What I say:

Let’s have a history lesson, in the early 1990s; one of the biggest comic book pencillers was Todd McFarlane. His run on Amazing Spiderman led to the release of the new adjective-less Spiderman series which due to multiple covers sold millions of copies. A couple of years later, Todd and several others of the industry’s top pencillers founded a new comic book company named Image. The first monthly book was Spawn, a very gritty anti-hero. A big problem with Image was the books were always late. By the time, I quit reading Spawn. McFarlane had quit writing or penciling the book. A few years later, news about the Spawn movie is released. I also heard about the HBO animated series.

I have to mention on the voices. Keith David has the gravelly voice of bad-azz you don’t want to provoke. He seems to get the feeling of pain across through too many flashbacks. I would almost have bet money that Jonathan “Commander Will Ryker” Frakes voiced Wynn. And, I would have lost money on it, had I bet. It sounded just like him to me. None of the other voice I recognized except for Richard Dysart who voiced Cogliostro. I’ve heard the name just don’t know any of his work off the top of my head.

I know it was shown on HBO and wasn’t given an R. They place enough for mature audience notices on the DVD. This makes Heavy Metal seem like Fantasia. It isn’t that over the top. But, the violence and nudity are pretty common throughout season 1. With it being on HBO, they could push the envelope and push they did. I’d almost think this was the roughest animated show excluding some of the Japanese animes out there.

One of the problems with a show dependent on such graphic violence, it becomes so common that it bores the viewers. After the first couple of bums shot, it loses a lot of the impact. How many times have you seen Spawn use his chains to kill someone? Lost track myself. I'm not against a show that's violent. But, it has to be handled carefully or it's just a lot of pointless violence and blood. Look at how Evil Dead 2 isn't considered violent as much as comedic violence, or splatterstick. For people who've seen anime, compare Ghost in the Shell (GITS) versus Ninja:Resurrection (NR). GITS's action scenes are very stylized and John Woo like. NR is more trying to kill someone graphically and seems more brutal.

The medium of comic books can use the the power of imagination more than television. We never expected to see a guy gunned down in such detail to watch the life blood flow from him. For no other reason, to show that would take up most of an issue. And comics 32 page format can't stand for something like that. But, with television, they have to be the imagination for most of the viewers. I mentioned how being on HBO let them push the envelope. The animated series is darker and more violent than the comic book was. There exists a PG-13 version of the various seasons of the show.

This has to be the first true-adaptation of a mainstream comic book character to get at R-rated treatment. The Crow doesn’t count as being mainstream considering it was always independent comic book. I think I have voiced enough displeasure of the adaptation of the Punisher. Most of my problems with it concerned it having no relation to the comic book. I accepted in Spider Man Peter Parker having organic webshooters. Because, it made sense that a high school kid even being a science wiz wouldn't be able to make a super adhesive that scientist with decades of experience was unable to do.

I am a big fan of continuity. I like for it to be true to the original material. From what I remember of reading Spawn in the early 90s, it is pretty close to the comic. When, Todd McFarlane, Spawn’s creator was intimately involved in creation of this series, you’re at least going to get close to what was truly intended. Granted Billy was never a Senator’s illegitimate son. And, Spawn certainly didn’t leave him among the land of the living. I seem to recall a dead ice cream truck driver with multiple ice cream sticks stabbed into the body. The violence in the comic wasn’t ever shown as explicitly as in this series.

The bad news? I got sick and tired of the Spawn flashbacks. Cogliostro just could come out and give Spawn advice sounding like a back-water Yoda. And, none of his advice was useful, either. At least in the live action movie, Cogliostro tries to help train Spawn. Maybe that will be in the 2nd or 3rd seasons. The plot seemed a bit convoluted, but everything tied together in the end. Some plot points, I'm sure will be covered later but it seems to tie a lot of loose ends very fast. If I had watched it over a period of weeks instead of in one session, it wouldn’t have gotten on my nerves as much.
