11-13 July 2003 We are counting down to the 6th Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), the biggest celebration of world music in Kuching returns and this year promises to be even bigger and better than last year’s. This year, it will be over the 3 days of 11th to 13th of July at the Sarawak Cultural Village, Santubong. The festival first started in 1998 and is the only one of its kind in this region. Today, it has made a name for itself and on its own merits in the international World Music circuit. Sponsored and supported by the Sarawak Tourism Board and the Ministry of Tourism, the Rainforest World Music Festival is now a permanent fixture on a lot of diaries and promising to draw even bigger audiences from all over. Malaysian Airlines MAS is also a major sponsor and supporter of the event. The encompassing atmosphere of fun and excitement where everyone is a friend stands as a tie for first place with the selection of good music. There were emails and messages pouring in after last year with similar sentiments of - “I’m back home now but my heart is still in Sarawak at the festival.” As it is Sarawak Tourism Year, the international bands brought in for the event consist of some very big names in the music circle. The organizers have also stuck to their usual formula of having something for everybody, trying to encompass every continent’s music, and living up to its reputation of being the Best Blast in the region. As usual, there will be nightly Mainstage shows over the 3 days starting at 7.00 pm. There will also be fun interactive workshops, mini concerts and informative sessions by the musicians every afternoon from 2.00 – 5.00 pm. It is also the best time to meet and mingle with colourful personalities that will be converging here for the event. Last year’s event was so well received that a new site has had to be cleared at the Cultural Village to accommodate the growing audience who come from all over the world. Among some of the groups that we are expecting to see are La Volee d’ Castors (Canada), Valeri Dimchev Quartet (Bulgaria), Chipolatas (UK), Huun Huur Tu (Tuvan), Ensemble Kaboul (Afghanistan), Habana Son Club (Cuban), Omar Pene performing Senegalese music, Tarika (Madagascar), Krakatau from Jakarta, Bnet Marrakech from Morocco and many more. Sarawak Music Society has been appointed by the Sarawak Tourism Board to organize spot promotion. On the few days leading up to the Festival, there will be spot promotions at various venues in Kuching City including schools, shopping complexes and popular public places. This will give you a chance to catch a FREE 15-minute live music performance by the different individual groups and also for your chance to win free tickets to the Festival. Starting next week, we will introduce to you in our RWMF promotion series all the musical groups that will be taking part in this year’s event. When the spot promotion programs are finalized, you will have first hand information regarding the time and venue when you can meet the various artists live in Kuching.
