What the box says:

A killer has stolen a legendary treasure, magical gold! Now, as the universe spirals into chaos, the gods have awakened to avenge the theft. Noble space pirate Captain Harlock must restore the gold to its rightful heirs before humanity is caught in the crossfire!.

Plot:

The opening credits roll as Harlock’s ship is being attacked by small fighters. And, our space pirate isn’t worried in the least.

A ship is approaching an asteroid city. It is quiet…Too quiet…Sensors show the asteroid has been dead for hours. A small ship approaches them and is allowed to dock. Afterwards, they discover the smaller ship is a bomb. Tochiro and Emeraldas come aboard.

They want to investigate the asteroid. The space patrol captain agrees to dock with the asteroid. The sorceress Meeme is thought to be involved somehow.

Emeraldas and Tochiro fly into the city.

Aboard the space patrol ship, the captain reveals Meeme is the last survivor of the clan that formerly ruled the universe. But, the universe will revert to darkness if the clan returns to power.

Emeraldas and Tochiro land and investigate a strange building. They find a hologram of an organ-playing Meeme. Tochiro asks why she abandoned the ship. She can’t apologize to Harlock, yet. She’s on a planet where the Rhein Gold is about to be stolen by bandits who annihilated the asteroid Aclulion to get the location of the Rhein Gold.

Meeme tells how the gold is guarded by 3 priestesses. If the Gold is taken, the universe will return to darkness. Meeme vanishes. Explosions begin to depressurize the asteroid.

Emeraldas and Tochiro beat feet. The space patrol ship has already left. They take another ship before the asteroid explodes. They trace some musical radiation to the planet Rhein.

They head for the planet Rhein and find Meeme.

Winds buffet Tochiro’s ship. The Rhein Gold was stolen. Harlock’s ship approaches Rhein. Tochiro, Emeraldas, and Meeme leave. Tidal waves destroy Rhein as it falls to darkness.

The bandits are heading to Earth to process the Rhein Gold.

Aboard the Arcadia, Harlock decides to retrieve the gold.

Part 2 begins with Harlock searches for the bandit’s ship. Emeraldas returns to her ship after talking with Meeme.

Harlock is waiting until Meeme wants to tell what she knows about the Rhein Gold. She reveals the bandits arte heading to Earth to forge the gold into a ring. Only one person can forge the gold into the one true ring.

Tadashi Daiba is in his lab when he meets a woman.

The clown-faced bandit has all of the necessary smelting equipment ready.

I'm the Creepy Masked Guy playing today's villain....

Tadashi talks with the woman about his father. Apparently, she knew him. Daiba knew one day he would be called on. He has taken over his father’s work. She wants him to refuse forging a ring from a gold ingot and mentions Harlock before leaving.

Daiba is driving home. The clown-faced-bandit shoots a tire out. Daiba awakens after the crash in his factory. The clown faced bandit wants Daiba to forge a ring. He refuses. But, clown face eventually goads Daiba into forging the ring.

One Ring to rule them. One Ring to find them and in the darkness bind them...

Daiba begins forging the ring as clown face draws his gun. The ring is finished. Clown face begins “the all will bow down to me” drivel before shooting Daiba.

Later, Tochiro arrives finding Daiba wearing a bullet-proof vest. Tochiro will tell Tadashi what is going on if he comes with him. Daiba’s father was a member of Harlock’s crew. Flies to the Arcadia, on the bridge, Harlock welcomes him before the ship leaves the solar system.

Meeme reveals she is a sister of Alberich, head of the Nibelung clan. Alberich is the bandit who stole the Rhein Gold. The ring will possess the power to control the universe. Alberich plans to invade Valhalla, center of the universe where the god Wotan slumbered until awakened by the ring. Nibelung with the ring will wage war against Valhalla. Meeme asks Harlock to stop her brother.

Part 3. Wotan is told of the Rhein Gold stolen and forged into a ring.

On the Arcadia, Meeme is afraid that Wotan is awake. A ship approaches. Harlock readies for battle. As the other ship opens fire, Harlock tries dodging the energy beams. Tochiro while manning the main gun manages to destroy the enemy ship. A smaller ship escapes from the wreckage of the other craft.

They take a sample of the enemy ship and learn it isn’t made by humans.

Wotan is angry that the timelessness of Valhalla is over. He is starting to age.

The Arcadia is in hot pursuit of the other ship that stops at a planet. Harlock thinks this is a trap. On the planet, they scan and find a huge ship. Tochiro is sent to investigate it closer. He flies down a crater beside the ship.

Meeme knows Tochiro will reach the center of the planet. He manages to resume radio contact with Harlock. There is another planet inside of the first one. The inner planet is Wotan’s ship according to Meeme. Meeme and Alberich stole that ship.

Alberich has stolen the Rhein Gold and the ship to show humanity how the Nibelung clan has suffered under Wotan.

Tochiro finds the ship, large bones. The bones are the ship’s power supply. The bones are 650 million years old. Meeme is very well preserved 650 million years old. Nibelung brought up humanity. When Wotan awakes, he’ll destroy humanity first. Meeme wants to help humanity. If Valhalla is destroyed, the universe ends.

The bones begin vibrating. And, the planet begins to movie. Valhalla knows someone is near the planet. Wotan is going to detonate the planet.

Tochiro barely manages to escape the resulting explosion. The Arcadia evades the planet’s remains.

Wotan is informed of the planet. He wants Meeme brought to him to find Alberich.

A tractor beam is pulling the Arcadia. Meeme is in terrible pain.

Part 4 begins as Wotan is having Harlock’s ship towed to Valhalla.

Wotan is having a powerful fortress built to defend Valhalla. The prophetess, Elda, learns that Wotan wants to see Meeme and punish the forger of the ring. The gods need Meeme back on Rhein playing her organ to slow the passage of time. Elda is concerned that no one can control Meeme. Elda warns Wotan about humans. They possess the powers of all the clans. Do not harm the humans Meeme protects.

The Arcadia is still being pulled to the realm of the gods. Tochiro finds the object pulling them towards it, a type of fortress.

Wotan begins to get concerned about Elda’s predictions. Wotan and his wife Fricka inspect the fortress to see why it’s still incomplete. The Meister brothers are the giants constructing the fortress. They want to know when they can have Freya as payment. Wotan claims he hasn’t decided whether to give them Freya or not.

Alberich prepares to invade Valhalla. The only hope for Valhalla is the fortress. The Meister brothers claim just being able to touch Freya once to give them the strength to complete the fortress. They land near Freya playing an organ. Wotan turns away not see what happens next. This is the only way to save the universe.

Alberich is informed of his fleet’s readiness. He isn’t worried about Wotan’s fortress.

Harlock scans the fortress as they pass through the galactic barrier. The Arcadia is battered and bruised. Harlock has Tadashi and Meeme in safety capsules.

The Arcadia is brought down near Freya’s organ. Fricka thinks the ship will be destroyed by the landing. But, the ship survives the crash landing. Harlock and Tochiro search outside. Something grabs Tochiro and can’t contact Harlock.

Wotan and Fricka watch Tochiro.

Alberich’s fleet is heading towards Valhalla.

Tochiro is walking about.

Alberich’s fleet enters warp space.

Harlock has returned to the Arcadia. Meeme awakens and will search for Tochiro. She wants Tadashi to get the Arcadia to a nearby forest.

Tochiro is wandering around in the forest.

Wotan is more worried about Alberich’s fleet than the humans.

Tochiro finds Freya playing an organ.

The Arcadia heads south.

Freya is told what is happening. She and Meeme trained together to play the organ that manipulates time. Meeme approaches as Freya faints.

Wotan is pondering the meaning of time. He learns the humans have found Freya.

Freya reveals the Meister brothers have taken liberties with her. Wotan’s assassin machine attacks Tochiro. But, the approaching Arcadia crushes it.

In space, Alberich’s fleet warps to Valhalla. The attack begins. His fleet is being massacred. He hasn’t used the ring yet.

Freya and Meeme played organs that controlled time. The echoes reverberate through the universe. 100 years on Earth is 1 second in Valhalla.

The space battle continues.

The Nibelung clan attempted to conquer Valhalla but was banished. Alberich couldn’t stand the humiliation. He stole the gold and stopped Freya’s and Meeme’s music. If Valhalla is destroyed by Alberich, the universe would become a speck of light before ending.

Harlock vows to retrieve the gold and return it Rhein.

Finally, Alberich uses the ring.

How are the Borg tied in with Pink Floyd?
Valhalla’s satellites are useless against the fleet. The satellites are quickly destroyed. Wotan needs the fortress to resist the power of the ring.

Harlock launches the Arcadia. It flies near the fortress.

Fricka wants to test the power of the fortress by destroying the Arcadia. Wotan orders the Meister brothers to destroy the ship. They refuse to do it with Freya and Meeme aboard.

The brothers refuse to hurt Freya. Wotan wants the ship destroyed before Alberich arrives.

The fortress contacts the Arcadia. They dock the ship in the fortress.

Wotan wants to know what’s going on.

Alberich’s fleet approaches Valhalla. A space battle ensues. Fighters are destroyed by Alberich’s flagship.

Fasolt, one of the giant brothers, moves the fortress away. The giants have been oppressed by Wotan. They won’t harm Freya and know she can never love them. But, they will defy Wotan. Meeme warns them Alberich will destroy Valhalla unless Wotan gets the fortress. Oh, the universe will be destroyed, too.

Harlock calls Wotan who demands to talk with the Meister brothers. Harlock chews Wotan out. That’s the Captain Kirk in him. Harlock will retrieve the ring to defend everyone in the universe.

Alberich approaches Valhalla. Meeme asks him to give up the ring. He wants to regain the honor of his clan. Alberich wants to rule the universe.

Tochiro opens fire on Alberich’s ship. No effect. Alberich decides to use the ring.

Meister brothers activate the fortress. Some type of anomaly consumes the Arcadia and Alberich’s flagship. The ring is trapped in the Negative Zone. The fortress is made from part of space creature. It is highly improbable for the Arcadia to be able to escape. Harlock is going after Tochiro and the rest. Tadashi heads to the Arcadia while Harlock heads for Alberich’s ship for the ring.

Harlock finds Alberich won’t surrender the ring. He shoots him and grabs the ring. The Dragon consumes Alberich. Harlock escapes to the Arcadia which is being slowly crushed by the dragon.

The Meister brothers have a plan to free them. Freya is placed in an escape pod and sent to Valhalla.

Fasolt calls Harlock about the plan. They will drain the fluid to save the Arcadia. The brothers escape before the fortress explodes.

The Arcadia leaves Valhalla. Tadashi will melt the ring back into an ingot. The dragon fluid that has been released will create monsters on various planets. The end.

What I say:

You've got opera in my anime? Yes, this is roughly based on Wagner's Ring cycle. And, for a change, we've got a non-Tolkien Ring epic. I have no first-hand experience of Wagner's story. I'm getting my little information about it from the afterword of Stephen R. Donaldson's Real Story. An interesting novella which is the first part of a 5 book Gap series that Donaldson based off of Wagner's opera. What does sci-fi and anime see in basing a story off of an opera that when performed concurrently runs over 12 hours? More than you think...

Captain Harlock has been in anime and manga for more than 30 years. Harlock is a simple space pirate. Well, more than that he is a freedom fighter. After Earth has been conquered, he fought a war to liberate an Earth that didn't want to be freed. From then, he sails space in his ship with his crew. Harlock Saga is hard to fit into the Harlock timeline. In fact, the anime and manga versions are quite different on many important plot points. Harlock Saga has even considered non-canon or an alternate universe.

Leiji Matsumoto may be known more for the Daft Punk videos now than his work on Space Battle Cruiser Yamato AKA Starblazers. Arcadia of My Youth, Galaxy Express 999, Queen Emeraldas, DNA 999. His characters seem to for the most part inhabit the same collective universe. Harlock frequently encounters Emeraldas for instance. Characters you expect to run into each other actually do. This isn't like Marvel Comics where Spider Man can encounter Conan.

Matsumoto seems to love lanky characters. The women see very ethereal with floor length hair. His starships seem to be fusion of the futuristic and antiquated. Space Battle Cruiser Yamato is a World War II battleship that has been converted into a starship. Harlock's Arcadia is a more traditional starship even with part of a pirate ship on the back of it. It is far more believable than the sailing starship from Odin: Photon Space Sailor Starlight.

The scarred and eye-patched Harlock has the aura of the lone gunfighter who is far deadlier than others realize. He may not lug a coffin behind him like Franco Nero. But, Harlock is definitely not a someone to provoke.

From what little research I've done, my research consists of surfing the web. But, it is still research. Tochiro seems to be more gruff and outspoken here than in other Harlock continuity. But, it seems perfectly understandable for him to be as gruff and outspoken as he is in Harlock Saga.

A space battle while Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" plays simply exudes cool. Several of Wagner's pieces are incorporated into the story. With, basing an Japanese anime series off a German opera, it only makes sense to try to incorporate Wagner's music into it to give it a feel closer to the Ring cycle.

There is some CG animation. But most of it is more traditional except for a few shots of the Arcadia. The computer animation I noticed isn’t that good. They didn’t want to have it stand out to be so easily recognizable. CG isn’t art. But, when you’re not sure if its CG or cell animation, that is art.

My biggest complaint is Harlock isn't really in the story much. He pilots his ship. A space pirate would be where most of the action is. Mainly, he is playing catch-up. But, I'm sure the other Harlock stories are better than this. This wouldn't be the best starting place for a new fan. It's being thrown in the deep end of the pool trying to figure out what is going on.

I've reviewed some anime before. But, Ultraman 2 isn't the best example of anime. Harlock Saga is the work of one of the more widely ackowledged minds in anime. That doesn't automatically make it a must see. In fact, from what I've learned, the Harlock series sounds more interesting than this OAV.

Quotable Dialogue

"The entire spacecraft is one big gravity bomb."
"The musical radiation is still coming on."
"You always were a softy with women."
"Another planet inside a planet?"
"I don't like the sound of that organ."
"When you think about it, this is simply another dirty power struggle."
"Are you the great god or whatever that they call Wotan?"

Morals of the Story

Asteroids have fog.
Ghosts play organs.
Trains fly.
Space ships need wooden steering wheels.
Ride of the Valkyries is appropriate for space battles in anime.
