What the box says:

No box to say a single thing. When children hear about how Marvel movies suck, they can't believe it with Blade, Blade 2, X-Men, Spiderman, Daredevil, and the several more that will be released over the next few months. But, what about the Punisher with Dolph Lungren? How about the much reviled Captain America with the Italian Red Skull? How bad would a movie be that Marvel didn't want you to see be?

A movie company held the rights to the Fantastic Four. And for them to keep the rights, they had to release a movie. They basically sublet the rights to Roger Corman to make a movie. But, it had to be fully intended to be released theatrically. Trailers, posters, etc... Corman got a film made for a low budget in 30 days. Then, everyone who worked on the film learns the movie was just used for the other company to hold onto the rights. And, this movie was vaulted never to be released.

Around this time in the early 1990s, a rumor was circulating how a big budget Christopher Columbus FF movie was going to be made. This was the same time that the James Cameron Spiderman was trying to be completed. But, a few copies of it were circulated at comic conventions, etc... Somebody posted it online, and it's legend can be discussed.

Plot:

As we see the Fantastic Four on the screen, we're treated to some generic triumphant music playing as we travel through the solar system. The credits roll. When the only names that sound familiar are the guy from the "Boy Who Could Fly" or the commandant from the Police Academy movies or also known as the old guy on Punky Brewster, you know quality will ensue.

Physics lecture in college, George Gaynes as the professor is discussing the difficulty of faster-than-light travel or near-light-speed travel. But, with Colossus (not the Russian mutant), near light travel is possible. Colossus is some kind of comet. Colossus will pass through the Van Allen belt and be as close as it will ever come to Earth.

After class, Reed and Victor are discussing the Colossus energy generator. At, the Storm's boarding house, Sue is yelling for Johnny who is playing a video game with Ben. This video game seems to be from a system which might have worse graphics that an Atari 2600.

Sue and Johnny are going to watch Colossus. Reed can't go with them. With or without the semi sweet romantic music playing in the background, we can tell that Sue has a huge crush on Reed. I'm guessing she's 12, Johnny is 9.

Reed and Victor are working in the lab. Reed finds some mistakes in Victor's calculations. But, arrogant Victor doesn't recheck the figures. He's too busy. They prepare to harness the energy of Colossus which vaguely looks like a slow flashing blue strobe light. Reed and Doom start their experiment.

Ben is outside watching Colossus with a lot of others. He sees the building where Reed and Victor are working generating some strange energy beams and runs there thinking something is wrong. This is pretty dead on. Reed warns Victor who ignores him. The machine explodes. Victor is struck by an energy ray from the machine. Ben rushes in tries to save Victor.

In the hospital, the doctor tells Reed that Victor didn't survive due to his severe burns. Reed blames himself for Victor. In the elevator, the doctor talks about saving the heavily bandaged Victor, who is obviously alive.

10 years later, in the Baxter Building, Reed is trying to convince Ben to fly his experimental spacecraft. Ben agrees. But, they need a crew. Reed and Ben go to the Storm's boarding house. Reed isn't happy about Sue and Johnny as the crew. Ben thinks they know more about the project than qualified people. You'd think an experienced pilot wouldn't care about making people happy if lives were endangered. Sue and Johnny would be mad that they couldn't go. Let's see two unqualified people as crew on an experimental spacecraft. Good idea to me. In the comics, Ben didn't want them as the crew. Reed overruled him. A scientist is claiming to have a better idea than a qualified pilot about a mission. End mini-rant. Johnny is ready to go. Reed is about to tell him he doesn't think they should go until he sees Sue coming down the stairs. How can science compete with a hot chick? It simply cannot...

The doctor from the hospital and another guy are working for Doom because they have vaguely European accents. Some armed guards are bringing a diamond to Reed and his crew. Ben wants to know about it. He then accidentally trips the blind sculptress, Alicia Masters. Ben is smitten with her. A creepy jewel thief is hunting for the diamond. Doom's lackeys are waiting.

Reed opens the case to reveal the giant diamond. This diamond looks like a chunk of quartz you can find in rock shops for a couple of hundred dollars. And, he explains how it will be used as some sort of cooling system. Reed still holds himself responsible for the death of Victor. Ben, Sue, and Johnny swear to help. This is just to show that they are a team. Reed activates the security system.

Alicia is molding a sculpture of Ben's face. The creepy jewel guy is watching her. He thinks that the giant diamond will make a good gift to give her. The diamond will let her see how much he loves her.

Jewel guy breaks into Reed's lab easily. He pops out of a vent and hop scotches through the visible laser grid. I just realized this guy has a sort of Penguin from Batman Returns vibe about him. Maybe they could have made some money claiming Tim Burton based the Penguin off of the Jeweler from this movie. The Jeweler switches the real diamond for a fake one. How does he know what it looked like? It wasn't taken out of the case until it was in Reed's lab. I'm not going to believe this guy snuck into the vents to see what it looks like, leaves and gets a fake to switch. Somehow, Doom sees all this happen. I guess Doom is just spying on Reed. Doom is happy that a midget jewel thief switched diamonds, helped Doom so much. Doom had a plan to stop Reed. But, with the Jeweler's inadvertent help, Doom will get to harness the power of Colossus and Reed will die in space.

We get the scene where the newspapers proclaim the upcoming Reed Richard's space mission. We get the typical countdown for a launch and stock footage of a launch. They made it to outer space.

Reed, Sue, and Johnny are doing the random button pushing to control stuff. Reed realizes the diamond is a fake and they try to get the ship away from Colossus. They all are struck by a white light while ooh-ooh-ooh music is playing. It is the kind of thing used to indicate if something profound is happening.

Doom is happy to say the least to hear about the spacecraft exploding, thinking that Reed is dead. Doom then tries to teach the audience how to laugh maniacally.

I am not wearing a minidress or a skirt, perverted fanboy!!!

In a field with fiery wreckage, Ben is looking for the others. I need to mention that the wreckage looks like someone tossed a few pieces of things looking vaguely hi-tech around a field. Ben gets the wreckage off of Reed. Johnny is ecstatic to be alive. Who wouldn't at this point? Reed is wondering why none of them have as much as a scratch on them. Johnny is sneezes fire. They hear Sue but can't see her. Slowly, she starts to reappear. Well, Sue is kind of disturbed that she can't see part of herself and is about to fall backwards. Until, Reed's arm stretches to catch her. It isn't hard to have fire look real, or to make someone turn invisible. But, Reed's stretching looks pretty fake...

At sunset, they are gathered around a fire. Sue wants to know what is happening. Johnny is upset. Reed manages to calm him down. Johnny can't seem to be entirely on fire, yet.... Plot point. Ben is still human and doesn't look like lumpy orange oatmeal.

Doom is unhappy that Reed is still alive. He wants them found. Is it a cliché to say that Dr. Doom in this movie is a typical angry super villain? That was always one of Doom's strengths. He always had class. Pitching a fit makes him not seem as cool.

We get the twirling newspaper proclaiming Reed and his crew is presumed dead. Alicia is sculpting a model of Ben's face. A delivery guy wheels in a package. It turns out the Alicia is going to make a memorial statue for Reed and the rest of them.

In the sewer or a run-down building, the Jeweler talks to his people. I was reminded of the X-Men's Morlocks and Mole Man's followers. He has decided it is time for him to have a queen. Alicia as it would turn out. Well, any woman with eyesight wouldn't want a thing to do with such an ugly troll looking sucker as the Jeweler. As Alicia is feeling the molds of the Statue heads, she realizes the guy that bumped into her earlier was the Ben that died in the crash. The Morlock wannabees sneak around Alicia's apartment. She is surrounded by them and they take her to the Jeweler.

A group of jeeps find Reed. So they must be the military. And they want to debrief Reed and the others. One of them pulls a gun on a large orange skinned monstrosity. Reed convinces them to not shoot Ben. At this point, Ben realizes he looks like lumpy orange oatmeal. It goes without saying. Ben is not a happy camper.

A scientist is going to study Ben. Johnny explains about his generating fires and gives a demonstration.

I never should have played with matches.
The scientist is disturbed by seeing Sue make half of her disappear. By this point, he hands a syringe for Reed to take his own blood.

Doom's castle, the scientist is explaining how Reed and his crew got powers. Doom ponders what would happen if he could receive all their powers. But, he now has a need for the diamond the Jeweler stole.

Doom's lackeys run into the Jeweler's men. They want to talk to the Jeweler.

Johnny wants out of the research facility. Ben wants to stay to hopefully get a cure to turn him human again. They have been told that they are contagious. Ben wants to stay a little longer. They manage to convince Ben to help them escape.

Jeweler refuses to sell the diamond. Doom's lackeys have to take the diamond. But, they are surrounded by a large number of the Jeweler's men packing heat. Jeweler decides to be merciful and let them go. The lackeys contact Doom. He then decides to handle things himself.

Reed and the rest are in room waiting for the next round of medical tests. Reed, Johnny, and Sue are able to sneak out after overpowering the scientists that have come for the tests and using their quarantine scrubs. Reed is checking on a computer for anything he can find. It is in a foreign language that is familiar to Reed. An alarm sounds. Ben leaves from his room.

Reed, Sue, and Johnny find this large machine supposedly is a laser. Doom pops up, not finished with studying them. He wants them to return to their rooms. Ben arrives. It makes no difference to Doom whether they're alive or dead. Doombots swarm the room. Doombots are Doom's creations that are robotic versions of him he uses as troops. These are just guys wearing Doom's robes. Well, Doombots, sound better than Doomguys, start shooting. Ben starts unloading on the D-bots. Johnny is burning a hole through the wall. We have a fight. Ben punches hole through the wall. And, they all manage to escape. Doom returns after they escape. And, I can surmise he wasn't happy...

Meanwhile, Reed is in his lab. Sue tries to talk to him. Reed has a revelation at this point. Sue turns invisible because she's shy. Johnny is quick-tempered or fiery-tempered. Reed is always stretching himself thin working on various things. Ben relies on brute strength. Their DNA has been altered by Colossus.

Sue asks if their changes aren't permanent why Ben is like he is. Ben is upset about being like he is. He thinks of himself as a freak and wants to get away from everything for a while.

Ben walks the streets. People are scared of him. Get a couple of misadventures at this point.

Sue is modeling the Fantastic Four costume she created. Johnny hates it. Strangely, Reed likes it.

Ben is still wandering. He finds a group of guys that aren't scared of him. They want to take him where he can have a home. These guys remind me of the bums from Spawn. None of them are disturbed by large orange rocky skinned guy.

Jeweler has Alicia. Strangely, she hates the place and wants to leave. Give her some cheese to go with that ham. I think Alicia has to be the worst portrayed and acted character. Some guys tell the Jeweler about Ben but neglect the orange rocky skin part. Jeweler meets Ben and almost trips over him being nice.

Doom is about to get the diamond. Sue wants to know who else would harness the energy of Colossus. Da, tovarisch. Reed gets the printout from the computer in Doom's castle and compares it with some notes he has of Victor's notes. Reed realizes Victor is alive.

Doom blows a hole into the Jeweler's lair. The armed men of the Jeweler's could apply for work with the Galactic Empire. Really lousy shots. Well, most are killed by ricochets off of Doom's armor. Doom dusts himself off and demands to see the Jeweler. Finally get to see a Dr. Doom with a little class.

Jeweler has Alicia at gunpoint to keep Doom away. It doesn't seem to bother Doom. Ben shows up and the Jeweler high tails it out of Dodge. Doom has Alicia at ray-gun point. Alicia proclaims her love for Ben who turns human on hearing this. A swarm of Doombots try to shoot Ben who escapes. Outside, Ben reverts to lumpy oatmeal form.

Doom contacts Reed, tells them about his having the diamond and Alicia. Doom is planning on using a giant laser to destroy New York City. The only way, he won't is if Reed and the others return to his castle to be studied further. They all decide to go and stop Doom.

They use the Fantasti-car to return to Doom's castle. All of them are captured by some sort beam. Finally, Doom reveals how he hates Reed for what has happened to him. Doom is going to use the giant diamond to transfer their powers to himself. Although, each of the Fantastic Four are trapped in some sort of beam that keeps them from escaping, Reed manages to use his stretching power to overturn the diamond and stop the power transfer.

We get the fight where they all use their powers. Ben starts clobbering.

Chris Columbus, it's your turn to get clobbered.
Johnny is starting to flame on. Sue is turning invisible. I never saw if Sue ever used any of her invisible force fields. Doom starts the automatic fire control to start the laser. Johnny finally goes into full Human Torch mode.

I don't care about being politically correct!!! FLAME ON!!!!
Ben goes to rescue Alicia.

Doom is trying to escape. Reed and Doom fight. Doom falls off the castle and as Reed tries to save him. Doom falls off the side of the castle.

Johnny is racing with the laser that will destroy New York City. He gets ahead of it and you have the typical energy beam duel where it goes both ways until the hero's beam, overpowers his opponents.

The movie ends with the wedding of Reed in his Fantastic Four uniform to Sue. They drive off, and end credits roll.

What I say:

I never was a big Fantastic Four fan. I could probably pick enough of this movie apart without having done a research paper on the Fantastic Four. But, that defeats the purpose of Side Order of Ninjas. The point is if the movie is enjoyable. I originally was going to be harsher on this movie until I learned how the rights were kept by making and having this movie shelved. It gave me some sympathy for this movie. No comic book movie could follow the comic book completely. Have to accept the fact that some things are changed. I'm just going to list some of the differences between the comic book and the movie.

In the comics, Doom had a dislike for Reed. They wouldn't have been working on a project together. More that that, after Doom's experiment fails; he is thrown out of college. Afterwards, he wanders the world before he hangs out with some monks that build his armor. Doom didn't become royalty until he overthrew the dictator of his native country of Latveria when he proclaimed himself king. Doctor Doom wouldn't have incompetent lackeys. You either do what Doom wants or you'll be making a permanent dirt angel.

Alicia Masters has played a large role in the Fantastic Four: the blind daughter of the Puppet Master, a super villain who fought the FF on numerous occasions. Besides, Alicia dating Ben Grimm as the Thing for a long time and eventually marries Johnny Storm. But that was an alien shape shifter while the real Alicia Masters was imprisoned.

The Jeweler seems to be lame cross between Mole Man and a typical criminal.

This movie wasn't as bad as I had heard. Granted, I was a recovering comic book nerd who has fallen off the wagon. I could be pretty harsh on it. But, they tried to be fairly close to the continuity and they succeeded at that. I think that it would have been better with different actors. I never thought of Sue as shrinking violet. Johnny has a temper but in the movie he's either hyper mad or hyper happy. Ben Grimm tormented thinking he is a freak that's comic book on the head,

Hmmm, who would be my ideal Fantastic Four?
William Peterson from C.S.I. as Mister Fantastic
Marg Helgenburger from C. S. I. as the Invisible Woman
Michael Madsen from numerous tough guy roles as Ben Grimm and the Thing
Seann William Scott is "Stifler" from as the Human Torch

I'm not a huge C.S.I. . But, every scene with William Peterson studying evidence seems like Reed in his lab. If Reed is going to be a scientist who you can believe with white temples you don't want a little young thing to be a flight Sue. That's where Marg fits in to the FF. She's kind of older but still hot. If not her, Virginia Madsen. Speaking of Madsens. Michael Madsen would be a fairly good choice for Ben Grimm and has a cool enough voice for the Thing, too. Now, for Johnny Storm, I think that Seann William Scott would do a decent job.

With the new Fantastic Four movie coming out next week, it is time for me to desperately throw a little more into this review to make it more hip and with it. How could I pass up the attempt to try to get a few random hits off people searching for reviews of the new FF movie. I did the same thing for Last Samurai.

The Fantastic Four has to be one of the most influential comics of its time. It was one of the first titles by Marvel in the 60s. With the exception of Captain Marvel characters, it was also the first real super powered family. The Justice League had members but not like the FF. Reed adn Sue are married. Johnny is Sue's younger brother. While technically not related to any of the others. he is the gruff and lovable uncle and brother-in-law.

The Fantastic Four had numerous attempts at cartoons over the years. The late 60s had it along with various other Marvel characters. The late 70s had another attempt at the FF. However, the Human Torch was replaced with a cute robot called H.E.R.B.I.E. Apparently, a big fear of kids setting themselves on fire led to his exclusion. They appeared in the "Amazing Spiderman" cartoon form the early 80s. The mid 90s had the last attempt which was more faithful to the comics as the comic book version of the FF seemed to get even more and more addled in strange stroylines (Heroes Reborn?) I think there is supposed to be some new cartoon of the FF popping up after the movie in the next year or so. It gets hard to keep track of those things after a while.

I'm sure the new FF movie will have far better effects than this one. People have already started clamoring about how many things have been ruined by including Doom on the flight that gave the FF their powers. If they wanted to make it more continuity oriented, Doom wouldn't have been brought in as a villain until the sequel. However, Doom is the FF's ultimate villain. Imagine the X-Men not having Magneto to fight. Granted, if they included Mole Man we would have plenty of sweet kaiju monsters for the Thing to show them what time it is. CLOBBERING TIME!!!

One of the things that worries me about the new FF movie is how similar it seems to the Incredibles. Strong character, elastic character, invisibility and force fields, child with incredibly undefined super powers. While they may not have a flame character, a ice character which seems to be the polar opposite of the Human Torch was included. The animation showing the powers was almost sweet enough to casue diabetic comas. While Syndrome doesn't match up perfectly with Dr. Doom, it is a fairly close match.

Most of what I've heard about the movie doesn't have me worried but pretty enthused about seeing it. I do think Jessica Alba shouldn't have gotten the role of Sue Storm. She just isn't old enough. For that matter, the rest of the characters except Ben Grimm should have been aged up some. I menioned earlier who I thought would have made a better FF at least to me. I think most of the my choices were a bit on the other side of the too young actors of the 2005 FF movie.

I probably am being lenient on this movie. However, why shouldn't I be? Many reviews of the Fantastic Four are done by people who aren't particularly interested in oing anything but tearing it a new one. Rubbing your hands together and thinking of snide comments isn't the point of writing reviews. If I wanted to write snide comments about things I didn't like I would criticize all the sports I could think of. It wouldn't be that hard either. I don't do that. I try to leave a lot of my personal thoughts and make my reviews apolitical, too. That happens to be one of the problems with a lot of online reviewers: being overly critical. The other problem is falling over and worshipping t the feet of the movie for being truly excellent when it isn't. (A certain movie news site comes to mind but shall remain nameless.)

The Fantastic Four didn't have high dollar effects or experienced actors. What do you say when the most experienced acter worked with Punky Brewster for years and starred in numerous Police Academy movies? I can't get past the fact that the people made a cheap movie to just keep the rights to make a higher quality movie. The fact alone can almost atone for everything I didn't like in the movie. It seems terrible that these people's efforts were for nothing. Well not quite that bad, the Fantastic Four has almost reached a level of the some of the other infamous bootlegs like Star Wars Holiday Special and the Justice League of America TV pilot. While people won't remember the Man-Thing movie, the Roger Corman Fantastic Four has achieved a success far beyond the failed Chris Columbus FF movie.

If you aren't embarrassed by buying comics or Thing action figures...
