There they are forced to confront Metlar and the Inhumanoids - the most terrifying monsters man ever had to confront. An enemy whose aim is to destroy man and his planet.

When Metlar obtains the ultimate weapon the question to be asked is - can Earth Corps sve our world? When the Mutores, strange new allies, materialize the battle is on...

Plot:

The opening credits as the power 80s cartoon theme songs plays about evil monsters from within. We see various monsters and guys in robot armor that makes Tony Stark original Iron Man suit look stylish…

A reporter is covering a group of scientists transporting a giant dinosaur petrified in amber. Now, this dinosaur is a good several hundred feet tall. Dr. Herc Armstrong, leader of Earth Corp a government agency investigating strange underground occurrences. He’s in his armor and interviewed by the reporter.

Eye Patch Guy, Blackthorn Shore, is drilling down 2 miles. Suddenly, the rigging seems to come apart and explode. There is monster in the crater. And, Eye Patch Guy is pleased by it. Let’s face it; unless your name is Nick Fury or you’re running around Madripoor, an eye patch signifies evil.

In San Francisco, Sandra Shore, benefactor, introduces the Earth Corps: Herc Armstrong Derrick Bright, Auger, and Liquidator. The dinosaur in amber is unveiled. It begins to roar which understandably scares the people who flee as good as in an Irwin Allen disaster movie.

On the supposed Golden Gate Bridge, a giant green monster rampages. The dinosaur like creature is partially free of the amber. The Earth Corps are suiting up in their battle armor. They need to get a tissue sample from the green monster.

The monsters are talking to each other. The green, plant monster is Tendril. The albino dinosaur like one is D-Compose. D-Compose is finally freed. Liquidator manages to rescue Sandra.

A chopper evacuates Sandra. D-Compose is throwing rubble at the choppers. Apparently, the police have laser rifles and missiles that are as totally ineffective as G.I. Joe’s weaponry. Both of the monsters manage to escape.

Later, the Earth Corps is trying to learn more about these monsters. Books from hundred of years ago have references to these monsters. The military doubt Earth Corp’s discoveries. In the tradition of old Justice League comics where each hero would split up to uncover the villain’s plan, they split up and do the same thing.

Liquidator goes to the forest where D-Compose was found. He is surrounded by trees.

At the oil field, Bright is searching the crater that Tendril escaped from. Someone cuts his rope. Bright falls to the bottom.

Herc and Auger are in a sub, trying to find where Tendril went after the attack in the city. Tendril smacks the sub around before crushing it. Herc and Auger barely escape from Tendril and D-Compose. They manage to make it to ground.

Bright is studying the walls when his rope was cut. Blackthorn cut the line and ordered the crater filled, too. Blackthorn wants the plans for the Earth Corps battle suits. Somehow, Bright manages to dig himself from the hole.

The tree creatures blame the humans for freeing D-Compose. They sense the goodness of Liquidator. They explain of the war between the Mutores, Redwoods and Granites, against the Inhumanoids: Tendril, D-Compose, and Metlar. The Mutores eventually won by trapping the Inhumanoids. Metlar is contained by Magnacore. Liquidator vows to help them. The Redwoods manage to disappear into thin forest.

Back at the Earth Corps base, Liquidator explains what the Redwoods told him, when Tendril attacks to give us a climax to get us to watch the next episode.

Next episode, we get the credits and the recap to catch us up so far. Earth Corp manages to drive Tendril away.

Sandra overhears her brother, Blackthorn convincing a senator to cut Earth Corps budget. He has some plan to control Metlar and also orders Sandra captured. She manages to kung fu the lackeys and escape.

Earth Corps suit up stop Metlar. They head down into the tunnels, following the tracks. D-Compose captures and puts Herc in his chest. D-Compose has an open set of ribs that open allowing him to trap his foes in his chest. Now that would be really cool with the figure. The other Earth Corps members use G.I. Joe-issue laser rifles to no avail. Herc manages to escape D-Compose’s chest. Tendril attacks while the Earth Corps retreat.

Earth Corps are surrounded by the Granites, living rock creatures. Close to the surface, D-Compose gives chase to them. The Earth Corp battle suits are damages. Sunlight manages to drive D-Compose away. Tree roots take the Earth Corp to the surface for some Evil Dead style plant lovin’…Just kiddin there.

They ask for the Redwoods to help them fight the Inhumanoids. Humans freed them, humans must recapture them. Earth Corps ask for a bigger budget onl to learn they have been put out of business.

Blackthorn gets the battle suit plans. How evilllll……

Earth Corps try to get back to work. Sandra will fund them if she goes with them. New vehicles are designed for the expedition. They restart to go back underground and discover an ancient fortress, when D-Compose attacks. They manage to knock him down when a flock of skeletal bats attack…

Tendril attacks a Granite fortress. Earth Corps reaches a crystalline geode-like area. 2 of the Earth Corps wade into an acid pool and barely manage to neutralize it with a base. Evil guy spys on them. Earth Corps hear a battle is being fought nearby. Tendril and D-Compose are fighting the Granites.

Earth Corps join the fracas. Tendril regenerates whenever part of him is cut off. Metlar manages to escape Magnacore’s magnetic energy field. It is now Earth Corps versus Metlar. But, they are getting trounced. Metlar grabs Bright, Sandra, and other Earth Corps guy and is going to eat them when the episode ends.

Credits and recap ensues. We get the last 30 seconds or so of the previous episode to learn Metlar can hypnotize people like Bright, Sandra, etc…They somehow escape from Metlar when the rest of the Earth Corps trip him. Tendril and D-Compose help their master up. Metlar starts to throw flaming loogies at Earth Corps.

Inhumanoids discuss the humans when Evil guy, Blackthorn attacks Metlar with an energy beam.

Earth Corps finds the Granites but see Metlar trapped by evil guy. Sandra realizes it her brother, right away. She chews him out. D-Compose attacks her. Earth Corps to the rescue. Tendril disrupts Blackthorn’s magnetic field.

D-Compose scratches Sandra who turns into a giant hag monster and attacks Earth Corps.

Tendril chases Blackthorn, who is the only one who knows how to stop the Inhumanoids.

Earth Corps listen to the Granites discuss what to do. They decide to fight. But, they need Magnacore to trap Metlar. Earth Corps learn need to expose Sandra to sunlight to un-D-Compose her. Fortunately, Herc, the leader, has a plan.

On a Civil War battle site, Tendrils attacks. Elsewhere, Metlar attacks Liquidator and Auger who are now trapped in shell in lava. Bright tries convincing the Redwoods to fight.

Herc and the Granites are on a mission while the Redwoods guard a power plant from Metlar.

Tendril is fought back by the Redwoods. Bright and the Redwoods rout Tendril until he runs away.

Herc and Granites reach D-Compose’s lair, a town he pulled underground. Zombie creatures attack out intrepid heroes, surrounded by these unkillable creatures.

Credits and the recap ensues. Zombie knights rush the Granites and Herc, who quickly defeat them.

Metlar is creating statue warriors, not at 100%. D-Compose is get the energy that Tendril failed to do or else.

The Redwoods are still guarding the plant. D-Compose digs up right in front of them, heads to the plant after defeating the trees. He gets the generator and returns to the Earth. The trees are worried about failing.

Liquidator and Auger escape the bubble in the lava. They find Magnacore. Metlar is waiting and captures them. Blackthorn stops Metlar by using the magnetic field again.

Granites explain to Herc about D-Compose’s lair. Giant Hag Sandra is tossing things at them. She pleads with Herc who falls for the oldest trick in the book and is captured by her. The Granites keep up the rock barrage, managing to expose Sandra to sunlight, turned normal.

The statues are alive. Bright and the guide are hiding as Yankee and Rebel Statues fight each other until the Redwoods interfere.

Back at the center of the Earth, Blackthorn has captured Metlar. Magnacore has split into 2 separate entities. I’m sure there’s a reason, just wasn’t paying attention at the time. Blackthorn knows how to control the Inhumanoids and will free the Earth Corps if they pledge allegiance to him.

Somehow, Magnacore tries to escape but is caught in Blackthorn’s magnetic field. Liquidator and Auger fall to the core and are saved by Magnacore who flies away with them. Metlar captures Blackthorn again when his magnetic field generator is shorted out. D-Compose and Tendril return in time for Blackthorn to vow allegiance to Metlar.

Redwoods and Granites help rebuild Earth Corp’s base. Liquidator and Auger return with Magnacore.

A Russian military base is attacked by the Inhumanoids. Zombie-like creatures attack as do statue zombies. Metlar wants the Russian primal energy.

Credits and recap ensue for a final time.

Earth Corps and their Mutore allies plan what to do. The senator that cut their budget talks with them, bring Blackthorn to them. He tells them the Inhumanoids have cluster missiles that will wreck the planet. Earth Corps will go back underground.

Senator, Blackthorn, and the general listen to Earth Corps progress. An earthquake and explosions crack the Earth’s crust. The missiles will detonate soon. Blackthorn grabs and gun. It was all a trap to catch Earth Corps. He is going to rule what is left of humanity if he disposes of Earth Corps.

Underground, Earth Corps and the Mutores realize it is a trap. They fall down a chasm. Need to get to the core before the missiles explode. Metlar sends his elite statue zombies away and is about to detonate the primal core.

Earth Corps and their allies head on and fall further down. Everyone is ok, though. They are close to Metlar’s base, when a nearby dam is blown allowing hydrofluoric acid to run. They escape into the loving arms of D-Compose.

Tendril begins destroying the bridge Earth Corps is on. Sandra manages to convince D-Compose that Metlar wants him dead. Somehow, this pea-brained, zombie slave creating dinosaur believes her to keep Tendril from completely destroying the bridge.

D-Compose and Tendril fight the statue zombies as Earth Corps head on towards Metlar. Countdown is almost up, only some of the missiles have been destroyed. The remaining missiles are powerful enough to destroy the core. Metlar sends the statues against Earth Corps.

The Earth Corps are in trouble until the statues run out of primal energy.

Metlar is throttling D-Compose and Tendril.

Redwoods trap D-Compose in amber.

The Granites recapture Tendril in another cell.

Metlar is trapped by Magnacore. Blackthorn is there but knocked out by manly scientist Herc.

Later, the senator apologizes. Every member of Earth Corps is trying to get Sandra on a date. Somehow, a sample of Tendril’s tissue is lost. We see a green root starting to grow in the trashcan as the episode ends.

What I say:

Ask anyone who knows about 80s cartoons, you'll be told of Tranformers, G.I. Joe, Real Ghostbusters, etc...Granted, rushing home to watch G.I. Joeafter school was more than just entertainment, it was the American way. With as many episodes it was on for years.

But, what about some of the lesser known cartoons? Ever notice every new cartoon had the obligatory 5-part introduction from Jem and the Holograms (I'm secure enough in my masculinity to admit I watched Jem. But after realizing the plot a chick can get who over she wants if she dresses trampish enough and pretends to be someone besides herself makes me appreciate it even more) to Marshal BraveStarr. This would give you a good idea of what the show was about (to sell toys). The bigger ones would have a 5-parter every so often, Arise Serpentor or Head Masters anyone, anyone?

But, the weekend syndicated cartoons, didn't have so many episodes to air. So instead of the huge number of Transformer episodes that could be shown, we had the smaller cartoons pushing toys like Visionaries, Sectaurs to finally the subject of this review Inhumanoids. I've finally gotten to show I've reviewed finally after an introduction of dropping enough 80s cartoon names to make a true child of the 80s proud.

When your theme song is

Inhumanoids, Inhumanoids!
The Evil that lies within!
Down in the fiery depths of the Earth where the nightmares begin!
Inhumanoids, Inhumanoids!

You almost think this sounds like Lovecraft-lite for kids. That was one of the great things about 80s cartoons, they could get away with things like this. In Dragonball Z, they don't die but as the Lizard alien from Last Starfighter said "Fighting evil in another dimension." The 80s would allow you to have "How do you kill something that's already dead?" in a cartoon for impressionable children. In fact, the opening credits where the Inhumanoids grab a bunch of farmers and Earth Corp toss them around before throwing them into boiling lava.

The description off the back of the DVD box makes it sound that much better than what it is. It sounds so epic. And we've got hour and forty-five minute longcommercial. Not that I'm opposed to it. It comes across a vaguely scientific G.I. Joe battling giant monsters. Inhumanoids has a lot of similarities with Ultraman 2. The group of intrepid scientists battling mysterious giant monsters. Granted, we had no giant martial artist who mightily kung fued the evil monsters....

The monster designs are better than you’d think. Tendril is a plant monster. D-Compose, the albino-zombie-creating-rib-cage-imprisoning dinosaur. Metlar isn’t as impressive as his lackeys. But, any monster that throws flaming loogies, I give mad props, too. We had numerous zombie statues, etc…I’m sure a couple shots of Giant Hag Sandra reminded me of Iron Maiden’s mascot Eddie.

It is a smaller world than you can possibly imagine. If you've watched any G.I. Joe or Transformers episodes you better recognize some voices. The guy that does Cobra Commander is Starscream is the voice of D-Compose and Tendril. The voice of Duke is the voice of Auger and Blackthorne Shore. This is far from a complete list. Use any of these voices an try to connect 80s cartoons together, like Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. 6 Degrees of Starscream.

Now, some movies I review are pretty self-explanatory. But, why was the Inhumanoids chosen? I had heard of the Inhumanoids when they originally came out. I had seen the DVD in a few stores but didn’t think much about paying full price for it. Well, a couple of years ago, I entered and won the Joe Bob Briggs Find the Flick contest. And of all the prizes, this DVD was the best sounding. I still have the envelope it was mailed in. Some of the movies I review have been gathering dust for 2 or 3 years before I get to them. In fact, reviewing has gotten me to at least watching some of the DVDs I've bought.

Inhumanoids isn’t the greatest or even a great 80s cartoon. I thought watching some of the G.I. Joe episodes seemed hoky. But, at least with G.I. Joe, I watched and saw almost all of them. I had never seen Inhumanoids before. I’m sure I’d have fond memories had I watched it as a kid. Starting to want to see Bionic Six again, if that tells you anything. Super Future Family...Bionic Six...

Quotable Dialogue

"I find it very unlikely she'd be seen with you."
"Told you there was weird energy around that thing."
"One should not steal what one does not want."
"Scatter the flesh slugs!"
"How do you kill something that's already dead?"
