What the box says:

The world is not a friendly place for little Ichiro. Bullies chase him home from school, his parentes are never home and now a pair of bank robbers are after him! So Ichiro escapes by traveling to Monster Island in his imagination. There he cheers on his hero, Godzilla, as the mighty monster battles the evil creatures of the island.

When Ichiro comes face to face with Godzilla's son, Minya, he learns that Godzilla is training Minya to defend himself against the giant beasts who share their home. Minya's spirit and determination inspire Ichiro to face his own enemies in the real world. The bank robbers and the bullies think they're dealing with an ordinary little boy, but they soon discover that Ichiro has the heart and courage of a monster.

Plot:

We get a good Godzilla battling sequence over the credits. He fights monsters and trampling a city, too.

In the dirty industrial area of the city, our intrepid hero, Ichiro and a friend Fujiko are walking to school. Ichiro is mocked by a gang of bullies who run past him making funny noises. This is our first clue Ichiro is a bit weird, he mentions how the cars sound like Minya.

They walk along the road past factories busily releasing smoke into the air. Ichiro sees his dad, who’s a train engineer. He’ll be working late; Ichiro will be alone until Mom gets home. Ichiro and Fujiko head on.

Ichiro’s dad and a coworker take a smoke break. From a newspaper, we learn that bank robbers stole 50 million yen. Let me take a moment to get this into a more accessible number. I’m not going to discuss the exact monetary difference the yen and the dollar. Roughly 100 yen to a US dollar, so, they took somewhere in the neighborhood of $500,000. It’s still not chump change.

Ichiro finds a radio tube and is about to explore a deserted building. The gang of bullies that taunt Ichiro spot him. Fujiko’s mother happens by and tells Ichiro to go home and, she leaves. The bully leader grabs Ichiro’s radio tube. They’ll give it back if he honks a nearby painter’s bike’s horn. Ichiro runs home, mocked again…

In the apartment building where Ichiro and family live, he visits his creepy inventor neighbor. This guy has a peculiar resemblance to Gendou Ikari, Shinji’s father from Evangelion. He’s building a minicomputer for kids. Ichiro mentions how he wants to go to Monster Island where Godzilla, etc…live. Inventor tries to get Ichiro to stand up for himself. Ichiro heads to his family’s apartment.

His mom left him a note to do his schoolwork, etc…Ichiro sees the news about the bank robbery on television. Ichiro takes out a machine from his closest with dials, radio tubes, etc…and plugs it into the outlet. He calls it a computer calling to Monster Island.

Stock footage of a plane taking off assails us. The plane is headed for Monster Island. Suddenly, everyone but Ichiro vanishes, even the controls fly them plane themselves. Ichiro looks like he’s tripping on something…

On Monster Island, he watches Godzilla fighting a swarm of Giant Ants. Not THEM!!!. A few wrestling moves and atomic fire breaths later, Godzilla is triumphant.

Ichiro climbs a tree and watches various monsters. He watches Godzilla fight another monster. A giant ant chases Ichiro who runs away following down a deep cavern. He is trapped and can’t get out until a vine is lowered for him. Minya, Godzilla’s son pulled him up. If I were Godzilla and Minya was my kid I think my wife was getting porked by Barney the purple dinosaur.

Well, Barney's my real dad, but I have to claim that Godzilla is...

Minya and Ichiro talk. Ichiro learns that monster called Gabera is bullying Minya. Minya is too afraid to fight Gabera. Guess what, the head bully taunting Ichiro is named Gabera, too? Gabera is the size of Godzilla. We hear a plane landing. And Ichiro is now on a place called reality.

The phone rings, Ichiro’s mom calls the creepy inventor to check on him, The bank robbers are thought to be in the neighborhood. Inventor awakens Ichiro. Mom won’t be in tonight. Ichiro can’t contact Minya, now.

The next day, Ichiro sees the bullies and runs from them before they spot him. Ichiro heads to a deserted building to explore. He finds some vacuum tubes. He hears something and investigates it. The bullies are heading to the same building but follow the police siren instead. Ichiro finds a pair of headphones. Through a hole in the ceiling, he finds driver license grabbing it before running away from the sound of approaching sirens.

One of the bank robbers lost the license that Ichiro took. Brains orders Not Brawn to follow the kid and retrieve it. Ichiro gets home and uses the new headphones to contact Minya. Not Brawn is nearby but leaves when the cops drive past.

Ichiro and Inventor have dinner. Police stop by talking with Inventor. They think he better lock his car so the robbers don’t steal it.

Brain and Not Brawn plan what to do to retrieve the missing license.

Another Monster Island visit for the headphone wearing Ichiro, he looks for Minya. He spots Gabera. A slow motion chase ensues. Ichiro discovers that Minya doesn’t have any other friends. Ichiro wants to meet Godzilla. Godzilla wants to teach Minya how to fight. Minya is child size but can grow to Godzilla size when he wants to do it.

Godzilla battles a giant lobster. Minya and Ichiro watch from a distance. Godzilla jumps into the ocean to fight the lobster better. He’s pulled underwater as the fight continues. Godzilla defeats the giant lobster and heads for land. Minya and Ichiro follow him..

Godzilla starts fighting a giant spider. He throws a rock on it flipping the spider on its back. Minya tries using his fire breath and can only breathe out a smoke ring. Minya and Ichiro run away. Now it’s the battle of the breath: Godzilla’s fire breath versus the giant spider’s silly string breath. Eventually, Godzilla turns the tide and wins.

Gabera is looking for Minya for a fight. Minya grows to giant size and tries the fire breathing trick again to the same results as before. Minya shrinks and runs away. Gabera leaves.

Jets fly overhead an attack Godzilla who smacks at the jets. He wipes them out and has Minya take another fire breathing lesson. Minya can’t do it until Godzilla steps on his tail. Minya is breathing fire now. Ichiro is watching from a distance when Leaf man grabs him.

Brain and Not Brawn snatched Ichiro. Inventor doesn’t think anything is wrong. Not Brawn is ordered to steal a car. Ichiro starts bawling. Inventor meets with the cops.

Brain is packing the money from the robbery. Not Brawn isn’t back yet with the car. Brain is worried about it. Ichiro is covering a hole in the floor with newspaper. He starts calling for Minya’s help.

On Monster Island, Minya is fighting Gabera. And the pudgy spawn of Godzilla isn’t doing very well. Gabera starts electrocuting Minya. Ichiro is watching the fight; he drops a boulder on Minya’s tail. Fire breath scorches Gabera. Minya is running around, hard for Gabera to grab him. Godzilla arrives and pushes Minya back into the fight.

Gabera is about twice the size of Minya. Godzilla had Gabera quit using the electrocution power against Minya. Ichiro has a plan for Minya. When Gabera stands on the end of a log, Minya jumps on the other end, like a see-saw. It works. Gabera is knocked silly. Godzilla is proud of Minya and promptly kicks Gabera’s cat-reptile hide all over the place. Gabera runs off. Godzilla is about to pick up Minya when Ichiro awakens still tied to the chair.

Not Brawn returns. Ichiro is tied and gagged. The robbers plan to take him with them. Ichiro is taken to the car that won’t start. Ichiro frees himself and runs away. Minya tells Ichiro how Godzilla told him to fight his own battles. Brain grabs him when Ichiro bites his arm like Minya did when fighting Gabera and heads back into the building.

Brain and Not Brawn search for him. Ichiro is hiding he accidentally knocks a drainpipe loose. Not Brawn sees him. The robbers keep looking for him.

Outside, Inventor finds his stolen car and bag of yen. He rushes off to call the police.

Not Brawn is looking for Ichiro. It looks like things aren’t going good for our little hallucinating friend in shorts, when Not Brawn falls through the hole Ichiro covered earlier. Brain checks on Not Brawn, who sprained his ankle. Ichiro runs past them Brain chases afterwards. In slow-motion, Brain chases Ichiro who fell. But, Brain falls, too.

Ichiro starts throwing things at him. Brain draws his knife. Ichiro lets a fire extinguisher spew forth, blinding Brain. Cops arrive find Inventor’s car. Ichiro calls for help and, the cops arrest Brain. Not Brawn tries skulking past but caught, too. Inventor takes Ichiro home.

New smoggy day, Mom vows not to work late. Ichiro tells her to work if they need the money he can handle himself. Heads to school and is stopped by some reporters that interview him. Ichiro mentions that Minya was with him and leaves. Inventor explains that Minya is his role model/imaginary friend.

Ichiro and Fujiko are stopped by the bullies when Ichiro like the Coward of the County fought back. Ichiro defeats Gabera who starts bawling. Ichiro rings the bell on the painter’s bike. This distracts the painter who falls off the ladder dumping a bucket of paint on his head.

Ichiro runs off. The painter chases after him. He tells Dad he did whatever the painter says and runs off. Dad talks with the painter. The former bullies catch up with Ichiro and decide to be friends and head to school.

What I say:

One of the biggest problems with writing reviews is being original. Granted my first few reviews, I wasn’t too considered with that problem then. And it’s easy to see I wasn’t worried. I think the one paragraph describing a movie is good enough evidence of it. But after however many I’ve written, I don’t want to sound like anyone else’s site. One of my big influences would have to be Teleport City . It’s hard to sound different from sites that you’ve read so much. Granted, all the sites I read influence me to some degree. The Teleport City review focuses a lot on it being a movie for children and the joys of childhood. And, that is an interesting view of this movie. But on, to my thoughts.

The message of if you’re pushed around the best solution to your problems is physical violence is a better message than the violence never solves anything. But, that isn’t the message of this movie; it is if captured by bank robbers run around and do Home Alone style shenanigans to your kidnappers to escape them.

How does this not scream Godzilla kiddie movie? The main character is a little hallucinating Ichiro who wants to hang out with Minya, Godzilla’s son only in name. I still think Mrs. Godzilla was seeing a purple dinosaur on the side before Minya was hatched, born, etc…Ichiro, little reality deprived Ichiro. This is some kid whose blood supply is cut by the Japanese micro-shorts. Building a 2 way radio from broken parts and able to ride in a plane that flies itself to Monster Island. Ichiro rotates between grating on you and not grating on you so much. But, having such a psychotic little kid as the hero is still kind of cool.

Well, this is one of the most reviled Godzilla movies. With the stock footage and Ichiro, I can see why others hate it. But, coming in to it without seeing scores of other Godzilla movies, it is silly. But, what is wrong with that? I personally couldn't stand ultra-dark and so-called realistic Godzilla. Who needs realism from a giant green fire-breathing lizard who has the cushy job of thrashing Japan and beating other giant monsters?

Ok, this is pretty much an excuse to use stock footage from Godzilla Versus Sea Monster and Son of Godzilla. Godzilla movies even if they're bad except for the US remake from a few years are normally more entertaining than a lot of movies out there. 2 guys in monster suits fighting each other is. This is just using some stock footage from other movies to pad this one to a decent run time. But, the Godzilla fights are pretty sweet: Godzilla fighting a flock of giant ants, then a lobster, and then a spider. I’m not counting the Gabera fight which had Minya in it. It’s sort of funny when Minya works up to breathe fire looks like he's rubbing both side of his stomach that or exploring his "monsterality" in front of his father. And trying to hug Godzilla all the time.

Godzilla fights can make up for a lot of things. Granted they didn’t the number of miniature tanks and planes, etc that I like in Godzilla movies. I can’t even complain about the stock footage. Haven’t seen those Godzilla movies, yet. What really makes me think so much of Godzilla? A green rubber suited lizard jumping on a model city or fighting another giant costumed creature. This movie had enough Godzilla fights to warm the heart of any Kaiju lovin' fan. A CGI Godzilla isn't true Godzilla.

The parallels between Ichiro and Minya as being bullied shows we all have problems. You could be bullied by someone who could’ve been severely thrashed by a young Urkel. Or you could have be terrorized by a monster almost twice your size that’s a cat-lizard hybrid. This is just a movie about a kid who learns to stand up for himself through his imagination and friendship with another outcast.

I’m trying to psycho-analyze a Godzilla movie. I didn’t with King Kong Versus Godzilla . No this is getting to sound too strange even for me. The Godzilla fights even if seen in other movies are pretty cool. The dubbing is the typical late 60s style. It would be so much better without Ichiro grating on my nerves so much or Minya sounding like a complete moron. It isn't hard to find this movie in the DVD bargain bin at Wal-Mart. So, enjoy the psychotic Ichiro and his wimpy friend Minya.
