7th HIGH SCORERS' CONCERT

06.10.2002

On 6th October 2002 at the Grand Ballroom Hilton Kuching, 19 high achievers of the ABRSM practical music examinations - who were randomly selected by the Board - performed their winning pieces during the 7th High Scorer’s Concert 2002.

The concert, attended by an audience of more than 200 people, encompassed performances of various musical instruments. Bill Thompson, the ABRSM Regional Consultant of South East Asia, was unable to attend the concert. The Chairman, Miss Jane Lim, delivered his speech to the performers on his behalf.

The high scorers for 2002 were Tiong Ying (Grade 1– piano), Ginny Tan (Grade 1-violin), Hilda Lau Hui Lin (Grade 2-piano), Benjamin Moh (Grade 3-violin), Megan Tan Khai Khee (Grade 3-piano), Denna Ance (Grade 4-flute), Kueh Wern Lunn (Grade 4-violin), Kimberley Chang Yee Ling (Grade 4-piano), Thian Siaw Yin (Grade 5- E flat Saxophone), Yong Pin Wei (Grade 5-piano), Sarah Anne Kam Ye-Peh (Grade 5-clarinet), Elaine Thian Ching Ching (Grade 5-B flat saxophone), Joanna Ting (Grade 5-violin), Wendy Lim (Grade 5-violin), Melissa Ting Yee (Grade 6-piano), Samantha Law (Grade 6-violin), Grace Phang Li Ern (Grade 7-violin), Soh Ing Ling (Grade 7-piano), Geraldine Tan Ai Ing (Grade 8-piano), Grace Phang Li Ern (Grade 8-piano) and Tan Hui Lin (Grade 8-piano).

Their exceptional results have earned them a chance to perform on stage. This not only celebrates their achievement with their  parents, teachers, and friends; but it also builds confidence, cultivates musicianship within them and creates inspiration to the other young musicians among the audience.

Bill Thompson’s speech:

Dear Performers,

Today is a special event for each and everyone of you. You sere selected to perform at the Kuching ABRSM High Scorer’s Concert because of your very high marks in your recent exam.

Today, no one will be giving marks, and so don’t worry if your fingers make the occasional mistake. Even top concert artists can make small slips.

The important thing to do today is to enjoy your music making and to be able to share your pleasure with your audience most of whom will be proud parents, brothers and sisters, and friends.

I am extremely sorry that I cannot be with you, this year, as I am currently traveling in Indonesia, but you are in my thoughts today.

On behalf of the ABRSM I would like to congratulate all those of you who have been selected to play, today, and at the same time, convey my thanks too, to Sarawak Music Society for arranging this event

All very warmest regards and best wishes for a fabulous concert.

We look forward to the next 8th High Scorer’s Concert!
