. I have already lost track of how many space shots are superimposed with Starman flying.

Starman detects a Superian warship. It has the typical space station ring design. The stoic looking Starman has to attack the ship to save Earth. Keeps flying on and has more superimposed action. He manages to bend an antenna. The gauges in the space station are all in English. I don't care that they call it a warship then it becomes a space station. Superians are being tossed around like in the original Star Trek damage to the ship trick. Everyone goes to the right and the camera goes to the left. Starman avoids the fiery meteorites but has to retreat. In space, the open flame exists. Well, it is perfectly logical; Starman flies through space without an oxygen mask. The only source of oxygen must be in space. Lands on Earth to find the traitor who sold Earth out to the Superians.

At a Japanese observatory, the astronomers learn that the telescope lens broke. On the secret island where a spaceship is being built for peaceful purposes. They keep mentioning it is for peaceful reasons... Scientist-Daddy (I decided not to mangle the names if possible) is telling his daughter Kyoro(that sounds right) and his son Itchy(actually like Reoichi) about the news. These kids are really level-headed. Sci-daddy and other scientists have to go to the lab where they're building the spaceship. Apparently, a crucial part has broken. The scientists never thought to get a spare and are afraid that enemies will steal the ship. The crucial part is a burnt-out solenoid. Kyoro and Itchy volunteer to go the city to get the part instead of any scientists. Who would suspect a teenage girl and her little brother of buying spaceship parts?

The kids go in for parts. But, the parts were sold to the man right ahead of them. The kids think that is awfully suspicious and follow the guy. Getting a taxi to trail the guy. The man is at the cemetery to place some flowers on a memorial. The kids are hidden and watching everything. The man hits a button the memorial opens to reveal a set of stairs and goes into the hidden complex. Kyoro and Itchy go to the grave, not seeing how it was activated. Rather than fool around with it, these level headed kids decide to tell the police. Suddenly, they are surrounded by armed men. They go into the secret hideout. These evil guys are going to have the kids write a letter to Scientist-Daddy. Did I mention the hideout has a lot of heavily-armed military people as well? So these are the Superians.

Scientist-Daddy's kids still haven't gotten back yet. Now a gangster guy shows up with a letter for Scientist-Daddy. It turns out one of the scientists on the project is working for the Superians who are planning to attack Earth. They are going to force Scientist-Daddy to build the engine for the Superian space craft.

Diplomats learn the plans for their ship for "peaceful purposes" was stolen. Starman wants to talk to them. They let him in to discuss the problem. He is wearing a business suit and warns them of the Superians. And not one of these diplomats questions Starman's sanity about anything him being an alien, etc... Starman runs behind a screen and is in his costume. He flies out a window.

In the hidden Superian base, the Superian commander is angry that Scientist-Daddy isn't working on the space craft. Then, he decides to use the thought eradicator to turn Sci-Daddy and his kids into obedient slaves. They detect that Starman is coming flying through space.

Starman decides to go after the Superian space station he fought earlier. He opens the outer hatch which leads directly into the command room. Should the outer hatch door lead directly to the command room? It doesn't seem like that good of an idea. But, if you can breathe in space, maybe it isn't that dangerous. Starman starts attacking everyone. He breaks an antenna which I think was the one he bent before and, the space station explodes.

At the Earth Superian base, the space craft is being readied by the crew. They are readying for launch. Sci-Daddy and his kids are onboard, too. Starman detects the Superian Supreme Headquarters which is a space station. And this station looks suspiciously like the other space station so much they could be twins... Superians are doing an open hand salute that looks suspiciously like a German salute from World War II. The Superian leader orders the space craft to go through the fiery Death Star. Starman will follow them and the heat will kill him. He detects the space craft has launched from Earth.

Let’s talk about the Death Star. I can only hope that George Lucas wasn't inspired to steal the name from here. It is comprised of rugged mountains and fire. I didn't know the mountains were on stars. As a toy rocket flies over the Death Star, we see everyone in the space craft sweating. Starman has a steel body. He has to stop the ship from arriving at Supreme HQ.

Superian commander aboard the space craft proclaims it to be invincible. Sci-Daddy tells them he doesn't want to help them. Superian laughs and calls him a robot. Funny, Sci-Daddy doesn't sound very subservient. They pick Starman up on the screen, now try to outrun or out fly him. Superian gets Sci-Daddy to launch rockets at Starman. Rockets miss or don't do any damage to him. Then, Starman crashes into the Death Star? Superians laugh at this. They get orders where to land on HQ. Watching the space craft land on the station then looks different as the Superians are present. Could that have been done with miniatures?

All of the Superians are at attention. Going to use Sci-Daddy to build ships to conquer the universe. I'm not sure if they want to destroy or conquer Earth. They've said both things. Kyoro realizes that the thought eradicator has worn off. The Superian leader will destroy Earth unless they surrender. Missiles to destroy a Himalayan mountain will demonstrate their weaponry and be a show of force.

The diplomats meet. They want another engine built for their space craft. Superians are angry the Sci-Daddy hasn't finished designing the ships. Earth rejects the Superian terms, resume spaceship construction, and have captured most of the Superian agents on Earth. The Superians decide to destroy New York City, London, and the Diet building in Tokyo. Missiles launched. See models of famous buildings destroyed. The kids and the other scientist plan to prevent the Superians from attacking Earth anymore and escape, too. They manage to knock out a couple of guards. Now, instead of wearing the shiny aluminum foil suits like before they have the snazzy military uniforms. The scientist goes to warm up the engine of the spacecraft. Itchy goes after Sci-Daddy. Kyoro bluffs her way into missile control and gets in, too. No Superians question her. She starts to sabotage the controls.

The Superians are going to have Sci-Daddy to build a spacecraft to destroy Earth's spacecraft. Superians finalize realize Sci-Daddy isn't their slave anymore. The ray has worn off, and instead of using it on him again. Going to resume the attack on Earth but can't resume. They learn the missile control room was sabotaged. Alarms sound, and the Superians are at attention. They haven’t found Kyoro and the scientist. But, they have Sci-Daddy and Itchy. Superians inspect the ranks to see if they are present. Superians are going to search the spacecraft. Kyoro is guarding it and overpowered. Well, they've been captured and are sentenced to the firing squad.

Finally, Starman shows up to save them. He manages to untie them. The Superians recapture Kyoro and take her off. Starman fighting all the Superians. Imagine fighting with little to no physical contact. Than you have an idea of what is going on at this point. Sci-Daddy and Itchy make it to the ship. Starman grabs a couple of Superian laser cap pistols. (Never called laser pistols, but they leave smoke trails.) Starman mows down some Superians until running out of ammo. He resumes fighting them. Then, he gets a hold of some more guns. He's doing a better job than Adam West as Batman would have done.

Starman keeps getting a hold of guns and shooting more bad guys. He also likes to stand still flexing his muscles and laugh as the Superians shoot him. It doesn't have any effect at all. Starman shoots some more Superians. Then, he twirls the gun around his finger.

Superian leader has Kyoro. He’s going to kill her if Sci-Daddy does escape. Starman keeps wailing on these Superians. Kyoro manages to get a gun and escape. She also manages to cap a few Superians but is trapped in a room.

Starman is still fighting. Starman is in the missile room. He pushes a guy into a missile tube and then loads a missile and closes the chamber. By the way, Kyoro is still trying to shoot Superians. After Starman gets some more guns, he manages to get to the leader's office. Overpowering the leader, he takes care of the Superians that have trapped Kyoro in the room.

The spacecraft flies off. Starman holds Kyoro flying after the ship. Kyoro doesn't have any oxygen supply. So, in space, everyone could hear you scream. They land on the ship and walk into the ship. Touching reunion. Starman wants Sci-Daddy to destroy the HQ. The ship turns around and crashes through the HQ which alters its orbit. It is now safe to destroy the station's nuclear pile. Ship is traveling at more than Mach 100. The HQ is destroyed. Starman flies off into space as the ship heads to Earth.

What I say:

Ah, the Japanese kiddie sci-fi show. It is surprisingly good. The kids are not annoying. They don't get into trouble and cry to be saved. Because, Starman takes his time to get anywhere. I would get to wondering where Starman was. It is almost on the level of when Santo will show up in Samson in the Wax Museum. The effects, I ragged on to some degree. But considering how old it is, they work pretty well. If only they'd drop the superimposed flying.
