The Hilton Hotel provided a comfortable and gracious location for the 5th
ABRSM High Scorers’ Concert in Kuching, Sarawak on 12th October
2000.
The young performers
enthralled an audience of proud parents, teachers and dignitaries with their
playing of ABRSM examination pieces from piano, violin, flute and trumpet
syllabuses.
The High Scorers’ event
is sponsored by the Sarawak Music Society whose president is a former ABRSM
scholar. Ms Yeoh Jun Lin commented ‘we
like to provide an opportunity for the children to hear each other and it
raises awareness as well as standards’.
One little fellow seated in
the front row appeared to know all the music being played. This was evident
by his enthusiastic humming and beaming smile of approval during the
performances . When it came to the final performance of the evening,
Debussy’s piano prelude, ‘General Lavine Eccentric’, I thought ‘he
surely will not know this piece’- but to my utter surprise he appeared to
know every note of that too! When I enquired of his mother how her young son
came to know the melodies and themes in all the concert pieces, she replied
‘well, I am a piano teacher and he sits for hours just listening to all
the lessons- he appears to have absorbed it all’. He certainly had!
It was a delightful event
and the Board are indeed grateful to Sarawak Music Society for their
endeavours in organizing it with meticulous care.
All performers received
their ABRSM high scorers’ badges, as well as Sarawak Music Society tee
shirts!
